camp I'LL DO 25 TO LIFE ♡ RETURN

Mirepurr is no more.

It is Mirestar who traverses the no-man's land with hesitant pawsteps.

The trek back home is... unsettling, to say the least. They imagine Smogstar with radiant energy and respectful quiet. He must have been excited... and Mirestar would lie if they claimed they do not feel an inkling of it too, but there is a heavy mix of shame and concern that does not allow them to be too joyous, that forces them into bitter contentment.

StarClan had welcomed Mirestar, even if some of the cats who greeted them had clearly not expected a new ShadowClan leader so soon. They cannot blame any of them; but they do not feel comforted by Stumpyspot calling their previous supervisor Smogmaw, the confirmation of his unknown whereabouts, the reveal by Chilledstar themself that Mirestar would not receive a ninth life. Eight, only — guilt strikes them when they think of it that way, for each and every warrior has only one to give, but it is a clear division between them and the other rightful leaders.

They are different from their peers again.

"We're back," they announce after emerging from the tunnel to the camp; only after a sharp intake of breath and an attempt to soothe their own nerves. It is... odd, to glance at their Clanmates now.

This, all this- it is theirs now, in more ways than one, in a way they've never experienced before.

Mirestar takes another moment to collect themself. "StarClan has spoken... they've gifted me with more lives, and they want me to continue leading ShadowClan." They do not mention how many lives; and through sheer luck, they are saved from having to unveil any details, courtesy of meetings with StarClan being sacred and private.

They can only hope that they will accept them in Smogstar's stead.

"Everything is in order, I assume?"

Set after this thread!
The case of Mirestar receiving eight lives instead of nine is not common knowledge as of this moment. :]

Mirestar.

Ferndance had thought the title would inspire hope. In conversation with them, she had been sincere in the belief that the chimera was the best hope that ShadowClan had, that they had enough empathy and didn't care about the rules just enough to give the marsh a chance of surviving in a world built on chaos. Ferndance wanted to work hard for them.

But... StarClan granting nine lives meant that Smogstar was truly gone... never to return, if she considered what happened to other leaders of ShadowClan.

It was like grieving over again and as she stared the other down, she had to remember to pick her head up and hold it high. 'This is good... this is what I've said the whole time...' She had to remind herself, and yet, in the pursuit of progress, they had left behind the one who had held up that ladder for them to begin with. Had Smogstar not considered himself worthy to follow them up it? Or... had he truly allowed himself to reunite with Halfshade? Claws unsheathed as she came to a conclusion only recently overruled with Splashdance: it still wasn't grief, it was anxiety about what she did not know.

A smile cracked upon her muzzle, her tail swaying back and forth. If her daughter could be found then surely Smogstar would be at some point - he certainly smelled enough to leave a trail (an ear twitched in amusement, she was certain he'd agree with her teasing). For now, she would have to appreciate what she had in the present. "No deaths or untimely disappearances..." she mewed gently, tilting her head to one side. Eyes blinked mischievously. "Unless you count my urge to sniff butts... I don't know where that's gone... you didn't happen to find it on your way home... did you?"

Whether or not she knows it, whether or not she'll ever admit it, Gigglepaw did pray that Mirepurr wouldn't return - at least not with a changed name, not a surefire sign that Smogstar was gone for good. She meant the deputy no ill-will, but losing Smogstar... that had done something irreparable to Gigglepaw that she wasn't ready to address, even if she and Smogstar had never been close. She'd admired him for so long, and he'd been leader for such a short time - it just wasn't fair, to Gigglepaw.

But Mirepurr does return - and they return Mirestar, and although a frown slips onto Gigglepaw's maw she just as quickly banishes it and trots out of her den aside her mom, donning a large smile that seemed as authentic as any of hers were. "Mirestar! Wow, you've got all the lives of a leader now, huh? That must be exciting. Are you excited?" Gigglepaw asked, her barrage of questions accented with a small hop in her step.

Time ticks by, ShadowClan continues in Mirepurr's absence. It's... quiet while their deputy - leader? - is gone, which is both a good thing, and a bad thing. Good, because that means there's no trouble, bad because that's boring. Still, when the entrance rustles, and Mirepurr returns with, presumably, nine lives and a new name.

"Welcome back, welcome back!" She greets, padding right up to her leader with a grin. She wants to ask how it went, what happened, but a leader ceremony is one shrouded in purposeful mystery. So, instead, she says, grinning with a glance at Ferndance, "we certainly haven't missed that urge, hopefully Mirestar left it behind!"

