wc rebels BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER [🌙] Loyalist Attack

A wild look burns into Cottonfang, "My… whims? You idiot, both of you!" She spats in the direction of her children, her tail lashing against the freezing air. Sootstar had thought- surely- one last chance, one last offer of forgiveness and they would've remembered where their loyalties lay. Yet firmly, they stood with the rosette tom whose icy gaze pierces into her.

"WindClan is me. It lives and dies with me!" she roars, ducking to avoid the blow to her throat. Sunstride is an opponent much bigger than her, stronger than her, she'd need the swiftness and wits of a rabbit to continue to avoid his relentless blow. It would be his pelt caked with blood tonight, he would never stand over her.

Sootstar lunges for his hind legs, a nip here, a nip there before darting away again. Her motives would be to irritate and to tire him out, she would have him begging for mercy. "We could've ruled the forest together, Sunstride. You've thrown it all away, for what?!" This time she tries to drag her claws right above his belly her eyes watching for an opportunity to take a dive for the soft and delicate flesh. She'd kill him just as she had killed Hyacinthbreath, then she'd kill Wolfsong and her traitor children!

Traitors. She spits the word into the snow and Scorchpaw sees Badgermoon, white-tipped ears tearing away from the moor with blood on his paws — had she imagined him, or was the memory real? She's not sure anymore. She just remembers Sootstar, writhing beneath her facade. I had a dream... StarClan warned me.... But now StarClan has forsaken the moor-queen. She no longer walks with them — now it is Scorchpaw who walks with them, who is empowered by their divine blessing; it is Scorchpaw who is on the side of heaven. As long as she believes this, Sootstar cannot hurt her.

The moments before the fighting are calm in the same way foundries are calm. The air spits tense, pressurized heat; she swears she hears a war-drum clang above the blood rushing through her ears. And then the molten pour; the scream of claws through the air, of teeth to throats, of clanmate turning against clanmate. It is WindClan's civil war. Scorchpaw can only stand and watch for the first few seconds as Sootstar descends upon her mentor. Sunstride is more than capable of fending her off, but her mind sparks with ferocious anger. Sootstar would not rip her mentor away — not again. Not like Badgermoon. They are not traitors of WindClan, they are its knights, and by StarClan she would spend all of herself to defend it. By StarClan she would help her mentor now, because she couldn't back then.

"StarClan damns you!" Scorchpaw bellows, sprinting towards Sunstride and Sootstar. Her flame-streaked pelt seems alight with her rage. "You are not WindClan!" She sprints towards @SOOTSTAR 's flank, hoping to bowl over the dusky she-cat and sink her fangs into flesh wherever they could find purchase. She would not let Sunstride be killed!

⁀➷ The question of want does not brush Foxglare's mind as he stands stone-still in the face of impending battle. There was no point in asking himself whether he wanted to fight — or do anything for that matter — when a fight was demanded of them. 'Fight, or die,' hissed the rattlesnake from atop her false throne. She spits at them for no longer worshiping her and curses them for turning their backs on their soot-shadowed false idol.

Without a medicine cat, Sootstar's ilk would bleed out and rot away from their wounds like many fallen fruits from a tree wrought with illness, and Foxglare found he did not feel pity for them. If the infection Sootstar brought unto Windclan needed to be bled out by hand, then so be it. His sole intention was to sink his claws in deep and hope to wring out the rot before they had the chance to threaten them any longer.

The snow falling to rest upon his back and head may have reminded him of the same feeling this time four seasons ago. He was much smaller then, and more frightened, too. Back then, it was only a distant dream to think that he would survive through the season, and even more foolish to think he'd go on long enough to feel the snow stick to his whiskers once more. Now, he did not ponder the possibility of whether there would be more snow, more seasons beneath his paws. He would not think, and there would be nothing for him to lose.

Another moment of stillness, and the cats erupt into fury. Foxglare charges at the closest loyalist and leaps with a snarl, intending to bowl them over and shove their head into the dirt beneath them. His dreams are far away from his mind.

His chest tightens as Sunstride answers Sootstar's challenge — WindClan will be born anew. Will he die here and now? Who would be the one to end his life? The world around Snakehiss erupts into a flurry of chaos, figures blurring into the background and enraged yowls ringing distantly in his ears. His heart fluttered frantically like a caged bird, blood roaring into his ears and making it difficult to focus on the present. He would die today. He would die fighting for Sootstar, wouldn't he?

