Even as summer reached its conclusion, warmth still blanketed the land and flora flourished. The sun was nearing its peak now, a comfortable breeze ruffling their feathers and sunlight dancing across the forest floor.

Their friends would show up soon, they were sure. Berries would be gathered to share, fun would be had. Fletcher couldn't carry much more than a single berry, so they had opted to ask everyone to meet beneath the oran berry tree that seemed to never run out. It was their favorite. The tree was tall, recognizable by many, and the berries were delicious to boot!

The Fletchling had plucked a few from their stems, sending them to the forest floor below while they waited, wings spread for balance. They were leaning forward on a branch now, eyes locked on the next one they wanted to bring down. One solid Peck, and down it went.

Bonk!

Rather than land softly in the grass, there was an affronted yelp that made Fletcher jolt, head swiveling to peer downward. One of their friends was here! Had they hit them with the berry? "Sorry! Sorry!" they chittered apologetically, wings fluttering as they lowered themself from the tree. "Did that hurt?"

"Oof," Cheri groans, swaying back a few pawsteps. The berry tumbles another few paw-lengths away from her, leaving in its wake a berry-sized throb beneath her bangs. The Vulpix glares upwards, fire gathering angrily between her jaws. She'd just learned Ember, and she wasn't afraid to use it! Thankfully, the apologetic chatter of Fletcher soon winds its way down the branches and into her ears, and the attack dies down. "Yeah," she replies, stubbornly clinging to the last of her hurt. She gives her bangs a few more swipes and pats to make sure they're in place; she'd loathe to have them ruined on such a nice day.

It was hard to stay mad at them for long though, especially with the others trickling into the space below the great Oran tree too. She's just about to hold up the bushel of Cheri berries in her mouth when she realizes they aren't there anymore―she must've burnt through the branch! Panic sweeps through her, but the feeling quickly abates when she finds them at her paws, unharmed save for the part she'd burned. "Look!" she exclaims, puffing out her chest and gesturing to the berries with a paw. "I found all of these." It'd be too much of a cliche for Cheri's namesake to also be her favorite food, but what could she say? The spicy-sweet of a Cheri berry had no equal.

He watched the others trickle through, leaning against the Oran berry tree with a wrinkle of his muzzle, canines flashing against dark lips. He was beginnin’ to wonder if appearing was worth the mess that was sure to happen—Spoke too soon. Youkai watched with an unimpressed raise of his brow at the half-burnt branch. “Better be more careful, kid. Don’t need the entire forest burnin’ down.” He commented, tone guttural, reverberating deep within his throat.

The golden shields covering his front glimmered beneath the sunlight, urging him to push further beneath the grooves of the Oran berry tree, darkened gaze narrowing beneath his helmet. He’d rather be anywhere else, but something about letting the chatter lull him into a false sense of peace was more appealing than letting his paws take him wherever preferably somewhere without anyone, but Youkai wasn’t too keen that would have worked.

Blinking, the Zamazenta shifted, letting his side rub against the trunk to nudge one of the Oran berries closer with a crinkled brow, observing the blue-colored berry before nudging off to whoever was closest to him with his nose. He didn’t bother looking in their direction, keeping his helm parallel to the trunk, expression deadpan.

⭒✧ A stale crumble, ceramic-like, heralded the Sigilyph's arrival. Bobbing the same circuit he frequented day in and day out, Chalk was pleased to see familiar shapes beneath the shade of the oran tree. Tattered wings flush with polished colour rocked without effort, the psychic nature of his flight bringing the pokemon to the others smoothly.

Fletcher and Cheri had gathered a significant pile of berries, their blue and red surfaces bright amongst the sun-soft grass. The exchange between the smaller pair held his attention until the deep growl of Youkai punctuated its end. 'Better be more careful, kid. Don’t need the entire forest burnin’ down.' "She's managed so far." The interjection was mild and lacked bite. Then, tasselled tail brushing the air above the berries, the pokemon added "Good find."

The Zamazenta's broad head dipped beneath the shadow, light spinning from the metallic surface. Chalk's glassy eye was drawn to him, and he was met with a berry nudged in his direction. "Hm?" The question bubbled up in a dull jingle. Aglow with the pink of Psychic, the oran berry rose to the Sigilyph's height. After a moment of inspection, the fruit was flung in an arc, the unnatural propulsion fading on its fall. "Catch."

Their eyes swam with worry tinged with remorse, but... at least Cheri seemed to be okay. Her fur seemed a little disheveled from it, but nothing a few swipes of her paw couldn't fix. Fletcher straightened up, relieved.

It was then the Vulpix seemed to panic, if only briefly, eyes searching wildly. Both of them looked to the discarded berries on the floor. Look, the Fire-type exclaimed, and the Fletchling brightened. "Cheri berries! That's a really great find!" They looked ripe and delicious. "Now we have two berry types!"

Sure enough, one by one their friends began to filter into the clearing, starting with the hulking Zamazenta, Youkai, who gruffly warned the young Vulpix of her flames. They had to crane their neck to look up at him, but they didn't mind. "It'll be okay, I'm sure! The river's nearby if we need it." They themself knew Ember as well. It wasn't a move that easily got out of control... from an accident, at least.

She's managed so far, came a familiar voice, and in floated Chalk. "Chalk!" they greeted gleefully. "You made it!" The more the merrier, and they were getting excited about the day ahead.

They had just turned back to Cheri, beak parted to ask a question when an oran berry fell at their feet, the bird fluttering backward with a squeak. Chalk had said catch, they realized belatedly. "Oh- um- thank you," they stammered after a moment. Catch wasn't their strength. Even so, they took the opportunity to tuck in.

Fletcher looked back up to Cheri to try a second time. "So you're learning Ember? Is that what that was? That's new! Can I see?"

The Bisharp never quite knew if he counted as a friend amidst the berry groves. It was coveted land, one that the Pawniards he knew would fight for until the very armour atop their head and arms chipped away. Still, having found time away from his gang, the red pokemon moved forward, his steps accentuated by the light clinks of a chipped blade shard caught between his ribcage blades. Konstantin arrived at the first sound of conversation, triangular eyes shifting ever so slightly into disgust at the mention of fire-type moves. Trying to remedy his own discomfort, he pointed the tip of his bladed head towards the treeline and clanged his feet in its direction. A side-eyed glance was offered to the remnants of charred berry near Cheri, a 'hmph' sound escaping the bipedal creature. Cooking with fire only seemed to waste time, the very practice was not something his species could ever perform. Fire melted through his steel far easier than Konstantin would ever like to admit, and never before had he crossed blades with a Pawniard, Bisharp, or even Kingambit that had such power over the elements. His arm coated in a flash of light, the Bisharp thrust the appendage upwards, the glow leaving his arm and severing through the branch of the oran tree.

With a rustle of protesting leaves, the branch crumpled to the floor and Konstantin kneeled before it to inspect the berries. A small hand-picked one up and spun it around and, content with the sapphire blue hues, threw the food into his mouth. The conversation continued around the living weapon, excitement between friends, and cautions from acquaintances. Then, Fletcher mentioned the Vulpix's ember once more. Without turning around, the Bisharp stated, "No more fire." He did not need to explain to his pack why he had returned with soot and ash upon his flame-sensitive brows. Tilting his head to the side, Konstantin watched the Pokemon present. "I see no water types here should things go wrong." With such a young Vulpix being asked to show off her skills, Konnie didn't doubt that something was bound to go very, very wrong. No amount of Digging could smother the flames should they find a presence in the forest.
