BAREFOOT IN TALL GRASS — LESSON + PATROL

── .∘°°∘. ── With Cottonpaw already at his side —far rounder than it once was— Wolfsong assesses the cats currently in camp. Her first lesson, he had decided, will not be confined within the medicine den, but taken out onto the moors, where he will need her most when he is...indisposed. Maintaining the supply of herbs will be the most inaccessible to him of all his responsibilities. As excited as he is to finally meet the kits he can now feel moving in thoughtless twists, their arrival will spell many changes in his life that will take time.

Time he hopes he will be afforded.

"You are not to leave camp alone as my apprentice. It is not that I do not trust you," he adds, quick to disavow any such thought. "But I am sure I do not need to lecture you on what RiverClan is capable of." He holds her gaze with his sole eye for a moment before turning away. "Venomstrike, Snakehiss, and Mousepaw, come with me. This will be Cottonpaw's first patrol learning to identify herbs, and I would prefer it to be safe." Though his opinions on Snakehiss are well known, perhaps some responsibility will temper some of his unpleasantness.

WOLFSONG of WINDCLAN FORMER ROGUE TURNED MEDICINE CAT. 36 MOONS, HE/HIM, NPC X NPC. MATES WITH SUNSTRIDE (07/05/2023). BIOGRAPHY, PINTEREST, & PLAYLIST.
  • ★★★☆☆ WOUNDS: You're (mostly) in safe paws. You'll know if he's less experienced if he asks for your permission to try a treatment. No wound can scare him away from knowledge. — ★★★☆☆ INFECTION: He can prevent most infections. If you feel feverish, let him know— he'll hum thoughtfully over herbs and sniff your wound before saying, "With your blessing..."
  • ★☆☆☆☆ ACHES & PAINS: If you complain to him of pain, he'll ask where. If it's a headache, you'll likely feel a bit better. For anything else, "Try this, if you'd like, and tell me how you feel." — ★☆☆☆☆ BROKEN BONES: At best. he can ask you to remain lying down in the den. He may try to distract you with conversation while he considers what herb to feed you.
  • ★★★★★ TRAVELING HERBS: Going somewhere? No worries; Wolfsong knows just what you need to stay hale and healthy during your journey. The rest is up to you. — ☆☆☆☆☆ KITTING: He doesn't remember what it was like to be born. Coincidentally, that is the extent of his familiarity with kitting. At least he won't leave you without moral support.
  • ★☆☆☆☆ POISONS: It's best if you avoid eating anything unfamiliar to you— it's probably just as unfamiliar to Wolfsong. The best he can do is offer you yarrow and sit with you. — ★★☆☆☆ ILLNESS: If it's white or greencough, you'll likely recover. Otherwise, prepare for odd concoctions and the usual request that you consent to a little trial-and-error.

Guarding the medicine cat and his apprentice were not on Mousepaw's list of things that he enjoyed doing. It got him out of camp, sure, but it meant that there was very little time to do anything else, in the unlikely event that something happened that the two wouldn't be able to handle themselves. Despite all this, Mousepaw was just an apprentice, and Wolfsong was a higher ranked cat than he was, so he had to do what he said, and he had to do it with as little complaining as possible. The apprentice had found out long ago that many cats didn't like to be complained to when they told someone to do something.

Silently getting up, he head over towards where the small group Wolfsong asked for began to gather, looking over to Cottonpaw and choosing to stand by her when possible, the only other apprentice in the group. She used to be a tunneler, and it wasn't her fault that she wasn't one anymore - it was StarClan's will that she was to be Wolfsong's apprentice - so he held no ill will towards her for that.

sorrelsprig is curious. for all her time in this clan, for all the medicine cats they've had, she thinks wryly — she has never actually tagged along on one of these.

"mind if i come along?" she asks, already padding over to the small group that forms. "i'd meant to head out again anyway. the weather's nice for a walk." it's been a slow day... the nature of greenleaf. the patrol would be good company, and wolfsong is right, after all — they can't afford to lose their little medicine cat apprentice. an extra warrior wouldn't be a bad idea, she reasons, should wolfsong acquiesce.

she'll probably break off to hunt once they've been out a bit — she could use a good chase.

── .∘°°∘. ── //hi tiny, it's good to see you in windclan! just a quick note that patrols are intended for those tagged, just in case you were wanting sorrelsprig to be allowed!

As Mousepaw approaches, seemingly intent on taking Cottonpaw's side, he gives the apprentice a greeting nod. He realizes that it will not be many moons before he will see his kits apprenticed, and then possibly joining him on patrols like this one. He is eager to see what warriors they will make, but that is a future waiting after he gets to hold them close to his belly and purr into their ruffs, which he hopes will be as flame-burnished as Sunstride's. All his daydreaming comes to an abrupt halt when a face he had not spoken to approaches their small group.

