*+:q.q The meeting sluggs along and Frightkit couldn't possibly care less. Normally, the kitten would be playing with her mom's tail, or batting at Grasskit's ears, or pulling faces to get Midnightkit to laugh - absolutely anything besides listening to the endless drone of Sunstar's non-stop babbling. Y'know, when Frightkit babbles, she's loose ignored, yet when Sunstar talks a lot, everyone's practically snapping their ears off they strain so hard to listen! Oh well, she's used to it by now, only loosely catching every other word as he trails down the assigned list of reports.

She finds some of the words he spews following Snakehiss's namedrop to be quite fun. Specifically traitor. Sunstar spits the vocab with such vitriol it makes Frightkit giggle. She wonders if it's a bad no-no word, like Fox-dung! She carefully slots it into her memory bank under her list of 'boundary testers' for later. Then Sunstar starts talking about Starclan and...yeah, she's zoning out again.

Attention snaps to a more interesting subject - Pinkpaw, as the girl squeaks a shrill cry of dismay. Context clues entail she's jealous that the other apprentices are getting their warrior ceremonies without her - what a funny thing to be jealous about! After all, she'll get her name eventually too, and it's not like she'll stop seeing her friends after this. She should stop whining so loud about something so minor.
Frightkit sits back with a giggle, ignorant of the encroaching irony.

"many of those within our nursery are of age to tread this same path!"

Now this Frightkit pays attention to.
The whisperings in the nursery that morning had been all for her den-mates. Lakekit, Sheepkit, Ferretkit and Brackenkit had all gotten special grooms followed by carefully laid out instructions about what was to happen during this meeting. They were six moons old now so...blah blah! Of course, Frightkit also made sure her fur was carefully made neat- badgering her mamma until she was given the same treatment as the older kits - because why not?
Why not indeed.

Sunstar begins dolling out names.
Brackenkit is called up, and Frightkit quickly grooms down a tuft of fur on her chest.

Beekit is next, and Frightkit cranes her neck to make sure Nightingalecry is nearby, watching.

Lakekit is finally called, and Frightkit makes sure to shoot him a beaming smile!

Sheepkit's name follows, and Frightkit vows to shout his name loud and proud, feeling genuinely happy for her friend.

Ferretkit comes after, and Frightkit lifts her chin and prepares to step forward herself -

"Before we celebrate our apprentices, however, "

Hm?

Frightkit pauses, almost tripping on her raised, but improperly placed down step.
Hmm? HMM??
Why wasn't Frightkit's name called?
Why wasn't she being allowed to join her friends?

The smile that never quite seems to ever fall from her shadowy face begins to wither and die, burning away just as quickly as the fire that ravaged her home. She looks around, she looks back at Nightingalecry, she glares at Sunstar.

Why wasn't he calling her name?!

Yes, sure, she was two moons younger than her friends. Yes, maybe when she excitedly talked to her mamma about becoming an apprentice today her mamma had tried to gently tell her that wasn't happening - but it had to! It had to be because they were HER friends! Lakekit, Sheepkit, even Ferretkit too! They weren't - they couldn't be allowed to leave her behind!?

She had to be allowed to be an apprentice - not two moons from now, not one moon from now, but Right. This. INSTANT!
She had to!

SUNSTAR HAD TO LET HER!

The day has finally come. Her apprentice would be made into a warrior. Bluepool had done everything she could to prepare him for this moment. She had molded him as best she could, mostly through necessity as she had been born during an unfortunate time in WindClan's history (fraught with darkness and fighting) and the spine that runs along her back is a testament to the speed in which she ahd been forced to learn. But she was still here, still alive, and that's what mattered. That fact alone is something she would coumt as a win. Featherpaw was strong, fast, and as she watches Sunstar call him up, she feels her heart swell with pride for the cat she had trained. Pride and just a touch of sadness. She would miss the barbed-tongued, the witty remarks. They could still patrol together, spar together, but no longer would it be as constant.

She sits beside her mate as she watches Sunstar hobble to the tall rock. She does not blame him for not jumping onto it, coping with the loss of a limb (Especially one as important as a leg) could not be an easy feat. He calls forward his children (what remains of them, at least) And she watches with blurry eyes as they all step forward, her vision glued on a certain red-coated figure. Featherspine he is renamed, for his courage and his tenacity. It is a good name, one which Bluepool cheers proudly. "Lavendertwist! Rivewhisper! FEATHERSPINE! Sunlitwing!" She chants with the rest of the clan, making sure that she cheers extra loudly when Featherspine's name comes around.

