private WRITE MELODIES [✨] Howlfire

The loss of a mother was the loss of a piece of you. The day Figfeather learned Daisyflight died had been the day everything changed, the day she had to grow up.

Figfeather would not say she knew Howlfire’s pain to a T, but she understands it. When she looks at the queen she sees the silent pain in her eyes and Figfeather recalls how much her heart had ached knowing you’d never see or get to even bury your mother. To not be able to say goodbye was the hardest part.

The marmalade tabby can’t stand around and watch her friend hurt alone. So she had asked Butterflytuft to watch over Howlfire’s kits, if she could convince the queen to journey out of camp with her. Padding into the den she looks at Howlfire.

”Hey,” She meows, forcing a slight smile, ”I was thinking… you must feel trapped in here some days. Leaf-bare is around the corner, I think today will be one of our last warm days.” She explains, beating around the bush. ”Why don’t you and I go out into the woods? I already asked Butterflytuft if she would watch over your kits. You deserve time to stretch your legs.” Hopefully with any luck the tortie would agree.

Loss and gried. They were feelings Howlfire was well-acquainted with. From a young age she had known loss, losing her sister, her family, her home. Although she had steadily overcome her grief, those losses still haunted her to this day. And now she had the death of her mother to add on to that.

Howlfire mourned the loss of Little Wolf deeply. Her mother had not been a present figure in her life for sometime but Howlfire had held a deep love for her in her heart. Many of her ThunderClan kin had turned their backs on her and Fireflypaw after they had chosen SkyClan, but her mother had never judged, nor had she ever ostracised them. There were many things she had wished to tell her mother but not it was too late and the only comfort she could take was in knowing that like her father had said, somewhere, Little Wolf was looking down on them.

When Howlfire spots Figfeather approaching, she brightens up at seeing her friend. "Oh, it's not so bad," Howlfire chuckled at her comment about feeling trapped. True, some days it could be a bit stifling in here, but her kits were loud and entertaining meaning that it was rarely a dull day with them near. "I'd be glad for a walk in the woods," Howlfire smiled, rising to her paws. It made the choice easy for her knowing her kits would be well seen to. "Lead on when you're ready," She nodded.

Figfeather is surprised to see a grin at all on Howlfire’s face. She doesn’t know what she was expecting- definetely a ore visibly sad cat. Figfeather knows, of course, all cats grieve differently. Not everyone wears it on their sleeve and some easily conceal it. In clan life often you have to in order to keep your clan strong, she can only imagine the pressure to carry on is even heavier on Howlfire as a mother.

Pleased that the torbie has agreed to head out with her she turns around and takes the two of them to the exit of camp. Once they push past the gorse exit Figfeather pushes on through the pine forest. ”Have you been out here much lately?” Figfeather imagines she doesn’t have much time to be.

Howlfire follows along silently as her friend escorts her out of camp. Once past the gorse and into the pine forest fully, Howlfire stops and takes a deep inhale, drinking in the scents of the forest around her. She almost doesn't hear Figfeather's question as she absorbs the moment. "Not since we got back to camp," Howlfire responded, frowning slightly. "As you might imagine, the kits take up a lot of my time. If not in the nursery, I just sit in camp and try and make sure they're not getting into too much trouble." They were her children after all, the likelihood of them not getting into any trouble was slim.

As they walk, Howlfire's eyes drift over to Figfeather. "I never did get to say congratulations to you and Fantastream," Howlfire says with a smile. She knew they had been close but the news of them being mates had been a pleasant surprise. "I'm happy for you. You deserve someone special like that after everything you've been through in the past few moons."

Figfeather’s whiskers quiver with amusement at the idea of Howlfire’s kits stirring up trouble. She wonders if Butterflytuft’s would be the same, it was hard to imagine her sister producing anything but quiet and reserved children… StarClan help her if any of them are blessed with a rowdy personality.

She looks to Howlfire, oddly almost startled by the congratulations. Figfeather feels her skin grow flush underneath her pelt, ”Oh- thank you.” She stiffles out a purr as she steps over a thin patch of undergrowth. It was still odd to believe Fantastream and her were mates- it had all happened so fast, even though it was by Figfeather’s own accord even she was taking some time to process it. She wonders what the brown and white she-cat was up to now.

”It’s definetely nice to be surrounded by cats I’m close with again.” Fantastream, Butterflytuft’s upcoming litter, new additions to the family were welcome after they’ve lost so many. A day does not go by where she doesn’t grieve Snowpath nor Daisyflight, Tallulahwing too…

Uncomfortable with the topic centering on her she focuses it back on Howlfire again, ”How are you and Coyotecrest doing?” Were they both still happy and doing alright?

Howlfire smiles knowingly, seeing Figfeather's slightly flustered reaction to her congratulations. Ah, young love, how sweet it was to see. Fast and unexpected the announcement might have been, but she's happy for them. She hopes whatever they have lasts for a long time.

At the mention of being back with cats she was close with, Howlfire nods in understanding. Of course, her own situation was not like that of journey cats, but she could understand those feelings having briefly been separated from most of her clanmates when forced to shelter in ShadowClan's nursery. The queens there with her had been pleasant enough company but it was not an experience she wished to repeat any time soon. Figfeather asks how she and Coyotecrest were doing and Howlfire goes quiet for a long moment before finally answering.

"We're doing fine," She responds simply at first. It was a short but accurate answer she supposed. They were adjusting to their new lives as parents but that was about it for them really. Coyotecrest had continued to show how reliable he was by checking in on them all regularly and bringing prey for them to share. But despite that, the kits they shared, and the warmth she felt towards him they had never outwardly referred to each other as mates. "I think we're really just trying to adjust to having the kits in our lives now. Because we were in ShadowClan at the time he couldn't be there when they were born but he's been so good to us since we came home," Howlfire said fondly.

The long pause between the two worries Figfeather. She worries she’s touched on a sensitive and unwelcomed subject. The two had been doing well when she had left for the journey, she couldn’t have imagined anything would have changed. When the silence is broken Figfeather is relieved, some stressors due to the rogues but everything now was okay, or at least thats what Howlfire was telling her. Figfeather chooses to believe her and ignore the hesitation that had lingered in her question.

She’s glad to hear Coyotecrest is treating Howlfire fondly, there was a time where Figfeather would’ve trusted a snake before the tom. His WindClan blood had weighed heavy on her mind for quite sometime, it wasn’t until several moons ago she at last forgave him for his betrayal and accepted him as SkyClan. ”He’s a good father then?” Figfeather meows, admittedly not even sure what that meant. She had no father growing up, the idea of two parental figures was foreign to her. Daisyflight had been all she needed. ”That’s good then. Your kits will grow up into fine warriors of SkyClan.” She purrs, ”Are they excited for to become apprentices?”
