COUNTERFEIT | january patrols

It's time for her first action as WindClan's deputy. Scorchstorm approaches Tallrock's base with a mouse in her heart. She's consulted Scorchstar for advice on her first round of patrols; has pored over her decisions with as much mindfulness her fog-addled brain can muster. Still, she is uncertain — seared into her mind are the indifferent looks of her clanmates upon her promotion, and into them she reads a lack of support — but she marches onward, hardening her expression like a callus until it becomes leathery and unmoving.

"Patrols!" she barks, to-the-point as ever. The flame-pelted molly lashes her tail several times before she continues, allowing her clanmates to gather. "I will lead the border patrol to RiverClan. Tigersting, Daisyflame, and Mallowtail — you will come with me." Silkpaw and Bramblepaw have much to learn about the river and its dangers, including the Clan that lives across it. Her molten gaze sweeps her chosen patrolmates before flickering to a newly-named warrior.

"Sheepwish, you will lead the patrol to ShadowClan. You will take Featherspine, Sparrowbreeze, and Scorchstar. Splinterpaw, you will go with them, too." She wouldn't send her mother to RiverClan's border on purpose — Scorchstorm herself will shoulder that burden — but ShadowClan should be calmer, despite the strange episode they'd had recently. As for their patrol lead… some warriors may raise eyebrows at such a newly-named cat being in charge, but Scorchstorm preferred to think of it as a test of leadership — as did her mother, who offered her the advice.

Her tail twitches again as her dual-bronze eyes sweeps to another newly-named warrior. "Brackenscar, take Sootspot, Downyfur, and Cricketcry to ThunderClan's border." It's the last border patrol to assign — and the one where Sootspot can cause the least trouble, she hopes. Scorchstorm pierces the gray-furred warrior with her gaze, but says nothing of his potential conduct. Surely he knows to handle himself — but with Sootspot, there is little surety outside of his venomous demeanor.

There is a pause before she continues, lost in her own thoughts. Do you think I am worthy of this job? she wonders, but the you is ambiguous; it floats through the faces of her clanmates freely, fluidly. Some she is more sure of than others. Beyond a sharp glint in her eyes, she reveals little of her insecurity.

Scorchstorm continues, full-chested: "I'd like patrols to Horseplace and loner lands as well. DuskClan has been quiet since the blizzard, but it would be short-sighted to forget they are still out there." For a heartbeat, she can see Rumblerain — for a heartbeat, she can see Frostwind. One estranged, one dead, both lost to rogues in one way or another. Her jaw clenches before she continues. "Deerpetal, you will go to Horseplace with Periwinklebreeze, Buckfire, and Wraithwail. Bring Rowanpaw with you, too. Ask the barn cats if they have seen anything strange recently. And…." She trails off to find a familiar black-mottled pelt, "Sedgepounce, you will investigate the border near highstones for any signs of rogue activity. Bring Foxglare, Gravelsnap, and Milkthorn with you — Laurelpaw, too."

Finally, she searches the crowd for their medicine cats. Did they normally organize their own patrols? "Cottonsprig and Celandinepaw, bring Pinkshine and Daisywatcher with you to gather more herbs." Her ears twitch as she recalls the yelling match she'd overheard the other day. Were the medicine cats past that now? Her gaze lingers on Celandinepaw, expression indiscernible, before she finally concludes, "that will be all."

"On it." Celandinepaw's cheery voice resonated from the burgeoning crowd, like a blithesome breeze along the wind, dancing past the tragedies caught along the jagged snow. She glanced towards Scorchstorm first, catching along how the young sun danced upon flame-and-tinder body, rippling in splendor and might. She reminded her so starkly of her own mother, though she figured that such had been impounded by their shared name and hues. Still, the medicine cat apprentice trusted her to do well by the clan, even if she were just as no-nonsense and bestial as the current leader. Olivine eyes glanced at Cottonsprig next, though faltered to meet her mentor's gaze, shame as an amphoric sound that rang through her head. Are you still mad at me...? The words budded along her tongue, though did not lash past its ivory-set prison. She figured that they got along fine now, that it had been a rough patch in their friendship...

    — MEDICINAL EXPERTISE: Celandinepaw is the current medicine cat apprentice of Windclan. Although she is quite new to her position, she also has much expertise with treatment regarding infectious diseases and basic remedies. As for anything more complex... you're better off asking a more experienced medicine cat.

  • CELANDINEPAW & SHE / HER & 16 MOONS
—— Medicine Cat Apprentice of Windclan / Mentored by Cottonsprig
—— A shorthaired, wheat-yellow spotted tabby with yellowish-green eyes. Somewhat pudgy, though lean and able to hold her ground in the wild. Broad-shouldered and tall compared to her smaller clanmates, she stands out through a Windclan crowd.
—— Outgoing and terribly saccharine, she is a friendly and affable face in Windclan. Though ditzy and cowardly, she tries her best to help her clan as one of their healers. She is prone to outbursts when spurned or stressed. She also tends to follow her own personal code and will often go for a safe, painless option.