Sorrelsprig asks to accompany them, but he shakes his head slowly. "Not this day," he says, and he glances at the gorse wall. "There is no doubt a hunting patrol with room. I only have so many sides in need of watching, after all— large as they may have become."

( 🐍 ) The moor runner perked up at the sound of his name and would walk forward with a smile present on his maw, he was more than happy to help out the medicine cat recalling the time that he had been a comforting presence during the gathering and he was grateful for that tremendously. Venomstrike takes Wolfsong's side before watching the exchange from Sorrelsprig and the the expecting queen, he feels a tad awkward and bad that she could not tag along but perhaps another day would the other fellow warrior be allowed to tag along. His claws unsheathed digging into the soil briefly then claws withdrawing, he knew whatever potentially came their way he'd be ready to protect and defend his clanmates. He feels honored in a way that Wolfsong trusts him.

Drawing in a breath, Venomstrike nods slowly to Wolfsong "Ready whenever you are," It was only a matter of waiting for Snakehiss to join their party, the moor runner flicking his short tail to the sides as he waited patiently. There would definitely be no complaints from him when it came to helping someone else.

Obsidian ears perk up as the voice of the rather rotund medicine cat addresses him directly, along with the names of a couple of other clanmates. Huh — Wolfsong recruiting him for a patrol? However, it is quickly revealed that they are only accompanying the healers for the purpose of Cottonpaw's training and nothing more. Well, as much as the very sight of the golden-hued tom typically makes Snakehiss's muzzle wrinkle in distaste, he supposes it wouldn't be so bad if he stuck closer to Cottonpaw.

In the moment, Cottonpaw's sudden and star-sponsored ascension to the barren rank of medicine cat apprentice had been intriguing. How was it that Sootstar's fuzz-brained daughter had been chosen by the ancestors to commune with them and heal WindClan's sick and wounded? Perhaps StarClan wasn't satisfied with her training thus far. Perhaps they specifically wanted to connect with a descendant of the Moor Queen in order to strengthen their bond with Sootstar. Whatever the case, Snakehiss had felt puzzled but also hopeful for Cottonpaw's new path. After all, if he kept growing closer to her then perhaps he would gain Sootstar's favor ( and, more importantly, StarClan's ).

So, the green-eyed feline parts from his spot in camp to join the forming group, assessing those gathered. He eyes Mousepaw through slitted pupils, noting his proximity to the medicine cat apprentice, and slithers up next to Cottonpaw on her opposite flank in an attempt to steal the she-cat's attention and fixate it on him. Snakehiss doesn't necessarily know her relationship with any of the other apprentices, but he can't afford to let their budding connection slip out of his grasp.

Snakehiss remarks in a murmur delivered directly into the ear of Cottonpaw, "Huh, you're already beginning to stink like a bunch of stuffy leaves." Cottonpaw should ( hopefully ) know that he's only joking ( or maybe half-joking), in that snarky sort of Snakehiss fashion, as he managed a wry smirk upon his muzzle. He never cared for how the medicine den smelled, so it was rather unfortunate that now the blue smoke would now have that scent clinging to her pelt.

Cottonpaw is more than eager, her excitement only barely contained by bouncy paws as they shift her weight back and forth. A lesson is a lesson is a lesson, of course - but her first being out on the moors is an excellent decision made by her mentor. She can't help but wonder if it's not for any reason but to get her energy out before the day's end. In any case, he splays his rules out to her, and is met with a momentary pout before she nods with agreement. Better safe than sorry, especially after being proven a prize in someone else's awful game (her face stings just thinking about it.)

The blue smoke waits (im)patiently for the others to arrive. Wolfsong tries to direct the curious Sorrelsprig away, and Cottonpaw tries to commit to memory the warriors that've helped her thus far. Maybe with her mentor's soon restraints to camp, she can pester some of the lingering ones to help her out. Mousepaw joins and takes up her side, and she whispers something akin to, "Isn't this exciting?" towards him, though she doesn't have much time to actually entertain the conversation.

Snakehiss takes up her other side and she inclines her gaze to towards him. He mutters something about her scent and she lets out a soft, girlish giggle. Bumping her hip into his (though she lets her tail linger close to his for a few moments longer,) she continues, "I miss the tunnels 'nd all, but I gotta say, leafy kinda beats muddy right now. Oh -" The moor runner's attempts to distract her are successful but fleeting as she turns her gaze back to Mousepaw, "Sorry. You're alright smelling, I promise," she jests.

Perhaps to avoid embarrassment between the two toms, Cottonpaw pulls away from them, nodding acknowledgement towards Venomstrike before joining Wolfsong's side. "Alright, where too first?"
