private CHASE THE MORNING [✴︎] scorchpaw

Figfeather doesn’t know how, but today she winds up hunting at the side of a WindClan apprentice today. Honestly? She thought she’d never be able to get use to this, but which clan Scorchpaw belonged to was actually barely a thought in her mind.

Of course, she had not befriended everyone this journey. But through working so close together it felt like they had become their own… clan in a way? Albeit temporary, Figfeather has to keep reminding herself once they’re home it’s back to protecting their own borders from eachother. The way it was before, the way it will be again. At first this did not bother her, but now she finds that it does.

Still, there wasn’t time to think about that now. The group was hungry and she was not about to return to them empty pawed. Nearby there is rabbit sat next to a shrub. ”Psst. See that?” She bobs her head in the direction of the white-coated rabbit, it was difficult to spot at first in the thick snow.

”I’ll sneak up on it and chase it torwards you?” That way if it gave a good run, the WindClan apprentice could sprint after it. Figfeather could be fast but not nearly as fast as the moor cat.

Like Figfeather, Scorchpaw had never imagined herself able to hunt alongside any other Clan cat– least of all a SkyClanner. But the journey has nearly made her closer to SkyClan than she is to WindClan. Her thoughts flutter across rosy charcoal patterning and star-white cheeks, soft pink paws and softer tail; Scorchpaw has to reel herself back in before long. But it is not just Cherrypaw that she has gotten closer to. She thinks of Iciclefang at the bridge, and of Slate's powerful defense, and of Sharppaw's bravery in the tunnels, and of Chalk's assistance at the cliff face; truly she could not be here without them.

It is, then, not so strange to find herself hunting alongside Figfeather (though it is still strange, she thinks). The idea that they can hunt together now and scrap over prey later is, at least, one that puts her off some. It would be true of Figfeather in the same way it would be true of Cherrypaw and Iciclefang, and all the other cats on the journey, too. But her worry is cut short when the golden-furred molly whispers to her, indicating a familiar sight before them.

At least, it is somewhat familiar. This rabbit is decidedly different from WindClan's usual prey; most of the ones on the moors are a dusty coat of brown, with short-cropped fur. But this one is more plush, and stark-white to blend into the snow. Figfeather murmurs a plan, and the flame-streaked girl nods. Hopefully she wouldn't stick out too sorely against all this white. She doubts the rabbit would head straight for her bright-orange and black pelt, but if she's fast enough she could probably catch it regardless of the direction it scampers off in. Tufted tail flicking, Scorchpaw slowly gives the creature a wide berth, advancing her position so Figfeather can more easily chase the rabbit her way.

Once recieving a nod of understanding Figfeather allows Scorchpaw to position herself before trekking through the snow. Her belly is low to the ground and she does her best to stay downwind, like the bright colored apprentice her vibrant marmalade pelt would be easy to spot in the snow as well. She needed to stay out of the rabbit’s scent and sights until she was ready to give chace.

With some luck she manages to position herself behind it. If things went to plan when she sprinted forward the rabbit would bolt in Scorchpaw’s general direction, if not right torwards her. Peering up she gives the WindClan apprentice a nod to indicate she was about to make a move.

Then in a flash, she bolts forward on three legs. She allows her paws to thump loudly against the ground, kicking up snow in her wake as she charges right for the rabbit. Before she gets close it’s long ears detect her and it bolts just as planned, in the direction of Scorchpaw.

Until, it swerves.

Figfeather curses, ”Fox-dung, after it!” she yowls to her younger hunting companion. The striped she-cat does her best to maintain chase, but she’s not use to all this much snow or the rocky ground. Would Scorchpaw be able to pick up her slack?
