  • The realization sits like irons wrapped around her ankles, dragging down to the riverbed where fish swim in ignorant glee. The bubbles that dribble from her maw towards the surface scream for deniability, to be able to hold onto the illusion that they are not lost breath, that she might still cling to what rapidly escapes her reach.

It's fruitless... the river water is impatient, demands to be heard, to consume you wholly.

"RiverClan," it is home... and suddenly, a far heavier weight than it ever had been before. It's been weeks now.. hasn't it? Since charcoal had pressed its warmth against her side, left burn marks below the surface of her skin that no one else seemed to be able to see? There were a flicker there, a fire, that struggled to burn. The embers grew perilously dim now... "... Gather.."

It is not for the same reasons as she had called for in times past, it rings out in a voice much more stern and steady than hers- she is a mockingbird, standing atop a nest she'd stolen and played imposter in. The feeling doesn't go away, not even with the passage of time. "We are not... without our losses... this moon." Streaks of ashy memory sting the corners of her eyes, make a mockery in the similar shades that adorn newborn kits who will never know her. "Brookstorm... never recovered... and walks with her... family in StarClan now. Crashingtide... as well... is assumed dead. Scraps of his fur... were found with fox scent..." It felt like a lifetime ago now...

"But we... are not without her... not entirely. She leaves behind... a loving mate... and three kits; Redkit, Rivuletkit, and.... Algaekit," the name feels like molasses on her tongue, what once had been a teasing symbol of a new mother's joy instead a tightly-bound red rope around a young neck. If that child was lucky, they wouldn't follow in Lichentail's paw-steps. "Lilacbird and Swiftfire... have welcomed their own litters... Twilightkit, Dawnkit... Dreamkit, Roekit and Amberkit. If you have the chance... be sure to... congratulate them... say hello."

"We also... harbor a new, young life... who was found patiently awaiting his mother. She has... not yet returned.. so we will care for him... in her stead. Fox-" and it is still amusing to have another, when Foxtail stands so proudly as a representative of the name, "From this day forward... until you receive your apprentice name... you will be known as Foxkit."

"Welcome... to RiverClan. And..." Her gaze shifts towards a halo of light off to the side, ever meek and ever humble, "Congratulations to our... medicine cat. She has... visited with StarClan... and been given her full name- Moonbeam."

The scruffy molly can't help but feel anxious the longer she has to listen to her own voice, parroting a style of announcement that isn't hers. Smokestar should be here... should be doing this. Should be promoting these fine young warriors that had so proven themselves to be deserving- I won't.. punish them for his absence, and somewhere, a part of her knows it is more than that.

"Asphodelpaw, Bubblepaw... step forward." And with whatever strength still sits in her weary bones, the reed-wraith stands a little taller, pale eyes flicking briefly towards the sky as if fearful StarClan will scold her for usurping a duty that isn't yet hers. "I, Lichentail of RiverClan," the clouds do not angrily stir, no lightning is summoned yet to smite her, "Ask our ancestors... in Silverpelt... to look upon these apprentices." Her tongue feels dry, like she has not had a drink of water in moons, that her body may just wither away to dust at any moment, "Do you swear... to protect and defend your clan... and honor the warrior code?"

It is both surprising and expected to hear the call to gather come from Lichentail. A meeting taking place both late and too soon, it felt wrong to gather as a clan for a large meeting such as this without Smokestar leading it. Despite this it felt right, too. Life continued on in Smokestar's absence, death continued, cats grew in size and knowledge and even though it should not have been a deputy but a leader speaking the words to StarClan Lichentail spoke them anyway, doing what she must so that life could continue as it was meant to. It solidified the idea that if Smokestar would not return that she would do what was best for the clan, and that when choosing a deputy Smokestar had chosen correctly in the end.

Silently she moved from her den to look upon Lichentail as she spoke, to hear the news that she had to share and the cats that would be promoted from apprentices, having finally finished their training and been assessed. Losses were shared and so was that that was gained, eyes flicked over to Fox - now Foxkit - and offered the small thing a smile of encouragement should she be looked at before eyes moved to apprentices that were soon to be warriors, waiting to hear them speak and answer the question that most cats got to answer in their lives.

