It Has To Be This Way ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ThunderClan hunting patrol

"Mirestar really said all that?" The flame-sepia warrior gasped at the retelling of ShadowClan's invasion, surprised at the sheer absurdity of it all. Waltzing into their territory like that, demanding they hand it over. . . He had been fighting RiverClan over at Sunningrocks at the same time his clanmates had been protecting their territory from ShadowClan. Their strength divided, ThunderClan had been overwhelmed by their enemies.

"They wouldn't have been able to handle us on their own so they had to team up," The tom growls, stepping into the territory that was theirs. "Come on, let's hunt before some patrol of theirs shows up." He tells his clanmates, dropping into a crouch and skulking away. Ears listen attentively to every little noise in the forest, mouth agape in search for prey-scent.

It doesn't feel good to do this. But this land was theirs, it had been theirs for moons. ShadowClan didn't 'need' it any more than they did. They were starving. What right did ShadowClan have to demand some of their territory? Just thinking about it made anger surge through him, and Roaringsun nearly missed the smell of mouse hanging in the air. Tail-tip flicking, he approaches the mammal slowly, each step calculated — he couldn't lose this. As he gets closer, leaves rustle and the mouse is alerted, but he swiftly leaps at it and delivers the killing bite. Grabbing the animal by its tail, the warrior turns to head back to his group.

"They certainly have a lot of nerve for a swamp rat," Palefire spat in reply to Roaringsun's question. She was still fuming over the audacity the Shadowclan leader displayed in believing they could truly steal from Thunderclan and get away with it. They may have won that battle, but only because the cowards knew they couldn't win in an honest fight and had to rely on Riverclan to divide their forces. Regardless of whether or not Mirestar now considered this strip of forest to be theirs, it wasn't. Once the marsh-dwellers stopped running away like mice and faced them head on, Thunderclan would show them exactly what happened to those who tried to take what belonged to them. She practically salivated at the idea of tearing into Shadowclan flesh once more.

But in the meantime, she would have to satiate her desire for revenge by taking what precious little prey Shadowclan thought they had won from them. The lynx-point had readily agreed when her denmate had suggested taking a hunting patrol out to the part of their territory they had recently fought over. At Roaringsun's urging that they hurry, she cast the flame-pelted tom a confident smirk. "I hope they do show up. I would love for them to watch as we take back what they thought was now safely within their grasp." She turned to her apprentices and tilted her head in subtle encouragement for them to begin their hunt. Eagerness for a fight aside, they did desperately need to bring home some prey, and that needed to be their main concern today.

Luck was on her side it seemed, as it was only a matter of moments before Palefire stumbled across a delicious scent trail. Her pawsteps slowed as instinct took over, her body lowering to the ground and her breaths falling into a focused rhythm. She stalked the leaf-strewn earth until movement caught her eye, a twitching nose poking out from the brush as a field mouse scurried between hiding spots. A slow grin traced her lips as the lilac-furred molly crept ever-closer, occasionally tasting the air to ensure the breeze did not shift to carry her scent towards her prey. Once she was safely within reach of the little rodent the warrior paused, her muscles bunching in finely-honed preparation for her attack. In one swift motion Palefire pushed off from the ground and lunged for the mouse, snapping her jaws tightly around the unsuspecting creature in a decisive killing blow.

⋆。˚ ☁︎ ˚。⋆。˚☀︎˚。⋆ It felt surreal, walking along territory that had been staked by Thunderclan for much longer than Finchpaw himself had even set paws on this earth- for such universal knowledge cast aside in favor of selfish greed. Never before had the stocky apprentice considered casting judgement to his neighbors, for they would surely struggle mutually time and time again, season after season. It was the law of nature, something that intertwined with the laws of the clans themselves. It seemed Shadowclan and Riverclan had no concept of fairness in a world where unfairness seemed to rule, and although Finchpaw knew nothing would come from wallowing in his thoughts, he couldn't help but feel uncharacteristically defeated.

Instead, he would focus on what they had come here for. They needed food same as everyone else, and they would not allow an unjust and falsified change of the borders stop them from taking what should still be rightfully theirs. Shadowclan nor Riverclan would ever be able to traverse these woods the same way a Thunderclanner could, for their souls were not tied to it, their bodies did not dance to the same song, and their blood would never once seep as deeply into the dense forests roots the way theirs all did with the passage of time and in the name of honor. This was their [/u]home[/i], and home was a feeling...they could never take that feeling away, try as they might. Finchpaw would work alongside this familiarity, making quick work of a catch, and although it was nothing strikingly impressive, it would still evoke the utmost appreciation by himself and those it would feed amidst the harshest of the upcoming season.

He was preparing to make his way back feeling confident with what he was able to scrounge up given the scarcity of what was available, however this rare moment of positivity would be short lived as a flash of fur flew like an apparition from the shadows behind him, colliding head-on into his flank and sending him tumbling. His prey would fly from his jaws as he yowled with surprise, shaking the dazed sensation that clouded his mind as he looked up from his position on the ground to witness a Shadowclanner retreating with his catch.

