Just two moons ago, Bramblekit had been ecstatic to greet the growth that came with each day. The sun would rise, bringing light with which she could assess her newfound leg strength, her gait steadier and more under her control, her perspective of the world shifting as her height increased. It didn't bring the composure that Heatherkit had in spades, or the intelligence that shone in Nightkit's eyes, but that was okay, wasn't it? The tabby hadn't been named for her appearance or kindness; she had been named for her strong, protective nature. Her growth enabled that nature and maybe, in turn, that would win her some praise.

Her growth and ambition were outstripping her capacity, though the child didn't know that was the cause of her problems. All Bramblekit knew was that she ached, a pain that originated in her knees and splintered along her bones. She felt taller by the day, a bean shoot careening toward the sky, but with it came pain, a strangler vine constricting its host tree. It distracted her - truthfully, it bothered her, but everyone always seemed so busy with the perpetual turmoil of clan life that her tiny problem was hardly worth burdening someone else with. She could deal with it herself, couldn't she? It would be helpful!

A sudden shooting ache stopped her in her tracks, the fragile auburn leaf she'd been hunting darting away, and when it subsided she redirected herself to the medicine cat's den. Golden sight cast left and right before she scurried into the maw of the tunnel, dark fur set against rich brown dirt. Satisfaction rushed over her in a wave - this is what it's like to walk in a tunnel, this is what the inside of the medicine cat's den looks like, this is what herbs look like - but when it receded, her sore joints remained. Staying low to the ground, Bramblekit began to sniff through the different herbs in search of something to help her. Would a herb smell like it could help her? She assumed so. How else could the medicine cats remember which ones they needed?
