camp FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES 𓆞 fishing net

-ˋˏ ༻✧༺ ˎˊ- something strange had washed partially onto the shallows along the edge of riverclan's camp. a waterlogged snake, perhaps, but it didn't move like one she's seen. it didn't move at all, matter of fact. a lone tendril on the sand, whatever it was attached to hidden amongst the current.

carawaypaw glances around, had anyone else noticed this yet? all she saw were cats busying themselves, chatting, or otherwise not interested in whatever this was. she creeps forward to investigate upon wary paws.

bristles tickle her nose as she sniffs the thing, eyes tearing as the apprentice withholds a sneeze. it just smelled like water. heavy and fully saturated, when a dark paw flicks the tendril off the ground it lands with a soggy thud. the sound inspired something under the surface, the water churns rapidly, fins surface periodically as the trapped fish thrash against each other and the rope. was this weird thing full of prey? surely she wouldn't be so lucky.

there was no harm in finding out, however. the bristles dig into her maw and scrape against her tongue as she wraps her teeth around the rope, but no matter how hard she pulls there is not enough strength in her body to pull the net from the river. she drops the rope after a few tries, glancing around and landing on her nearest clanmate. "hey! help me out with this," she calls out with a slight grin, waving a paw over the rope.

I HEARD, I HEARD ACROSS THE MOONLIT SEA — Her jaws part to let out a yawn though the usual busy and chatter of her clanmates make her ears flick with disinterest, the sound of Carawaypaw's voice is enough for her to turn her mismatched eyes in her direction. The molly telling her to help out with something and she hesitantly approaches to see it an odd thing though her head tilts to the side when she realizes some thrashing fish. Their silver scales shining under the sunlight but the sides of her mouth pull downwards in a frown and her ears lay flat against her head. She doubts that its wise to trust such a thing yet the chance of having prey for the queens and everyone else in the clan is enough to pique her interest. "I hope you know what you're doing..." Beepaw mumbles under her breath to the other only to lean forward to hold the net in her jaws, her face contorting with disgust at the feeling on her gums and mouth.

"Is this awful." The older apprentice states but still keeps her jaws wrapped around it so that she can help pull it out even if she knows that just the two of them might not be capable enough. She glances over her shoulder briefly to see if anyone had saw the two of them struggling and if she caught the gaze of someone, she uses her feathery tail to motion for them to help.

𓆝 . ° ✦ As stepped from the last stepping stone into camp, Mosspool's ear flicked as she heard some commotion in the nearby river. Glancing over, all she could do was blink as she noticed how the surface of the water churned unnaturally. Two apprentices were clustered nearby, struggling against something unseen with all their might. Her eyes narrowed in instant suspicion. Apprentices had a habit of making mischief, and she had a habit for putting an end to it. She made a beeline toward them.

"What are the two of you-" Mosspool stopped as she caught sight of what they had between their jaws. "Oh. Hm." A weird, fibrous thing that stretched out into the water and wound its way around a whole bundle of fish, who struggled desperately against it. While she was not altogether certain what was trapping them (was it some sort of plant perhaps?) the clan could use all that prey. If they could drag the strange thing to the shore, it would mean a feast for the clan. Without another word, she stepped up beside Carawaypaw and Beepaw, clamping her jaws around the net and lending her strength to their pulling.

    MOSSPOOL — SHE/HER ・ 17 MOONS ・ WARRIOR of RIVERCLAN ・ PENNED BY @empyrean !
Longhair black tabby with deep green eyes. Mosspaw is a very tall molly, standing a head above most cats her age. She has a slim, willowy physique with subtle musculature built up from a lifetime of constant training that lends itself well to swimming and running. Long, thick brown fur falls over her form with tabby patterning across it. Her eyes are a vibrant green, and shine with a bright intelligence and confidence.

The gathering of three other cats catch her attention, and they seemed to be gathered around an object trapping the fish inside. A frown creases her soft features as she watches the fish trash helplessly in their trap which seemed twoleg made, as she's never seem plantlife or wildlife similar to it. The rest seem all eager to get it on shore but she can't help but get an uneasy feeling in her stomach: what if whatever trapped this was mad their prey was gone? If it could do this, then who knows what it would do if it found out about them? " Let's be quick... who knows whatever did this will be coming back soon. "

Troutsnout would grip the net along with the other three and attempt to drag it onto the shore with them. She had a similar thought to Mosspool, if she could get this home to Riverclan without anything catching them- they wouldn't need to worry about prey for a couple of days. The female knew Robinheart was having it rough after Brookstorm's death and maybe some gifts or a feast would cheer her up. The rest of the queens, kits or the elders wouldn't have to wait until they got home with food and could just feast on these fish until it was all gone.

Eveningkit watches, even when Carawaypaw believes there are no eyes on her. It's unusual for her to be this hidden, sprawled out under the shade of a tree by the very edge of camp, only speaking with her gaze instead of her voice. A blessing for few. A curse for her. She feels like talking, but she doesn't find it in herself to come up with a joke or a call to action.

Thankfully, Carawaypaw does it for her. Eveningkit pushes herself to her feet - really pushes, instead of rising gracefully or hopping straight into the air.

