camp WHERE DOES YOUR HEART WANNA BE? // announcement

// I know the meeting is only a few days away, but I feel this deserved its own thread and Howlingstar would not realistically wait to announce this! As I said in the discord, I want to extend my upmost gratitude towards Rai for all the time she spent as a lead warrior in ThunderClan!

Her talk with Sunfreckle had been earlier in the day, giving her time to process the change this will be to her clan, her council. But even despite the disappointment and sadness she feels at the loss of her friend as a lead warrior, she is even more happy for him. Now he does not need to worry about helping to lead this clan, but can do what he really wants to do: spend time with his family and take life one day at a time. This thought brings a smile to her face as she stands atop the Highrock and calls, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Highrock for a clan meeting!"

Her clanmates approach and she looks upon them warmly despite the chill in the air. Her fur is fluffed out against the wind, tail tucked down around a hind leg. As soon as everyone has found their seats, she looks first to Sunfreckle in the crowd nearby and begins, "Sunfreckle has made the decision to step down as a lead warrior of ThunderClan. He realized a lot of things during his time away, and he wishes to spend his time focusing on his family. He served on my council for many moons and I cannot begin to tell you the difference he's made. Sunfreckle, thank you for all you've done." She levels him with a meaningful look, stifling any tears that may threaten to well up in the noble woman's eyes. "I look forward to continuing to work alongside you as a warrior, my friend."

the woman slips quietly from where she’d been pacing near the medicine den. it doesn’t help, but the sun feels feebly brighter in the patch of sunlight outside berryheart’s den, a struggling beam of warmth twining through the thickness of her coat. when howlingstar calls she does not have to go far — doesn’t move much at all until the aged tabby begins to speak. begins to thank sunfreckle for his service, for everything he had done for his clan, and her ears perk from their gloomy half - mast ; the oncoming loom of dusk patrol and the constant ache of prizeless hunting patrols, stress and worry leaving its physical toll. still, she lifts slow and deliberate from the ground, shakes out her thick fur as she makes her way forth.

sunfreckle is easy to find amongst the crowd ; they are similarly shaped, large and bright amidst earthy brown and tabby pelts. the molly doesn’t know if she is surprised or not, but there is something deep in her chest — a coiled ball of worry releasing, easing the wire snare on her lungs and allowing her to breathe easier ( until she returns to that halo of herb - smell and pain. she doesn’t have to, but then again, she does. ). when she steps alone enough, she aims to bump her forehead gently against her father’s shoulder, eyes soft and ringed red, tired when she looks up at him again ; but her smile is still present, dimmed as it was, ” proud of you. “ she says, softly, hoarsely, and she is. howlingstar praises him and she feels her chest swell with pride, a gleam in her eye that even leafbares recent cruelty could not stifle. that was her dad, regardless of the worried pit in her chest. that was her dad.

She had been resting on a small patch of frosty grass near the warriors den. Having spent most of that morning hunting her paw pads were now sore. A familiar voice rose above her head and pushed the molly to her achey paws. Ignoring her condition she knew not to ignore Howlingstar. Heeding the call of her leader the darkly pointed she-cat hastily made way to the clearing. Long tail held high and curiously as she spotted the aging tabby. Once Honeydapple was within appropriate ear shot she settled within the crowd. Ears twitching with intrigue as Howlingstar brought news of Sunfreckle's choice. Surprise lit up the moggy's speckled maw then melted away into a softer look. She could respect anyone willing to admit their truth and family was an important matter. If life grew worrisome and priorities needed to be changed she would always choose Grizzlyjaw. A small smile graced the pale feline as her blue gaze fell on to the warrior's bright pelt. There was still plenty of good a cat could do just as a warrior.

There is respect to be held in Sunfreckle's decision. It could not have been easy, this choice. He himself would have to be dead in order to give up the position he now held within the clan. He had worked hard for it, earned it through blood sweat and tears. But he would never dare hold the decision over someone elses head. That was the beauty of freedom, the power to choose and besides, he understands why this particular choice had been made. It is not as if Sunfreckle is leaving them for good.

He doesn't say much as he surveys first his grandmothers face and then Sunfreckles. He takes note of Freckleflames words, of Honeydapple's soft smile and then he too turns to the ginger furred warrior and he bows his head respectfully. "It was an honor serving alongside you as a fellow lead warrior" he says, his voice soft with no trace of the usual sharp edge it holds.

Unlike the others, Raccoonstripe does not understand Sunfreckle’s choice. He searches the bulky red tabby’s face for a hint, a clue, as to what really might be going on, but he finds nothing. To give up on a council seat is to give up having a direct voice, a say in Howlingstar’s decisions that guide all of ThunderClan. He had worked hard—tirelessly—to scrabble into his own seat on her council. To throw it all away—for what, for a couple of warrior-aged kits who no longer need him? For apprentices who will be busy with their own mentors now? Raccoonstripe is quiet as Freckleflame approaches her father, as Honeydapple and then Burnstorm level ThunderClan's former lead warrior with a look of respect.

“It was an honor serving alongside you,” his kin says to Sunfreckle, and Raccoonstripe stifles a sigh. He supposes the great red tabby will have less on his shoulders now—less responsibility to carry. He will never understand the impulse to abandon one’s post for the comfort of a mate, of kits, but he supposes, begrudgingly, he can respect it. “It was,” he says, dittoing Burnstorm with a smile. “Don’t think you’ll get out of leading hunting patrols anytime soon, though.” His joke fizzles, but he maintains his grin.

He feels himself warm with embarrassment at the light praise, pleased with his decision still and hopeful that his lack of presence would not alter Howlingstar's council in any signficant way, perhaps the lack of his general softness might actually push things along with a little more pressure but he was always there for her should she need a less loud voice's advice and suggestion even if it was not with any sense of officialness.
It takes a lot to not immediately cry at his leader's warm words and kind voice but she takes it in stride and beams back at her with all the cheer and light that his namesake provided. "It was an honor, Howlingstar."

Freckleflame's nudge turns him back to the reason why he had made the decision and he gently bumps his head back against his daughter's with all the enthusiasm of a proud parent congratulating their kit; it was like seeing her apprenticed again and delighted him more than anything. He wondered if one day she might rise up to fill the place his paws once stood, StarClan knew despite her occasional lapses in sense and judgement she had a good heart like both her father's but thankfully his rational thinking. A nod is given to Honeydapple and Burnstorm in turn and he sits there content to his clanmates refreshing understanding. He had briefly been worried about potential backlash, cries of his cowardice, but they were all so kind about it instead.

Raccoonstripe's remark earns him a chuckle, "I'd never expect not to, someone still needs to keep some of you more prickly fellows in line, hm?"

I SEE A SONG OF PAST ROMANCE — Hailstorm heeds the call of Howlingstar and listens closely to her words, he's surprised to hear that Sunfreckle's stepping down from his position as lead warrior but he does not grow judgemental toward his friend knowing that he would be happiest doing what his heart wished. And that was Sunfreckle's wish to spend more time with his family then the apprentice could respect that, he offers a warm smile and nod of his helm in the direction of the red tabby. He can't help but feel some amusement at the tabby's response to Raccoonstripe's remark, he can't help but wonder if he would've stepped down for his own family. Hailstorm would, he'd do just the same as Sunfreckle he thinks.