It started out with Smokestar only missing for a couple hours. But then that turned into days... into a week, and now weeks. It doesn't feel right hearing Lichentail call the clan over for a meeting, and he's certain she feels the same exact way. The meeting is overdue, but it is... understandable considering the circumstances. The clan has been busy; searching for any sign that Smokestar is alive, so they can bring him home. Foxtail doesn't want to say he's losing hope— he doesn't want to give up on Smokestar, truly, he doesn't want to. But with each passing day with no signs, he begins to grow worried.

While it doesn't feel right to see Lichentail handling the meeting, it isn't surprising at this point. ...It is expected; she is next in line to be leader, and is the cat who'd be in-charge if their leader was away.... or in this case, missing. The clan continues to move forward, despite Smokestar's absence. New RiverClanners were born, cats died, and some clanmates eagerly await for their warrior ceremony. Foxtail pads over to the gathering crowd and quietly sits down beside his apprentice, wrapping his tail around his paws. He looks over at the two apprentices who will be made warriors today— Bubblepaw and Asphodelpaw. He wonders if Smokestar ever discussed their future names with Lichentail, or will she have to decide on their names herself? His heart aches for their deputy, Foxtail misses and prays for their leader's safe return, but he can't even begin to imagine the pressure it puts upon her.

The call from Lichentail draws Salmonshade forth, blue eyes lit with a curious flame. So used to Smokestars calls, the one from Lichentail was... odd, but not unwelcomed, more than welcomed in fact... She's glad to see her friend (does this word sit comfortably on her tongue now? perhaps, perhaps...) up there, though her heart aches for the loss that is Smokestar.

But Lichentail would do just fine, if... If it so comes to it, Salmonshade can rest easy at night knowing this. But it's a big change, shifting from a deputy status to leading the whole clan. How did Smokestar feel about it, back then Smokethroat, had he been nervous? And Cicadastar- there had been no previous deputy, just a leap of faith. Did it stress Lichentail out, knowing how the clan looks at them? Maybe I should do something nice for her, she tilts her head.

She takes a sharp inhale in as Lichentail lists their losses: Brookstorm, succumbed to her drowned state. Crashingtide, not confirmed to be dead like Smokestar but lost all the same, to a fox. But on lighter news, new kits have been brought in to the clan- should always be a joy but Salmonshade only feels dread settling in her stomach. Stars, it's going to be harder to visit Hazecloud now with the nursery so... full. A new addition from outside the clan as well, Foxkit, though they had already had a fox before... Her gaze lingers on Foxtail for just a second, trying to gauge his reaction. Moonbeams celebration is next and her gaze melts from the previous ice that had settled, offering Moon an encouraging dip of her head if she just so happened to look over.

Something ugly twists in her heart but its easier to snuff out than in previous meetings.

Asphodelpaw and Bubblepaw are up on the stand for meetings and she watches, narrowing her eyes. Tonight, with the new warrior code, would be their vigil... She can only hope they're ready.

She listens from the entrance of the nursery, eyes weary and pelt dull. Behind her are the soft squeaks and snores of Brookstorm’s legacy - kittens announced by Lichentail in a tone somber yet hopeful. Robinheart knows her mate’s memory will live on; not just through her but through the deputy as well. There was no denying the bond the two shared in the time Lichentail mentored Brookstorm. She only wishes, as she has done day after exhausting day, that the blue molly could have overcome her illness - could be seated among the crowd with pride shining in grassy eyes as their children’s arrival is announced.

Robinheart glances down at her paws as Lichentail continues the meeting (a meeting wrought with sorrow as Smokestar hasn’t returned yet), ears tilting as Fox is named Foxkit, Moonbeam’s name and position are made publicly known, and apprentices prepare for warriorhood. It bitters her tongue just how easily life seems to go on. How change is so happily accepted and yet she is cemented in her grief, unyielding despite wanting to be joyful for her clanmates. Perhaps one day she will be…

A kit begins to cry and Robinheart retreats back into the confines of the nursery, cooing weakly to her child while attempting to hear the muffled words of the blue lynx as they name the newest warriors and conclude the meeting.

*+:。.。 There was a lot in his apprenticehood that Asphodelpaw regretted.