Utterly caught off guard, Snakehiss is sent tumbling onto the ground, knocking back into reality with a thud. He huffed and puffed as he wriggled around, focusing in on who his attacker was — Milkthorn. Getting revenge for their apprenticehood spar, was he? "Get... off me, dirtbreath!" The deputy grunted as he struggled under the spotted tom's weight. He couldn't let himself die, not to the claws of this harebrain! Snakehiss had been taught better than this.

Channeling his energy, Snakehiss aimed to unleash his claws across Milkthorn's face. Whether they made purchase or not, he would attempt to use his lean, muscular legs to shove his attacker off. "You were always dung under my heel." The dark-pelted tom hissed, pinning his ears against the back of his skull. Snakehiss would gladly oblige to sinking his claws into his rival. Darting toward Milkthorn's side, the tom aimed to lunge forth, wrap his jaws around his hind leg, and thrash.

➴➴ Sootstar and her cronies have arrived. The smoky-furred leader demands that they flee or die, and Sunstride shouts out his response: they will not be leaving. Not until they leave for the stars. Then, in the span of only a few heartbeats, chaos descends upon the horseplace. Cats who were once clanmates have become enemies on this field, both sides intent on wiping out the other. The black-patched warrior stands frozen amidst the crashing of bodies and the spilling of blood—they cannot focus on any single foe, not when they see their clanmates fighting one another in every single corner of their vision. Sootstar and Sunstride are locked in brutal combat, and Houndthistle has thrown himself at one of his former clanmates.

Hazel eyes go wide with fear, with guilt. They search for Bluefrost and Thriftfeather in the crowd of enemies, but they hope that they won't find either their former apprentice or their friend. Gravelsnap's chest tightens. How could he have done this to them both? He'd left them, abandoned them… And now, even if they both manage to survive this battle, what will happen to Bluefrost and Thriftfeather? If Sootstar dies, will they both be killed along with her? The thought turns their stomach.

His heart roars with his father's strength in the most terrible of ways. The warrior he had once been is who bellows rage beneath the viper's nipping fangs, who whirls around with the ferocity of a bear, paw raised to slam back down upon the snow. He does not hit her then, but a cascade of white lifts into the air and comes slowly back down. By the time that the air before him clears, Soostar's claws are surging through the weakness. His body drops — he is himself again, a burst of flame in the snow, shielding his belly with his bulk so that her strike carves alongside his ribs. He had taught his young to shield themselves from those far greater, but that is not what Sunstride channels now. The viper beneath his paws would need to be pinned thoroughly if he had any intention to survive her.

Venom coursed through his clan and his own veins, a memory of youth so distant it hurts. Is this what had been seen in him, those many moons ago? Is this the warrior that his father had tried so desperately to keep him from becoming? Hungry for blood, for victory, for pride, without sparing even the scraps for those that had taken them there? He had loved glory as much as he had loved his father. And Ellisif — perhaps he had loved him enough to damn StarClan, too. Sootstar reminds him of what she had promised, and his gut twists with guilt. His own paws lash out towards her and retreat, using his own greater reach to hopefully keep her at hers. Scorchpaw leaps to join him, lunging for the leader's exposed side, and Sunstride allows his past to wash away. He joins in, attempting to follow the leader to the ground as well.

Sootstar is startled by the flash of orange and black, a pelt of youth. The daughter of not only one traitor, but two, she finds twisted joy knowing she's trick them all. Perhaps she still has- did Scorchstreak think twice yet about the exile of Badgermoon? Did she know it was all a lie? That he now wandered lonesomely in some forest out there… not believed by his kin nor a single clan-mate. If not in the heat of battle perhaps he would've laughed.

Scorchpaw plants their paws into Sootstar's flank, the two barrel over and Sootstar lets out a saliva filled hiss. As fangs latch into her chest Sootstar aims to slam a paw down against the apprentice's forehead, her claws hoping to tear away at flesh, make them bleed.. "Stupid apprentice, I'll kill you and your mother yet!"