And then it is on to the apprentices. Sunstar surprises her by placing his trust in her niece and giving her an apprentice. Inwardly, she questions the decision, spares a glance to the mottled she-cat next to her to see if she could gleam a reaction from the deputies face and guess what she is thinking, but Bluepool is unable to read anything. Despite her reservations, she remains quiet, only speaking again to cheer for the apprentices when it is their turn to.

"Lavendertwist! Rivewhisper! Featherspine! Sunlitwing!"

Scorchstorm calls out with as much joy as she can muster for the newly-named warriors. Even while Lavendertwist looks nervous, even while Sunstar's kits must graduate without their brother, the flame-licked molly tries to cheer with her whole chest. They deserve it, don't they? After everything they've gone through? There is so much hurt to confront later; the gorse walls of camp shield her view from the blackened moors that stretch beyond, great obsidian flats of smoke and soil and burn-rotted flesh. There is freshly-dug dirt in their graveyard. There is lavender missing from their medicine den. But all of that can fade away for a moment while they cheer, can't it?

Not completely. Scorchstorm can't shake the feeling that there ought to be one more body up there with his siblings; can't ignore the grief that Sunstar wears; can't ignore the lingering smell of ash even in their sandy haven. Thank StarClan it didn't get to camp, she thinks, remembering the groan of fire growing oh-so-dangerously close to their gorse walls before being put out by that blessed downpour. Somewhere in the interim of thought, she flashes Lavendertwist an encouraging, weary smile.

Apprentices get named and assigned. Scorchstorm can't deny that she waits to hear her own name called to meet one of the newly-graduated kits, but the time doesn't come. She lets it pass. She's young; she's only a few moons out of apprenticeship herself, with one of them being spent nursing infection. She'll have her day, she thinks, as piercing eyes flit over the celebrated duos. And then to hear of Periwinklebreeze's new assignment... she breaks out into a wide grin. He'd be great at it β€” he'd been great with her, when she had been a kitten herself, stacking rocks with him all those moons ago. Scorchstorm calls out again for all of the named cats, celebrating their new ranks in tandem with the rest of her clan.

Meetings are a commonplace thing - a simple fact of clanlife. It's not the call for attention that is surprising to the blue and brown molly, not even if it comes late. It is the fact she hears her own name called - lost in the sound of dying cheers as sunstars kits receive their names at last, there is her own. hers.

Marmotbite is not a sentimental creature - she finds formalities strange, names an unnecessary label. And yet, there is a strange emotion curling about her belly as she stalks forwards, pelt bristling anxiously despite the fact there's nothing to be afraid of. Becoming a mentor... it's an honor, isn't it? It's proof, that she is powerful - that she is strong. Worthy of respect he says. And sunstar trusts her to pass on what she knows, despite her own rather... unconventional training.

Unlike her own apprenticeship, she does not shy away from touching noses to her new apprentice - ferretpaw is, after all, a far sight neater and less..... offputting than nightmareface had ever been. And she certainly isn't covered in drool and snot and starclan only knows what else. All in all, its a perfunctory thing, small figure twitching away as quickly as she'd arrived, impassive eyes flashing in the sunlight. She'll speak further with them later - but for now she slips back into the crowd, coiling herself back up beside her mate as more names are called forwards and sunstar finally, at last, ends the meeting.

Sunstar calls clan to attention, and puddlekit stares. Of course,, this is nothing new for the child, certainly, but it is a rare thing that the girl actually has good reason too - blue orbs focused unblinkingly on the loss of limb the tom has suffered. She can almost see it still, ghostly vision flickering in and out - a memory of what was and what should've been, as though she expects it to make its reappearance any moment But it doesn't, and so she listens instead - because that is what she does. She watches, and she listens.

Sees, and hears, and knows.

" Lavendertwist - Featherspine - Rivewhisper - Sunlitwing, " unlike her clanmates, she does not raise her voice heavenwards, no. Instead she murmurs them, half absently, voice matching to some unnamed tune that rings in her mind. She will learn them, and will remember them. They are grown now - warriors. She will be like them someday - with a name all of her own, and that knowledge is enough to leave her satisfied.

The apprentice ceremonies are far more interesting - mismatched eyes landing upon her older brother as he's called forwards - soon, he reminds herself, that will be her too. " Lakepaw~! " this time she does cheer- voice ringing out with quiet giggles as she shouts, bouncing on her paws beside their mother. It will be sad, she thinks, to no longer share a den - a nest - with him. But he will be a good apprentice, just like he is a good brother to her.