He'd been looking forward to this day since he was first apprenticed at 3 moons, vowing under his breath when seeking out his mother and father in the crowd that he'd stand here again a moon early, earning his warrior name as a prodigy. Instead, he stands before Lichentail, barely redeemed and bordering on washed-up. His chest squeezed that he was to be made a warrior under Lichentail instead of Smokestar - not because the woman was any less of a worthy leader but...Smokestar had been his leader for almost his entire apprentice hood, it felt almost painful to be denied the chance to become a warrior under the tom he'd looked up to nearly his entire life. On the other end of the coin, he felt it was fitting in a punishing way that it would be Lichentail bestowing his name. The same woman who had snarled at him for his disobedience now with the power to deny his ranking or approve it. It was humbling. A reminder that he wasn't the best he'd sought out to be, not by a long shot.

So the young man stands before his new leader, icy blue eyes firm despite the cold creeping over his paws. A part of him wishes he had more time to prove himself. More time to be better. He's still a dry paw, after all. Still a clan humiliation. Still...barely anything. Through the corners of his eyes, he looks at the cats gathered. Perhaps it's his imagination, but he feels as though they're all looking through him, around him, excited for Bubblepaw than him. More than humble...Asphodelpaw feels unbearably small.

But he keeps his chin up, refusing to let his negative self-view affect him. Life goes on, as the trail of new kitten names ensures. Whether or not he belongs, or does things above the bar, Asphodelpaw will continue to devote his everything to his clan. Hopefully, even in small ways, he was still needed.

So, when he's asked if he swears to defend his clan, his home, and honor the code, there's no hesitation or tremble in his voice when he responds;

"I do."

So much joy had become diluted with tragedy in recent days. What blessings Swiftfire, Lilacbird and Robinheart had brought should only be paired with hope for RiverClan's future. Joined with the luxury of a river fat with fish, with apprentices growing into their warrior names. Instead it is shadowed by the heartbreak that the Clan shared through heartache and shed tears.

Hazecloud looked up at her mate, sat stationary outside the nursery with the urge to curl around the lynx point and shield her from the pain. It's not fair, she thought, selfishly. The man meant to assign her kits to mentors, meant to name them as warriors, now lost to the tide. He was supposed to see her. See that she was not just an impatient molly but his best hunter, his best queen with claws.

Not to say Lichentail wasn't deserving of the position she is made to fill. Hazecloud knew her mate had rightfully fought and climbed her way up through every hurdle and curve thrown at her. Through Cicadastar's spiraling discourse, through gut-wrenching disease and betrayal left and right. Lichentail remained sturdy through it all, baring it through gritted teeth.

A gentle sigh pressed through, quiet as a breeze between the reeds, and awaited the words of their new warriors.

It'd been some time since Houndstride exiled himself to the back of a clan meeting. He'd started gathering some pride, some certainty in himself. Wasn't all that hard to sit and listen to a cat he'd grown to respect, but — maybe that wasn't the only reason for it, 'cause now that he's looking up at Lichen instead, the tom's isolated himself once more. In times of sickness or poor moods he knows he has a tendency to retreat into himself. This, though. . . it feels near as bad as coming back to learn of Cicadastar's death. And no matter how much he tries to promise himself that's not what it is, this gorge is a stars-damned killer. He hadn't made it that far and the rocks had still bashed him to pieces. Anyone who went over. . .

The thought is branded into his eyes, so the warrior looks down as Lichentail keeps talking. Doesn't mention who they're really missing. Could he blame her for that? Any of them, for sitting in willful ignorance even though it makes him want to burst right out of his skin to– to sit here and know despite it all that what they're dancing around is sure as can be. He knows better than to make it all about him. But stars above if his tether to this place grew closer to snapping with every fresh wound. What'd once been a solace to him had now cost him two of the finest leaders he'd known. And, inevitably, it would take more. His trust in StarClan's still there, but can that ever be enough?

Can the dead ever be enough to coax him through the rest of this life? He chews the side of his cheek until the tang of blood touches his tongue. This'll be over soon. Then he'll head right back out of camp for as long as his paw'll let him. Insomnia's a dear old friend: the only one left, too.