Sunstride joins the apprentice, falling to the ground in a mess of fur, bites, scratches and kicks. Though she lands her own blow, fallen and pinned like this she is no match. She looks up just for a heartbeat and realizes much of her warriors are outnumbered- even losing their own battles. Against all odds, they were losing- with barn cats and exiles joining them in the fight she had underestimated their numbers.

"Get off of me, flea-pelt!"
The blue smoke snarls at the rosette tom, wiggling and thrashing against his grip and the apprentice's. Weasel-like and slippery if she manages to wiggle from under their weight she sprints from them, a yowl roaring from her throat. "WindClan, retreat!"

With one last glance at Sunstride, a look with promise she will return, she slithers underneath the snow-filled fence and flees for the moorland. She'll be back with the entire strength of her clan- they'll drive Sunstride and his mousers out of the horse place for good!

( ) She pulls her punches, sheathes her claws when she can. Fights for a mother gone mad, a tyrant she knows will leave nothing but bloodshed in her wake. Shrikethorn is not so naive to believe her mother is right, but like a starstruck kit, she'd still clung to the idea of Sootstar acknowledging her. What a fool she is, what a fool she always has been.

She should have left earlier. She should have stood with Sunstride, should have been there for the fight. This isn't the way things are meant to go, Shrikethorn standing cowardly behind a cause she does not believe in.

Sootstar calls a retreat. She could stay, she knows. Stay with the rebels, with her brother. She does not have to return with the moor queen. But there's a reason that Shrikethorn has not left yet -- she is no coward. She detests running away, detests sneaking around. She is not fond of subtlety. She's been waiting for some big chance, some grand moment of triumph... It seems now that it will never come. Perhaps she must make that chance herself.

Shrikethorn hesitates for a moment before she follows her mother's orders, and retreats.

For a split moment, he held regret coming at Snakehiss for the simple notion of revenge. There were others he would much rather dig his claws into-

he couldn't even say as a child he absolutely hated the guy, as a child there was a bit of him that looked up to Snakehiss as well, wanted to be his friend. but that was simply silly.

and it wouldn't ever happen, claws meeting face and a pained yowl escaping as he begun stumbling backwards, eyes squeezed tight before feeling hind legs push him further off.

he was stepping back trying to blink away the stinging and burning from claws across his muzzle and eye, realizing as words echoed in his ears that this was exactly why he did not pity or care for the male. the other warrior made their choice to join Sootstar, to value a monster for power.

all Snakehiss wanted was power. Just as he once did too, but he returned that life when he realized what power actually meant. he didn't need or want that. he wanted honour.

a blue eye opened wide, teeth gritting as jaws connected with his hind leg, and rearing back milkthorn attempted to slam paws down on the deputy, hoping to dig claws into his back and drag them across his shoulders.

He would hear Sootstars cry to retreat, and once Snakehiss would let go and pull away, a pained expression would cross the males face. "You're a fool, Snakehiss." He said between gritted teeth. "You're being used as a tool, she doesn't care about your life."

Why? He wasn't certain, but a part of him did indeed care that his clanmates weren't so torn from wicked and righteousness. Or whatever the hell was going on.

@SNAKEHISS

The young barncat had simply been resting in the loft when all hell broke loose at their doors. Springing upright she practically flew down to the barn's floors, curly coat spiking, and blue gaze electrified with fury. The clan cats had warned them all of this possibility and most had joined in on preparations for an assured retaliation. Once her pale gaze lands on the famed moor queen her heartbeat quickens as the sunny tom makes his stance clear. She was no battle-fed clan cat raised on righteousness and laws but her stubbornness was unmatched. Standing at her full height the moggy rushes into the fray slamming against the loyalist with little regard and forcibly shoving them from her home. They would not lay a claw on her pa' or the kit in their protection. Puff would make quick work of these damned pests. Claws flew past her face and nicked the she-cats left ear and a hiss of rage bubbled from within. Yowling she bowls the smaller Windclanner and jumps from their chest bunny kicking hay and dirt in their face as she went.

--

For awhile it feels like the madness will never end and just as her energy begins to wane the smokey leader screeches a retreat. In droves tails stream by her and she snaps her teeth at every passing one heatedly racing after the retreating cats with her own tail high and spittle flinging from her mouth. "DON'T YA'LL EVER COME BACK!" The screech is hearty and boisterous as a smile beams across her pale face. She doubted those wormhearted fools would dare make the mistake of coming around any time soon.