There is an ugliness within Halfsun when Mirepurr finally returns to camp and speak those vile awful words to the clan. Lives. Plural. She wants to laugh in their new leaders face because surely this was some sort of sick joke right? Surely the universe was pulling some kind of twisted prank on her? Mirestar's vagueness is a different kind of frustrating because Halfsun knows it's not their choice to do so, not really, StarClan swears them to be secretive of what goes on in those moonlit meetings, after all. But still, she begrudges them for it all the same.

For a long moment she is stunned into silence. Ferndance's lukewarm attempt at levity breezing past her ears like a leaf-bare wind. Gigglepaw acts like it's the best thing in the world. Her father is gone, dead it seems, and Gigglepaw is asking if Mirepurr is excited of all things. Her paws curl into the soft earth as she fights the urge to cuff the apprentice on the side of the head. And then Shalestorm is speaking, welcoming their leader back with a warmth that only serves to make Halfsun feel so incredibly stupid. Was no one else upset over this? Had the world just moved past her father's presence that quickly? She wants to scream, to cry out, anything at all but instead she just crouches there in the mud like an idiot, mismatched blue eyes staring blankly ahead.

"Congrats Mirestar" she says, her voice dull. She doesn't deign to look in their direction when she speaks.

HALFSUN SHADOWCLAN WARRIOR; SHE / HER ; SISTER TO APPLEJAW, ASHENFALL, SWANSONG, GARLICHEART, AND LAURELGRIN
A tall and well-toned she cat with a long half-and half pelt, one side being a dark blue tabby and the other a bright cream, split by a pool of white at her center and travelling up her face like flames she is fire and ice simultaneously swirling into one. Her eyes are a mismatched shade of blue, with one being bright like the daytime sky and the other dark like the depths of the river.
Difficult in battle + a skilled fighter

It should come as no surprise that the thing to draw Mistmoth from her quiet drifting is the return of her sibling, now glimmering with all the blessings from above. It certainly doesn't surprise the lilac tortoiseshell herself; she's never excelled at doing things for herself. But the chatter radiating from the tunnel to camp rouses her interest, and that it carries the name Mirestar quickly kicks her intrigue out of its nest to land on its paws. She isn't too sure where she's walking from, truth be told, too focused on her destination. Her sibling has returned.

(The chance that they wouldn't return had only been slim, but it being disproven lifts an increment of stress from the warrior's shoulder nonetheless. They returned with the lives of a leader, safer than ever. It's enough to let a smile flutter into place on her maw.)

"Mirestar," she echoes, not as energetic as Gigglepaw, nor as blunted as Halfsun's tone. Starclan wants Mirestar to continue leading. Despite herself and in spite of the tragedy necessary for such a change, Mistmoth feels... happy might be a stretch, but proud was within reach, and so she pressed it into her chest. Her smile fills out further. "Wow, that'll, uh, take some getting used to. How does it - how do you feel?"

Mirepurrs departure had left her feeling sick. Sick with worry, the what-ifs, the 'how are they now's... And she laid out there, staring at the tunnel entrance, hoping, praying to the Stars above that they embrace them gently, with love and soft-spoken words. She prays that they are safe, that Starclan wouldn't let anything happen to her baby, the young kitten that had helped her take care of their younger siblings, to the apprentice that had cared so much for the world, to the warrior, to the lead warrior, to the deputy who had served dutifully.

Please, greet them kindly.

But they're finally in camp, and they announce their arrival. They return as Mirestar, now, and Mistmoth is right when she says it will take time getting used to. She rushes forth, nearly tripping on her paws as she launches up, shouldering past cats to get to the front and she sniffs at them, checking them over as if Starlingheart hadn't been with them.. They smell of odd, far lands that Mapletuft has never traversed. She acknowledges the medicine cat with a quick flash of a smile before shes finally satisfied, drawing backwards to give space. "I'm so glad you're okay..." she breathes a sweet song of relief, all palpable tension in her chest evaporating. Mistmoth had asked how they feel and she looks expectantly at them as everyone comes to greet their newly made elader.

And then it hits her, the fact that Smogstar will not be returning. Maybe... Mirestar saw him in their dreams? They have to have, right? Mapletuft holds her tongue. If her curiosity flares up again, she will just ask another time and not bombard the new leader with questions about tonight.