Scalejaw didn't suffer much during the Invasion. No, she had some minor injuries, and she's fought with worse, so she rolls it off her back much like that of water on a duck feather. Her eyes are half-lidded, lazy almost, as she settles in the shadow to watch Thunderclanners intrude on what is theirs, now. On what was hard-fought and won with blood and spit and tears. A tongue licks over her lips, glowering eyes shifting from apprentice to mentor to warriors.

They turned their back, unsuspecting and unaware. Palefire's words cause an ear to flick, and a grin sharpened on her face. I hope she's ready to back that claim up. She thinks, pushing to her paws. Her first, and sudden stop after exploding from the shadows, is dropping onto Roaringsun's back and aiming to slam him to the ground, moving a paw to stomp upon his head as she hopped off. Hopefully during that combination, her second stop is picking the prey up and skips back towards the shadows, a wide grin on her face and eyes narrowed.

"Oh, is that how it is, Thunderclanner?" She all but purrs- but the amusement upon her muzzle and in her tone does not reach her eyes, or her claws. She is rigid and battle-ready, tossing the prey back towards the shadows from whence she came. Feathered tail snapped and swayed, the cobweb patches on her shoulder from Tallstep's defenses rippling with the muscle underneath. "Watching isn't really our style." She states, the lead warrior's ears forward. Take the bait. Take it.

Houndshade was ambivalent about most things, to the point where it teetered on a dangerous apathy. The code was one of the view things she held seriously but even that had its limits. For example how mouse brained is it that they couldn't hunt on territory that was theirs up until a pawful of sunrises ago? Just because ShadowClan were licking their wounds after a loss of their own. She gets it, ThunderClan has lost warriors too but they're not going around pitching a fit at a gathering of all things. How embarrassing, to wage a war when you're clearly in the wrong.

Now they were hungry, she was quick to bend some rules and accompany the patrol to the territory that was once theirs. Finchpaw in tow, she doesn't ask for his opinion on the matter because frankly she doesn't care. If he really didn't want to come then she wouldn't make him but yet here he was anyways. Scenting the territory admit the underbrush and the scarce trees this far out in this direction. An ear flicks in recognition to the conversation beside her but the flash of movement perks her head up. A lone rabbit shares eye contact with her for a moment, one that seems to have been within the area and unaware of the change of management within this landscape right now.

All before it's taken by the jaws of a shadowclanner "shit" she mutters to herself. Of course they're here, they must also be hungry. Thinking fast on her paws she charges for the shadowclanner that holds the prey that she so desperately wants- that the clan desperately needs. fast as she can she brings herself to a sliding stop, kicking up dirt from the course ground underneath them into the eyes of the shadowclanner. There's a huff of satisfaction as they drop the lifeless rabbit and wastes no time to grab it between her own fangs. Using her tail to whip the cheek of the shadowclanner she stole from as she's quick to escape further into their own territory. They're going to get this back over her dead body.

The cry of Finchpaw catches her off guard for a moment. Her victory is caught short as golden gaze seeks out the apprentice, catching the sight of him within the wrath of one of those lizard eaters. "Finchpaw! Leave, now!" There is a rare streak of stern authority from her, slightly muffled by the fur of her catch. Whatever he caught isn't worth it, surely he must know that.

*+:。.。 Singeglare recalled with fog over its clarity this same time last season. He'd still been too young, but he would never forget how frightened Chilledstar had carried themself. They'd looked over the marshland, tinged silver by frost, with nervousness in their eyes - back when they had two - as white slowly overcame the neutral darkness of their homeland. In his youth, Shadowclan's poor luck had been assuaged by a sudden, violent resurgence of frogs that kept them fed through the tough times...but that miracle wouldn't come to pass this year.

He grew up in this time of frost and shivers, yet he didn't miss it. Pelt too short, body fat too low, each step was trembling as he patrolled through Shadowclan's land, and then the newly conquered strip. Thunderclan had plenty of trees and bushes to hide all sorts of bounty - they could spare a measly few fox lengths, especially with all the new mouths to feed within Shadowclan. It was the least they could do after killing Applejaw.

These idiots thought they could honestly waltz back onto land rightfully under new management? Singeglare sneers, eager to prove them wrong.

Fast as a peregrine falcon, he rams into the chimera apprentice, watching with satisfaction as the bumbling kit rolls their pale fur muddy. He catches Finchpaw's discarded prey before it touches the ground. "Next time, hunt on Thunderclan's side of the border" he laughs through his mouthful, leaping back into the shadows with a flaming lash of his tail.

Boiling blue eyes crinkle with satisfaction, watching as one of the Thunderclanners attempts to intimidate Scalejaw. But her claws remain sheathed, she, and all the other murderers, know their place. Letting out a whoop, he steps up beside Scalejaw, "Shadowclan will be eating well tonight!" he hollers, loud enough for the retreating foes to bask in his delight.