She doesn't jump in to help. Beepaw, Mosspool and Troutsnout come to Carawaypaw's help, and surely there is enough strength between the four of them to lift the soggy material onto shore. For the first time in her life, Eveningkit is painfully aware of her short-comings. If big and powerful Smokestar can succumb to a pile of rocks, then what is she? Just a bundle of fluff, still softened by kitten fur, limbs slender with no real power to them. She'd just get in the way.

"Does this happen often?" she feels the need to ask despite knowing the answer. Of course not. RiverClan would seldom need to worry about filling their bellies if the very streams themselves offered fish on a silver platter... or in a snake-like thing, now.

Of all the kits in the nursery, Graykit considers Eveningkit to be his best friend, wherever she goes, it is not uncommon to find him nearby. But today, he had chosen to lounge in the sun while Eveningkit had chosen to lounge in the shade where it was cool. It was getting hotter now, the days starting to get less rainy and the sun starting to show it's face more and more. It would get unbearable soon, he hears the adults say. But that's what the river was for, apparently. He is still uncertain on the whole thing, but he supposes he would come to find out what's so great about swimming and fishing in time.

At first, he merely watches Carawaypaw with curiousity shining in dull green eyes. What in the world was she trying to pull some weird reeds out of the river for? And then he sees it, the shimmer of scales, the large ammount of fish that struggle and thrash against the netting. "Whoa, that's a lot of fish" he observes, but like Eveningkit he makes no move to help. He would only get in the way, after all. Beepaw, Mosspool, and Troutsnout should be more than enough in terms of strength, though Troutsnout does make an observation that sparks worry in his chest. "What kinda animal catches fish like this?" He finds himself asking.

MAYBE I'D BE A SAINT IF I WEREN'T ————————————

Stranger and stranger things are happening in Riverclan, and though Snakeblink knows who to blame — twolegs — he is still dissatisfied with the fact that he doesn’t know what to blame them for. What even is this contraption keeping the fish trapped? What is going on in these strangely-shaped skulls of theirs?

”Twolegs,” he tells Graykit, sniffing at the strange object and the fish writhing within. ”And I would not call this usual, no, although it certainly is… ingenious.”

The fish’s efforts to wrench themselves free of this woven prison are not making the mollies’ attempts at dragging it out of the water any easier, though they are strong enough to make up for it. Still, Snakeblink would rather help than stand there and stare, especially since Mosspool holds enough distaste for him as it is without adding laziness to his list of sins. Dipping his paws in the water, he would attempt to grab a different part of the twoleg trap in his mouth and pull it out, making the endeavor hopefully a little easier — though he knows for a fact he will get slapped in the eye by a struggling fish before this is done...

The young warrior finds himself padding over to the small group of cats, his ears pricked up at the tiny commotion. He was about to head out of camp with Pebblepaw, but the curiosity got the better of him. Why are there so many of his clanmates, ranging from warriors to kits, gathered at the river in camp? I promise we'll head out soon, He thinks to himself as he makes his way over, and his olive green eyes fall on the woven contraption.

He blinks with confusion at the sight.... so much fish are trapped in the strange rope. They struggle and struggle to find a way to escape, but the net is woven to perfection, not even the tiniest fish can slip through it. "....H-how strange," He comments, looking down at all the fish that are prisoned inside it. Twolegs must be responsible for this strange net. RiverClanners don't need a woven net to catch their prey, they use their fangs and claws!

But if they can successfully drag this out of the river, and then find a way to tear the rope, the clan will be fed for days. "Let's h-help them," He says to his apprentice, with a slight nod of his head. It looks pretty heavy.... all that fish in one place must weigh a lot— they can use all the help they can get. He sinks his fangs into the net and pulls alongside his clanmates, attempting to drag it out of the river.

She recognizes the fibrous mesh encasing the fish instantly, and her blue eyes crust over with ice. She remembers the stitches digging into her flesh, hindering her movements, Smokestar’s orange gaze piercing her pelt as he instructed her to stay still, his teeth in the net’s material, struggling to free her. She pads up behind Eveningkit and Graykit, struggling to keep the fur on her shoulders flat. “A Twoleg trap of sorts,” she murmurs to the gathered cats. “I was caught in one on my first training session with Smokestar. He had to tear the material to get me out. It’s tough, tougher than any vine.” She watches the warriors slip into the water to wrangle the bulk forward.

Snakeblink observes it’s ingenuity, and she cannot agree. She thinks of Ashpaw, struggling and squealing as her paw was clamped by metal fangs. She thinks of Cicadastar, suspended and struck through, blood soaking his paws and splashing into her eyes. “It’s dangerous. I don’t like that it’s come this close to our camp,” she murmurs, wrapping her tail around Graykit protectively.

Life had grown strange since the twolegs started becoming more frequent in their territory. New smells. New sights. New fears. She'd grown more cautious this moon, not as eager to venture into the territory for training as she usually was. Turtlepaw would go if pushed - always eager for new adventures - but the sound of twoleg chatter set her skin on edge.

She peeked from behind her mentor and shivered at Troutsnout's warning that the twoleg responsible may show their foreign, flat face. Snakeblink moved away to help pull the weird vines from the water and Turtlepaw followed lose behind. She sniffed the net cautiously and made a loud gagging noise. "Oh yuck! It smells like old fish slime!" It was like she could smell every fish ever caught in the waterlogged set of vines. Despite the smell, she clamped her jaws in the material and pulled her best. Her paws skidded in the damp riverbank and she grunted with effort next to Snakeblink.