Silkpaw's tail flicks nervously behind her as she listens intently to Scorchstorm's commands, her paws itching with anticipation. This was it, her first patrol! She'd been preparing for this moment ever since she could remember, dreaming of the day when she would be entrusted with the responsibility of patrolling the borders of WindClan. But now, as the moment approached, she felt a twinge of uncertainty.

When her new mentor announces that they'll be leading the patrol to RiverClan, Silkpaw straightens, her head held high despite the flutter in her chest. That means she and Bramblepaw will be going with her! She casts a nod to her fellow apprentice, a bright smile on her face that slightly betrays her nerves. The idea of patrolling the RiverClan border with a peer brings a small comfort - at least she won't be alone as the only apprentice.

She glances around, taking in her clanmates, some confident and seasoned, others like her, still learning. Despite her usual tendency to keep up appearances, to look like she belonged in the middle of a gathered crowd of warriors, Silkpaw feels small for a heartbeat, unsure of her place. Snap out of it! This is your chance to prove yourself! With a deep breath, she straightens her posture, her feathery tail flicking again with determination. She looks up at Scorchstorm and offers a respectful dip of her head. "I'm ready!" She trills excitedly.

The call for patrols is the first time she's without a mentor, it is also the first time that Scorchstorm is the one at the helm. Usually her mother does this, though their meow has a similar enough cadence that they're sure she could hear the same cat if she closed their eyes. Just because it's someone new doesn't mean that Brackenscar won't be dutiful enough, a begruding respect. Something that the deputy will be afforded through much restraint, even then it will never feel like the respect the others will give her. Why spoil the deputy in that regard? Above all else they still carry their opinions with honour, habouring belief that just the title deputy doesn't give her total respect. That at least much be earned from the wildfire of a warrior. They settle on their haunches, trying to gain a read on the rather expressionless cat commanding them.

Her interest is caught from the start, Tigersting being sent out on a patrol lead by the midnight and fire she-cat. They have the upmost confidence in the tabby but there is a lingering concern about her being so close to the gorge with her vision. Whatever, they're not the one handing out patrols so they're certain that Scorchstorm has a good enough head on her shoulders to know where or where not to send them. Sheepwish is sent off as a leader, they don't mean to come across too judgemental but that is rather surprising that he would be given a patrol to ShadowClan of all places. Then again she is a rather agreeable cat... So it is probably for the best.

In the same regard their own name being called upon to lead is surprising, there is a split moment where crescent highlighted eyes widen a fraction. Then falling to the ever impartial expression, ThunderClan huh. That should be fine, she's with warriors that she respects (well, save for Cricketcry). It would be nice to go that way, see how the clan fares and potentially see how Orangepaw is. Scorchstorm is given a sharp nod, there is an unspoken expectation given and she would not let her down even if she isn't sure how they feel about her new position.

༄༄ The leader is attentive as their daughter calls for patrol assignments, looking so much like Badgermoon as she gives orders to the clan. The sight only reinforces Scorchstar's belief that she was the best choice for the position; none could project the same confidence that she does as she puts together a number of acceptable patrol groups. Scorchstorm appoints the newly-named Sheepwish as lead for a patrol to ShadowClan's border, earning a nod of approval and a slow, purposeful blink. Testing the clan's newest warriors is a good idea; if they cannot handle the soft sort of leadership that comes with leading a patrol, then how can they be trusted with the other responsibilities of fully-grown warriors? Sheepwish will handle it well, they suspect, though the black-pointed feline will surely handle it in his own strange way. Scorchstar's tail flickers and they look to the new Warrior, expectant. What will Sheepwish do now?

The brisk morning is met with Sedgepounce's misty breath wisping through the air, his puffed-up pelt warding away the chill as he sits there, eyes trained pensively on Scorchstorm. Her face is hard, statue-stark, but she musters some soldier-like authority from beneath Tallrock's shadow. She probably feels more nervous than she looks. Probably feels more...lots of things. Turmoil and grief—he can only imagine the tumultuous storm that rages beneath her stony exterior. As she doles out patrols, Sedgepounce watches on, feeling hopeless to help.

Eventually his name his called. Highstones sours his mood, but Foxglare lifts it. He turns to his friend with a small, slow-thawing smile. "Hmm...dawn patrol, you think?" he hums. They might find some small evidence of rogues at the border near dusk, so maybe by morning they can ward them off to begin with.

There must be a reason she's making all the young warriors lead the patrols. Is it to prove that her own youth isn't a burden? The deputy is older than them, sure, but not by much. This is a far cry from the days of Sunstar and Scorchstreak, where she felt like every member of the council had seasons upon seasons on her, and she could put her trust in confidence backed by experience. Not that they don't trust her, but... they don't. Not really. Then again, they could never trust Sunstar either, and they'd been proven right.

Despite the doubts tingling in the back of their mind, they pad up to Brackenscar with a smile. "I guess we are working together," they purr, hoping she gets the reference. "Heatherpaw and I are ready when you are," they add, dipping their head.
