WONDER NO MORE ✦ grasspaw

Life had been unkind recently. She knew now that no one walked this earth and did not feel the sting of loss, but it did seem that Midnightpaw and her siblings had suffered more than their fare share. Whitepaw wasn't around much anymore, Nightingalecry was dead and she wasn't sure how she felt about Frightpaw anymore. It was hard not to blame her adoptive sister for their mother's brutal murder. It probably wasn't just, but she couldn't get past the lingering memories of Frightpaw begging the fallen queen not to strike Ebonylight down. If it hadn't been for her intervention....

At least she still had her brother. Grasspaw was always there when things got hard. She had noticed as they grew older that he seemed less keen on having her by his side, but she couldn't bring herself to feel ashamed. He was the only one here that she could trust not to judge her, or to look at her with pity in their eyes. She needed him like a crutch, and as long as he allowed her to stay next to him, she would. Especially with the yellowcough ravaging the clan. Neither of them would survive the outbreak if they became ill, and every day, she watched him like a hawk for any new signs or symptoms. Today she found him outside the apprentice den, a small field mouse clutched in her jaws. She laid it at his paws with an empty look. "Will you eat with me?"

𓆝 . ° ✦ Grasspaw shared her empty expression. His figure showed him to be frail despite his lack of illness. The
stress of recent events certainly took a toll on those with weaker disposition. "Hm?" he roused upon hearing the quiet tone of his sister's voice. "Yeah, sure," The field mouse wasn't unappetizing by any means. He wasn't hungry though. But for Middy's sake, he took a small bite and nudged it back toward her.

As much as Grasspaw would love to say he wanted to be left alone, he couldn't help but admit to himself that he needed her to lean on as well. He, however, didn't know that Frightpaw was the reason for Nightingalecry's untimely demise. He had been distracted, attempting a swipe at another figure in the den. He barely remembers much except the image of Frightpaw curled by their mother's throat, covered in her blood. It haunted him in his dreams. He knew there had been something off about Ebonylight from the beginning. He knew it and he hated himself for not saying anything. But... what would he have even said? "Hey your dad sucks," wasn't really something that'd go over well with Frightpaw. Or Nightingalecry, for that matter.

"Have y'ever thought of if mice have families?" he asked.