And surely, he will tell her stories of his adventures, to pass the time until the day she can have some of her own.

Despite the tiredness that clings to him, stubborn as a thorn in his paw or a burr in his pelt, the boy sits proudly upon the earth when sunstar calls for a meeting. Shoulders drawn back, and head held high - as much as the taste of grief hangs in the air, he dos not let it affect him... not more than usual anyways. Tired eyes watch with rapt attention, and while pelt prickles uneasily at the shifting of bodies he can no longer see on his right side, he is used to it by now. He does not move, does not step forwards. There's no need to, not really - a steadfast determination burning in his weary gaze.

Warrior names fall from his tongue as easily as breathing - he knows he will remember each and every one of them, will celebrate alongside them even in spite of the loss of bearflight before his time. Apprentices are made - and while he is sad to see them leave the nursery, he is still proud of them. (and if a certain part of him is ever so slightly relieved that the number of his... future charges is reduced, well nobody but him needs to know that.) There is a momentary pang of greif, of loss, when sheepkit is called forwards - when he becomes sheeppaw. Admittedly, periwinklebreeze had once hoped - dreamed, peraps - of being the one to guide them. He'd made no secret of his fondness for the black and white feline after all, even if his own kits would always hold a special place in his heart, the boy was certainly not far off. But gravelsnap would make a fine choice - a fine mentor, and somehow he cannot begrudge them this. Not when he knows what is yet to come. Knows why he will not be chosen.

The call of his own name is not unexpected of course - nor is the announcement that follows. This, they have already spoke of, and the young warrior bows his head respectfully as it is, at last, announced. Few fathers in windclan had bothered to stick around for their kits, to do more than the bear minimum - fewer still that were not the life-givers in the first place. But he does not mind setting such precedent - windclan has been long overdue for growth, for change - and surely, he will do so with his own two paws if he must.

he pays no mind to the shifting tides of his clanmates, to the uncertain looks he may receive, or even the excited ones. He'd chosen his path long ago, in nights spent secreting away and promises shared of a new life given. He won't falter now - even if his demotion (promotion?) might stifle whatever respect he'd finally started earning from his clanmates.

And if he does look for Gravelsnap once more after te announcement has been made, eyes finding the mentor-apprentice pair easily even in this crowd, well nobody can blame him can they? He knows he will not find what he wants, no matter how much he prays to the stars, but he cannot help but to search for it anyways. If only things were easier, simpler - but they never were, were they?

Certainly not for him

𓆝 . Β° ✦ Grasskit isn't exactly the most clued in. He kind of half listened while sorting through his rocks. He had to make sure they were all there, of course. He still wasn't sure if fire ate rocks or not. Suddenly he recognized his friend's names being called though, and snapped his head up. They're leaving us? He thought, crestfallen. Briefly, he wondered if Ferretpaw was ever going to talk to him again. He hoped he was still good enough for her to be friends with. He'd only recently recovered from his... attack... and he didn't wanna just seem like some weak little baby. A glance at Frightkit told him all he needed to know about how his night was going to go. It would at least be entertaining.

It's real. It's really real. Featherpaw is suddenly Featherspine, and he stands beside Sunlitwing and Rivewhisper and Lavendertwist. Pinkpaw doesn't think that should be allowed... to be an apprentice and then suddenly be a warrior... Pinkpaw hadn't even had time to guess on any names, or ask any of them if they were excited or anything... Is she a bad friend? Possibly the worst ever? No... it was the dumb fire's fault... It made her nose sting and had her paying attention to no - good things... She could still talk to Featherpaw-spine as an apprentice, right?

Uncharicteristically, she joins in on the cheering a little bit late, but she tries to be extra loud to make up for it... " LAVENDERTWIST! SUNLITWING! RIVEWHISPER! FEATHERSPINE! Um... yay! " Her paws tap against the ground. Featherpaw - spine out to look more excited, she thinks, but she guesses she wouldn't blame him for that, this time...

" Brackenpaw! Beepaw! Lakepaw! Sheeppaw! Ferretpaw! " Everyone was growing up... including her, she guesses. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Maybe it was just... a thing? Her head tilts towards Scorchstreak, cheering alongside everyone else. She guesses... Scorchstreak wasn't complaining about what an injustice it was for Featherpaw β€” ugh β€” spine to be a warrior, and for Pinkpaw not to be, so maybe she shouldn't care... hmph.

