FEELS LIKE SUMMER — camping/lake day human au

Nikolai doesn't even know how he'd been dragged on this giant group camping trip. His brother had convinced him to go, though he was surprised that he actually sucked it up and committed to the day instead of flaking off last minute. He was a city boy through and through; he lived in a nice apartment, had a nice car, enjoyed civilization and modern amenities. He had been on a camping trip maybe once or twice as a kid and had complained the entire time; it seemed like nothing much had changed in the past twenty-something years.

"God- Fucking- Ugh!" Nik exclaimed as he dropped the tent poles he had been fiddling with for the past few minutes. While others took to standing around the campfire chatting and enjoying the late afternoon sun, or even dunking themselves into the lake just steps away from the campsite, Nikolai was intent on setting up his shelter so that he could escape from everyone. He had been so confident that he could set up his tent by himself, though he hadn't gotten far with the task.

"This is why I never go camping." He verbally vents his frustrations, balling his fists tightly as he refrained from slamming them onto the wooden bench ( or putting them through the bench ).

// your character is free to be in the water or at the campsite or just doing w/e tbh

"So do I get to help you now or are you gonna start sneezing on me?" Reyna raises an eyebrow, arms folding as she surveys Nikolai's work. She doesn't look directly at him as she does so, leaning her weight on one leg. It's not bad- she's definitely seen worse, and she's definitely done worse on camping trips as a kid. Emphasis, however, on as a kid. They're grown adults now, and she knows Nikolai has been camping before. She also knows that her longtime friend is allergic to accepting help on things; his pride has always been one of his greatest flaws, and his time in the city hasn't helped his muscle memory on the matter.

In the background, her own assembled tent sits staunchly against the beautiful blue sky, completed with help from her kids. An unspoken, and also perhaps unintentional, taunt on both his skill and his pride.

Fletcher was squatting by the lakeside, wings slightly flared for balance as they gazed down into the gently lapping waters. It was no secret that they felt far more at home away from the bustling human population, out in sprawling nature where trees and wildlife thrived. It brought them comfort, and they were sure it always would. They weren't sure that they would ever understand the human need for towering skyscrapers and miles of concrete, or beeping cars and shouting and―

Just up the hill, Nikolai spat a curse that made the avian jolt and nearly topple from their careful position, hand thrust down to the earth and half-spread wings doing a small flap. The appendages drew themselves in, pressed tightly to their back and feathers ruffling. Fletcher twisted around to peer back at him. He looked frustrated, about ready to hurl something, and they belatedly realized the tent was the source.

Rising to their feet, they hopped a step back from the water's edge before turning and stepping lightly up the slope, hands buried in the hem of their slightly too-big shirt and wringing it. Gray eyes warily flickered from the tall man to the sad pile of sticks and fabric as they stopped a few paces from Reyna's shoulder.

For a moment, Fletcher didn't speak, instead pointing at one of the support sticks that poked out from the dejected tent-to-be. "That one doesn't go there, it's too big," they said softly.

[ Something so magic about you ]

Camping was something that one had to enjoy, or rather the outdoors. It was clearly easier to tell who enjoyed biting insects and the blistering heat, and who would rather remain within the safety confines of a air conditioned building and all the bug repellent. Snorting faintly at the sounds of what could be described as well controlled rage quitting at failing to set up a tent. It was a frustrating ordeal, but it took patience.

As for the multicolored haired woman unfurled her sleeping back, she camped light. Ultra light, more of a hikers ambitions than a true camper thing. Her campsite really was a tarp, mat with whatever else was needed for this. She jumped at the chance at this, it was good to get out of the city, away from the hustle and bustle.

Of course she was overhearing what Reyna had said, and frowned at thought of someone coming into a place that would make their health worse. Why people liked to torture themselves was beyond her. It was strange thing, and it didn't make any sense to her.

"I do hope that you have meds for that, we don't want you sneezing all over the place. Summer colds or allergies are nasty in this heat."

"Hey! You're not supposed to say that word," Cheryl calls from her spot near Reyna's tent. The girl actually couldn't care less about what came out of people's mouths, but she wouldn't pass up an opportunity to needle Nikolai about something. She privately agrees with his sentiments, however; she doesn't particularly enjoy the "great outdoors" either. She'd helped pitch the tent, but she isn't going to scuff up her newest manicure carrying twigs for the fire or digging up bugs. She'd painted her nails herself this time! Cher absentmindedly examines them once more. The red seemed glossy and brilliant in the sunlight, but some of the edges were already flaking off. Sweat lightly prickles the back of her neck, and she gives her braid a small tug out of the way.

Voices of reason converge on Nikolai, but Cher is content to stay out of it, save for her one comment. She's surprised Mama didn't call him out over that either, but then again, they were both adults. Maybe it was an Adult Thing. "I'm bored," she says to the nearest child. She doesn't have any ideas for how to alleviate the boredom, but maybe someone else does, and then she could shoot down their inevitably dirty and icky idea.

Kaiden sits not far from the rest of the camping party, back turned to the blue sky as his hand ruffles through the fur of a snowy-colored retriever. The medical student found himself all too happy to sit and listen to the banter back and forth, a small smile on his freckled face. His slouched form did nothing to hide the bulking body he had, too. Black hair, bangs swept into his face messily to cover the milky whites of his eyes. He rises steadily, back straightening and hand reaching for his white cane before he saunters over with a grunt.

"Don't suppose we can start makin' something to eat, can we?" He asks with a sheepish smile, a hand gripping the handle of Poki's harness before he finally lets go in favor of reaching down to try and find the cast-iron griddle he'd brought with them. "I've got some allergy medication in my bag if you need it, sir." He offers politely, dipping his head to the side.