  • They answer the call to action with the gnashing of eager teeth and bright eyes... This has been the path, always will be the path... being a warrior is all you can hope to achieve and sometimes you're given the burden of more. A burden that feels far heavier now than it ever had before; what was the point of trust if it meant it couldn't save you? What was the point of honesty if your death felt as dishonorable as a liar's? Drawing in a breath of courage, a flick of pale eyes towards unwavering spring-greens, the deputy grasps at the escaping words as if a balloon rapidly deflating of air.

"Bubblepaw..." and there are sparkles in her eyes that fizzle with delight, "Aspenhaze has trained you... very well." She is certain Petalnose is glowing with pride at her mate's success... hopes that Aspenhaze does not feel slighted that it is her giving this ceremony instead of Smokestar. "You shine... as a beacon of joy... amongst your peers... and remained unwavering... in the face of hardship. Your loyalty... and sensibility are... your greatest strengths. For those traits... you will be known as..."

"Bubbleburst!" An explosion of river song- the splash of fresh mists on a hot day. She is a breath of fresh air... and a welcome addition to the warrior's den.

The solemnness that haunts Asphodelpaw's stoic features stand as testament to his good memory... that he remembers the tense conversation she'd had with him. That he wouldn't forget that his value in this clan came from cooperation... and that he could not let fear and paranoia rule him. Tucking her chin just slightly in a silent nod, she's willing to acknowledge it too... that he's come far from that moment and has further more to go. "Asphodelpaw... Crashingtide molded a great warrior... out of you. You honor his memory with... your diligence... and strong sense of duty... I have no doubt you will.... be a reliable warrior... to your peers." The corners of her lips turn to smile, to ease any fears he has that she means to spite him. "Your hard-working... persistent nature, you will be known as," and she hopes beyond hope that she does not make a fool of herself donning these new warriors names they would come to loathe, "Asphodelrain." A chilling drip of cool water down the spine... washing away whatever taints the soul and leaving behind something refined... clean... pristine. A fresh start in every sense.

In a motion she'd seen practiced tens of times since RiverClan's founding, she tilts her head up and with a rasping call, "StarClan honors you... and I welcome you... as warriors of RiverClan!" While cheers break out in rampant joy for their newest members, Lichentail takes the time to clear her throat, try to ease the scratchy feeling that grows more agonized the longer this meeting goes on- who had decided these ceremonies needed so much flavor text? "As per... the warrior code... tonight you will sit in silent vigil."

Once the noise has dimmed, she feels the crushing of a dead-weight upon her back again. "I know... we still haven't... found Smokestar but I implore you... all to please... look a little longer," and it grates in more than just her throat to beg at them like they haven't already tried their hardest. It sinks like a blade between her shoulder blades, slowly... painfully... that this may be her answer already. That there will be no finding Smokestar... "Until... such a time... that we find him or...." Unwilling to put the possibility to words, she chooses to forego its mention, "Houndstride... If you'd please... oversee Beepaw's training...?"

"And... Petalnose.. will be taking over Cicadapaw's training... while Iciclefang remains... in the nursery."

"That'll be all." And as she descends to the crowd again, she cannot shake the feeling that there is a ghost walking at her side... that maybe she already knows the answer. That maybe it's time to give in.

"GOT A LITTLE CASH NOW SO THAT SKIRT IS DIOR"
Though Bubblepaw has not ever been one to wish her life away, she has been dreaming of this moment for a long time. Tales of warriorhood told by her mother replayed in her mind, and now it was her very own turn. The young silver molly is beaming throughout the entire ceremony. She remembers all of her firsts, and the moment that she had been apprenticed to Aspenhaze. The training had been intense, and although it had taken her longer than others to learn how to fish she'd eventually been successful in that avenue too.

She is prickly with excitement as Lichentail calls her forward. Bubblepaw had once dreamed of this moment under Cicadastar, then Smokestar, but the young girl isn't picky. It is a blessing to be given a warrior name regardless, and to be given her name alongside friends like Asphodelpaw and Moonbeam is a blessing as well. This is just the way things are sometimes. When she pledges herself to RiverClan and the warrior code, it hardly sounds like her own voice coming from her mouth.