Featherspine. A name carrying courage and tenacity with it, apparently- the chocolate tom glowed with burnished pride, dark fire rather than biting frost. Against the cheers, Featherspine closed her eyes- felt each cheer settle on her fur and wind between the strands like soft, spring rain. For his siblings, too... all bar one, though Singedpaw would soon catch up, he knew... Rivewhisper, almost comical in its contradiction, but oh-so-fitting. She was a master of stealth, after all. And Sunlitwing's gentle, sunbeam embrace was now immortalised too in their name.

"Lavendertwist! Rivewhisper! Sunlitwing!" For a moment, Featherspine looked to them with joy. It was a fleeting feeling nowadays, so often extinguished with Bearflight's memory, but for once he didn't shrug it away. He let pride and accomplishment bloom within him, like a flower fed by ashes and soot to face the nourishing summer.

Pinkpaw's clamorous voice rose above it all, of course... pitching, cherry-sweet. Bluepool's, too- Scorchstreak, Wolfsong. He found his parents' eye, just for a moment- held it a little longer, just as his head had nestled a little longer beneath Sunstar's chin. I did it. Wordless maw found voice in sun-sharp eyes. At last.

Apprentices too were forked out... and thus was duty to cheer for them, wasn't it? Featherspine did so, but with each words felt a strange unsettlement in her stomach that clashed very suddenly with the mounting triumph that had been there before.

What now?

Sunstar's gathering shout roused the warrior to immediate attention. Turning course from the nursery, the ruddy tom trotted into the growing crowd. Finding an empty spot near Rattleheart as she caught up with Downypaw, Redheart trained his focus onto the leader. Ears twitching at the mention of Snakehiss, eliciting a low growl from his throat.

Bastard. He had no sympathy for that traitor or any of Sootstar's other goons. Nodding along with an affirming glare, it didn't take much for him to relate to Sunstar's disdain. Snakehiss had spat cruelty and madness just as the rest of the loyalists had.

Only when the sunlit rosette'd feline brought on the start of ceremonies did his pelt lay flat. Rivepaw. Immediately he was all ears and whiskers as she stepped in alongside her siblings and Lavenderpaw. Pinkpaw's fussing only a chilling reminder despite the intent. Their chest ached noticing the sorrowful lilt to her walk. No cat would say it, but he was sure every cat felt it. Bearflight should be up there with them.

Putting on a brave face, he watched with warmth as his friend earned her warrior name. Heart swelling as Sunstar's voice rang out.

Her eyes locked with his, and Redheart prayed she saw unadulterated pride in his gaze, even if it was slightly watery from underlying sadness. Knowing Bearflight would be absent tonight was beyond words; he couldn't even pretend to know that pain. But he hoped to be a cat Rivewhisper could rely on, especially in hard times and dark nights.

As the audience rose into shouts of congratulations, he quickly joined in. "Lavendertwist! Featherspine, Sunlitwing!" They were finally warriors together, and he needed this win. Windclan needed it. She needed it. Sucking in a breath, he rode out the last of the shouts. Thunderously, crying out his friend's name and beaming his brightest smile. "RIVEWHISPER!"

Eventually, the crowd grew quiet, and in turn, he settled down. His tail thumping excitedly as his denmates earned their apprentices. A smidge of anxiety and wonder fell onto his concious. I wonder when I'll get my own apprentice? Redheart wasn't sure what he'd have to offer. I'll just have to do my best if the time comes.

For now, his eyes had other plans: to latch longingly onto a familiar bronze and frosty coat. His interest piqued with a tail flick at the mention of Periwinklebreeze, and his earlier smile returned. The idea of getting to spend time in the nursery didn't seem so bad. Redheart always had a blast watching over the little rascals. His favorite part was making up goofy games and watching the kits' faces light up with every fantastical tale.

Would I be a good dad? A nursery queen? He pondered it for a moment longer and shook his head thoughtfully. Not anytime soon.

He wanted a hearty experience as a warrior and loved the freedom of living along the hills. Kits were definitely not a part of life he was ready for anytime soon. For now, he was content to be here for Riverwhisper, to support her in any way he could.

As the ceremony continued, he made sure to stay close, offering silent support and sharing in the joy of the moment. The future could wait; tonight was about celebrating the strength and unity of WindClan, and the achievements of those they held dear.
