A pensive expression weighs on Rowanpaw's features as they traipse in circles around the Sandy Hollow. It is not as if they are the particularly expressive type of cat; a soft frown and a neutral stare are usually their default. However, it did not take much to decipher that something was on Rowanpaw's mind, especially with the way they paced back and forth like a caged tiger.

The instant that their littermates return from their assigned patrol, the chimera stalks up to them with haste, exchanging a grim look. "I have something of importance to share with you both. Come." There is no room for debate as the tunneler apprentice already turns to head for a secluded corner of camp. The three regrettably cannot escape into the territory somewhere to unpack this news away from prying ears, so hopefully Viperpaw wouldn't react loudly. There was no telling how their siblings would take this news; Rowanpaw had nearly lost their grip on their composure as well.

This could not wait. Their kin deserved to know the truth about their other parent, the one who they had believed was dead for their entire lives. According to Sedgepounce, that may not be the case. "There is no easy way to put this..." Rowanpaw sighs once they all situate themselves away from the rest of the clan. Mismatched eyes flick from Viperpaw to Rosepaw. Although they had never met Berrysnap before, there is something hauntingly familiar about the swaths of ginger that their brother and sister sport. "I've discovered the truth about our mother." They begin, bating their breath for only a moment before pushing forth, knowing that delaying the process would not do any good, "She was a loyalist under Sootstar. We were born in DuskClan; she gave us to WindClan when we were newborns."

The truth stings just as much a second time. Repulsion bubbles to their unemotional features, their stomach twisting and turning as if they were falling ill. Both of their parents had been loyal to that murderous tyrant. And what was worse, they were born into the very clan that Rowanpaw hated with a fiery passion. To think that, in another universe, Rowanpaw would have been raised alongside those thieving scum. Instead, Berrysnap had dumped her children onto a father who would end up abandoning them anyway. "She may be still alive." Rowanpaw frowns at the thought, regret and conflict brewing in their gut. They knew that they would never sleep at night without knowing the full truth, but now they knew that they had all been better off thinking that Berrysnap was dead. Was she still alive, living amongst those foxhearted rogues? If they met her in battle, would they know?

*+:。.。 "ROWANPAW!" he gasped, ever unaware of his volume when concern is too busy spiking his blood with adrenaline, "WH-" only to quickly - mercifully- shut his mouth when she gives him that specific sister look that mutes him in an instant. He glances around before dutifully trailing after his keener twin, eyes narrowed with suspicion at what evil-doers might be troubling his sibling. Why, when he gets his paws on them...!

He was expecting an ambush, a dead body, a murder mystery, even! He was ready for Rowanpaw to tell him starclan visited her in a dream, that another fire was coming and they, the heroes of Windclan, were the only ones who could stop it! Shamelessly, he had a bounce in his step at the thought, mind racing with so many 'what-if' scenarios that inevitably ended with praise and adoration for his heroic deeds that he forgot to be worried about Rowanpaw.
Or about how bad news can be.

Was it bad news?

Viperpaw was silent, staring wide-eyed with little thought behind them.
He doesn't interrupt, lets her words sink deeper and deeper - a stone in his throat, a boulder in his belly, gravel filling his paws and spreading roots into the soil of his homeland. His Windclan homeland.
Would being born in Duskclan change that?

When it came to his mother...Viperpaw realized, suddenly, that he never spared her much of a thought. He'd been so focused on dreaming of the day he'd see his father, or bursting with joy at their last fleeting interaction that he'd never considered having a second parent. Gorsepetal fed them and cared for them, she kissed their boo-boos and chided them for being too noisy so...he'd never thought about it too much. Gorsepetal wasn't really someone he'd have called a mom, but she did all the mom things so...so...did he really ever need one?
If Snakehiss was a shadow, then his unknown mother was the breeze. You don't notice it unless it ruffles your fur and, until this very moment, it never had.

She was a duskclan loyalist feels like a sudden gust of frigid air, making his eyes water and his lungs sting as he found it peculiarly difficult to breathe.

Finding out that she was still alive felt like opening his eyes to find himself in the eye of a tornado. If he takes one step out, he'll be swept away.

He stands perfectly, purposefully still.

Rowanpaw is waiting for a response - how long has she been waiting? He wishes the screaming whirlwind around them wasn't just in his own ears. If his twin could hear it too, why wasn't that enough of an answer? He blinks, hard, and gathers the will to reply.
Not one step.

"I...." he pauses, swallowing a lungful of writhing, howling air before continuing, "don't...care."

The blood pounding in his ear almost sounds like a tempest's tumultuous laugh.

"We've lived this long without her" he thinks about Rattleheart, about Bluefrost and Scorchstar, the way they hold their kits, smiles at them, the pride in their eyes when their kits do something impressive or mundane. His knees shake, the wind threatening to rip him from his hold on gravity. He looks to Rowanpaw to anchor him - she'd always been the logical sort, surely she understand that this news ultimately means nothing, right?

Instead, he asks, "How did you find out?"

The inquiry is enough to snap the 'I don't care' facade just enough for a stray gale to loosen his grip, pick him up, and shove him out of the eye's boundary and-

"Did you meet her?"