Scalejaw may not have given much during the invasion, but Palefire certainly had. She fought with every ounce of indignant rage that festered in her heart, not only for their current troubles but for all that she had been made to suffer in recent days. Shadowclan was merely the latest in a long list of entities that would be made to regret ever messing with Thunderclan. She wanted to watch them all burn for their crimes, and she could not care less whether or not they felt they were justified. Their fish-faced co-conspirators would get what was coming to them as well.

They would all pay the price.

And when Scalejaw came traipsing out of the shadows to lunge at Roaringsun and steal away his hard-won catch, she was sure her time had come. As much as she had initially protested the young tom being allowed to join their ranks, he was now every bit her valued clanmate, and Palefire would not tolerate these worms laying their paws on him.

The mouse dropped from her jaws as her teeth bared in a blaze of anger, her claws unseathing as she took calculated steps toward the dark chimera. "Apparently, dignity isn't your style either. You're too pathetic to keep your clan from sinking into the marsh without skulking around and stealing like the carrion-eating scavengers you are." I will show them the value of honor.

But today would not be that day. There were more important things to worry about, like ensuring the prey they caught was safely delivered to the clan. Palefire took a slow, painful breath before sheathing her claws. With a wary smirk she willed her fur to lie flat again. Scalejaw had almost gotten to her, so quick to anger as she always was. But they would no doubt have used the opportunity to steal from her as well. Singeglare appeared on the heels of his superior to snatch away another of their prizes, but she ignored him.

Houndshade had also managed to hold onto her catch, and walking away with prey Shadowclan thought they owned would be a better lesson anyway. "Sorry to disappoint, but we'll have to pick this up another time. We need to get these home, but I hope you enjoy the prey you were too weak to catch yourself." A touch haughty, perhaps, but she had to quell her desire for blood somehow. With a flick of her tail, Palefire retrieved her mouse and motioned for her apprentices to follow. Hopefully, her clanmates would swiftly do the same. They had mouths to feed.

ooc: rolled a 10 [prey gets taken] and a 14 [prey size] + @SPARKPAW apprentice tag + out unless stopped :p

Addersnap stayed silent during Palefire's retelling of the beginning of ShadowClan's invasion, the inside of his mouth dry as paws crunch over thick frost. He rather not think about the claw marks on his nose, the other nicks and injuries that littered his pelt from a battle that he had almost won. Taking a deep breath, the chocolate tabby turned to Sparkpaw with dull eyes. "'His isn't somethin' we usually do. Ya know it's agains' the code," the mumbled quietly, continuing. "This lea'-bare issa exception. 'Specially wi' how 'hey came onto our land." Signaling the apprentice to stop, he jutted his head towards a scent he had picked up nearby. "Follo' me."

Crouching low to the ground, he figured this would be a good way to show Sparkpaw how to properly catch prey while the grass was slick. Capturing the rabbit between his jaw, the two set back towards the patrol together. A small flicker of pride deep within his chest ignited as he dropped the rabbit at his paws, turning his deep yellow hues to Sparkpaw with an open maw to explain what he had done before suddenly someone from a nearby push poked out their head and extended their neck to grasp his slightly plump rabbit and pull it back, the prey disappearing into the bush as Addersnap was left blinking with confusion. "H- Hey!" He barked out into the nothingness, fur raised as he barred his teeth with a growl. Who in StarClan's name did these ShadowClanners think they were?

Snapping his attention over to Roaringsun, Addersnap's maw was left hanging open again as he watched Scalejaw and Singeglare scoop up their prey from right underneath them, though of course not without a little rough-housing. Burrowing his brows to display his irritation, he took his place in front of Sparkpaw, hiding the apprentice behind his frame if the flame-anointed apprentice would let him. He couldn't muster up the energy to talk back to crow-food like them. Nodding at Palefire's order, he would slip into the shadows with hopefully the rest of the patrol as well.

The fight with ShadowClan had sparked something within her. During the battle her head had felt clear, level in a way she never felt while hunting. Hunting was about patience, about waiting for the perfect moment but battle? Battle had been about action action action and that was something Meadowpaw could do. She could charge onto the field, a yowl in her throat, claws at the ready. She could face any enemy any day, any time! So the idea of going back to their stolen territory sends a thrill up her spine, but not because she was excited to hunt.

It's clear her mind is elsewhere when she looks out onto the trees, the way she follows Ivorypaw like she's not hunting but rather guarding. Turns out though, she was guarding the wrong cat. Her eyes widen as in a flash, ShadowClanners descend upon them. In an instant, she tenses, ready for a fight "Hey! Why don't you pick on someone your own size rat-breath!" she shrieks to the red striped tom as he steals from an apprentice. How low could ShadowClan really get? She wonders.

Before she can do anything else though, Palefire is turning to leave "But-" Meadowpaw opens her mouth to protest but one look from her mentor would be all it took to get her to fall in line, her teeth biting her lower lip as she aims one last glare in the direction of the shadowclanners, sticks out her tongue at them, then turns to follow her mentor back into their territory.