Bubblepaw grins from ear to ear (if it were possible for her smile to widen any more) when Lichentail turns her attention to the bouncing molly. And before she knows it, Bubblepaw is no longer a -paw, but is now a Bubbleburst. Even without Lichentail's explanation of her name, Bubbleburst has already fallen in love with it. The words that follow only serve to sweeten the compound name that already hold so much meaning for the newly-made warrior. "Thank you, I hope to make you and StarClan both proud as a warrior," she says, voice crackling with all the excitement that she's managed to contain.

"And congratulations to you, too," she turns to Asphodelrain and nods, still smiling. She turns back to the rest of the crowd that have gathered for the meeting. All that's left now is their vigil. Bubbleburst searches for Mosspool, Aspenhaze, and Cricketpaw in the crowd. Are they proud of her too?

The call from Lichentail draws Fogshore’s attention from his grooming session, odd-colored eyes lit with a curiousness. He was used to Smokestar’s meeting calls, but no matter it was a strange change of pace. The cat that would name the next generation of kits, assign mentors, and then name apprentices into warriors was now lost forever. He went over to the gathering cats, to settle in a random spot.

The feathered feline let his gaze look up at the new leader, who was perched atop of Smokestar’s throne. An ear flicked, as Lichentail announced the losses first of Brookstorm and Crashingtide. He was not close to either, but he sent his silent prayers.

On a more positive note, she introduced the fresh litters that were buzzing around the nursery, as well as a new kitten who entered the nursery by the name Foxkit. He glances at Foxtail for a moment. Interstinging choice. Moonbeams celebration is next of earning her full medicine cat name. It was a nice name, it fitted the new medicine cat.

Despite, the losses and new Riverclanners that are born, some of his clanmates eagerly await their ceremonies. Bubblepaw and Asphodelpaw. He turns his head slightly, to watch the pair step up with a silent hum. Tonight, with the new warrior code in place, this will be their first vigil as full warriors. Curling his tail over his paws, as he listens to the meeting continue. As Lichentail dubbed Bubblepaw and Asphodelpaw were renamed too Bubbleburst and Asphodelrain. He joins in the chorus of cheers for the new warriors. When the cheers died down, Lichentail announced apprentices were getting entrusted to new mentors. After the meeting was over, he got up onto his paws to leave the crowd.

I HEARD, I HEARD ACROSS THE MOONLIT SEA — Houndstride would be overseeing the rest of her training and she has to do everything in her power to not wrinkle her snout in the slightest. She didn't want a different mentor especially with all of them still searching for Smokestar and she refuses to believe that he's truly gone. The thought alone makes her chest ache, her bat-like ears pressing against her raven pelt, and she doesn't meet the gaze of her new mentor. Even her brother, Cicadapaw, recieves a new mentor for him to train underneath and she can't imagine how he feels right now... With a feathery sweep of her tail, Beepaw takes a few steps back and chooses to not go near Houndstride nor does she take in the achievements made by her former denmates. Everything felt... Wrong.

When the meeting is dismissed, the black smoke already disappears from the crowd and heads towards the apprentices den until she was needed to head out on a patrol again in search of Smokestar.

Lichentail utters the word RiverClan like they've never spoken it before- like it is something unfamiliar and sits weirdly and heavily upon their tongue. Eveningkit does not possibly understands the whirlpool of feelings that come with replacing someone way too soon; whatever relationship a deputy and leader has is something that is wholly shrouded in mystery, only showing itself to curious kitten-eyes in pieces. The world can feel so limiting sometimes.

Regardless of it all, Eveningkit's eyes shine as she witnesses Lichentail call her first proper meeting. Not like that is something new... but with the Clan waiting for further events with bated breath, Eveningkit has already come to terms with the fact that her mom will become a leader. Already is, technically, with the absence of the previous.

Hazecloud sighs beside her. Something tells Eveningkit it's either unintentional or she simply hadn't noticed her kits around her. Letting gravity pull her towards Hazecloud, Eveningkit pushes the side of her face into a tangle of gray fur.

But after that, the meeting requires her undivided attention. Apprentices have become warriors- and the air within camp remains languid.

No matter. Eveningkit will call those names like nothing is amiss. "Asphodelrain! Bubbleburst!" Hehe, Bubbleburst. Saying it a few times in a row sounds funny... Bubbleburst, Bubbleburst, Bubbleburst.