It hadn't been that long ago when Smogstar had entered the clan after receiving thier lives. Lividsmoke had been there welcoming them as their new ruler with a hope of better times for shadowclan under his reign. It was disappointing how quickly it had ended before anything had even started. Smogstar was a tom they would have stayed behind but Mirestar?. Of course loyalty would always remain to whoever lead but....emotional rulers were never a good sign. Mirestar was the best they had now, for now anyway. Who knew how long this reign would last. After Chilledstar had fallen it seemed bad luck with short reigns had caught up to them again.

" Yes, everything has been going well during your absence." Lividsmoke gave a better respond to the one Ferndance had given, foul mouthed like always that molly was. They could see why she wasn't a lead warrior anymore. " It's good to have you back with us in one piece. " To have someone that could lead them again. Only time could tell if Mirestar would be fitted to lead them all. They had barely had a chance to get used to being a deputy before this misfortune had happened. It was a good thing that Smogstar had picked a deputy before disappearing otherwise they would have been left without anyone to lead them at all.

⋆⁺₊ ☾ ⁺₊⋆ Mirestar.

Mirestar, Mirestar, Mirestar.

Everyone says it, again and again. The world tilts off-kilter, and Swansong finds herself breathless, suspended. She wants to scream, wants to cry out - why, why why? She wants to trek to the moonstone herself, fall to her knees at the towering monument, beg for her father back. She wants to take every one of those cursed lives and give them back to her father. Give her back her father. Mirestar's very name is a death sentence; she is an orphan, and she wants nothing more than to curse the very stars that she has pledged herself to.

She breathes in. Breathes out. Her eyes are unfocused, staring out into the beyond. There is still no body to mourn. Mirestar does not even speak of her father; it is as if he never existed at all.

A plumed tail moves to crush against Halfsun's side, and they do not know which of the two of them that they are trying to comfort. Their face is impassive. "If StarClan wills it..." they breathe, delicate and toneless. There is nothing to be done. They want to scream. "Ah, it is... good to have you back safely... We... managed in your absence... And I am sure... I am sure we will prosper under your guidance." The words taste ashen on her tongue. Placating, but she does not know for whom.

Time ticks by slowly like a lazy river. Mirestar. Batchaser would've thought the name had inspired hope in his eyes, but it feels him with slight uneasiness for his chimeric friend stepping up to the mantle of leader. But, it is the best hope for Shadowclan. Just enough for the marsh-dwellers to survive at least. He was not one to grieve on the passing of others who weren't close to him... it wasn't his business. This Starclan blessing important cats to the most highest of powers, star - touched ones whom could not die until their last life grips them by the throat. Never to return. It meant that Smogstar was gone for good... What an unfortunate development.

The bicolored black smoke titled his head up from a piece of mouse, towards the rising commotion at the entrance of camp. He rises to his paws, tail lashing as his ears twitched forward towards the voice of the newly returned Mirep– no, Mirestar. His friend has returned to Shadowclan. The split - colored phantom lets himself drift towards his new leader with a lazy grin settled on his face, flashing pearly fangs. Stopping next to Ferndance with a soft grunt. "Welcome back... my fluffy friend." He gently rumbled out, looking down at his star - blessed listener.

He pauses, letting his grin drop. "Ah... Glad you could be with us again Mirestar." He dips his head slightly in respect, they may be his leader but they are also a friend of his. It really doesn't change anything about their friendship... All EXCEPT for not being in the warrior's den and moving to the plain oh so lonely leader's den.

Sucks really. Hidden eyes stare down at Mirestar with a huff. A large ear twitched at the voice of several other clanmates saying their own pieces. Though, he is curious about their dreams... Did they see Smogstar up in the heavens or not?

✧ . Though Eerienight would rather not hold the blighted position that is ShadowClan's leader, he often finds himself envious of their abilities.

Void of star-marks and bound to live forever because of it, it's not their extended lives — a shame, that Smogstar's went to waste — that he finds most of interest, rather that of speaking to the fallen, those bound to the stars. Face to face, rather than face to graveyard plot; actual conversation, a chance to hear the dead's voice once more.

It is quite a the privilege, leaders hold in their ceremonies — nine faces to see again. Eerienight would assume to find Spectermask and Chilledstar at his own, would like to speak to Ghostpaw and Tornadopaw again. Stars, even Poppypaw. The spindly tom wonders if any of them spoke with Mirepurr — or….

" Mirestar, " he tests out, though questions how many times he'll say it before he's to test out another star-tailed name. It's proof that they've survived the ceremony, the trek there and back. It's proof that ShadowClan prevails, even in the face of another loss. " Congratulations. " Something to be celebrated, for what little time they may have.
