Not even the turning of seasons ebbed the pain of the recently deceased. Not even his youngest sibling's apprentice ceremony ebbed the grief, though Firefrost desperately tried to show his happiness and offer congratulations.

He wondered if it was enough. Enough to replace the passionate cheers he would have given a moon ago. He wished he could have done it, just as he had planned. Just as he had promised. Now, it was a broken one, and that failure made everything feel so much worse.

Was it a pit with no bottom, one he was doomed to fall into for the rest of his life? With no Bloomheart to pull him out, to make him remember that he was still Firefrost, that he was still loved, that he would get through this. He still had his siblings, he still loved his family, but somehow, it didn't feel like enough to soothe the ache of his heart.

Firefrost didn't even know the depth of his own pain. How long it would last, how far it would go.

It was supposed to be another average day - throw himself into his duties, and then lay in his nest and think. But he was sloppy on patrol, exhausted, and felt somewhat dizzy. He assumed it was just overworking, that he'd just... rest a while, and all would go back to normal in a few days. Normal as it could be with the raging storm of emotion that he was trying not to let out.

Firefrost took in a deep breath. He should eat something, if only to try and keep his energy up. A good choice, so he thought.

* His body did not think so, because as soon as the thought of sinking his teeth into a fish crossed his mind, he gagged. He gagged, and tears pricked in his eyes, and suddenly he was getting sick. He heaved once he was done, head spinning as he forced himself to look up at the crowd of cats around him. Whether they were concerned or not, he felt overly seen and just wanted to disappear.

"I-" he cut himself off with a gasp, voice quiet. "I- Is... this can't be...?"

Blue eyes glanced over the crowd for the medicine cats, or even someone that had carried kits of their own for an answer. Was he actually coming down with something, or was he perhaps... carrying on Bloomheart's legacy?

  • Hard not to notice the change in others when you spent day in and day out with them... it was no secret that Firefrost had become relentless in the pursuit of his duties after Bloomheart's passing. An understanding kept quiet, not addressed... Lichenstar is sure she'd be beside herself too, had been once before and time again when those closest disappeared, died.... never to return. Work was a salve on a bleeding wound, one that medicine cats could not heal. Only time seemed to and even then, it was a poor antidote for the poison of grief.

Still... when he stumbles off, it is enough to catch her attention. She is decidedly, not an expert in these matters but she is nosy about the health of her warriors. This is out of the ordinary and so earns her investigation- "Firefrost," her mew is hoarse, nose twitching in concerned interest. "Are you... alright?" Probably only as alright as one can be after the unsavory act of losing their breakfast but...

It was worth asking, as a show of companionship and awareness. The concept that it might be from something other than a bad meal doesn't cross her mind, only ever around to play sire and surprised receiver of news; Splashdance had gotten away with it for quite some time until she became so painfully round even a blind elder would know her to be expecting.

Joykit sat off to the side, her wide blue and green eyes watching the scene with the curiosity and concern only a kit could have. She wasn't quite sure what had just happened, or why, but there was a sudden charge to the air that felt different. Firefrost, one of the cats she had seen around, had been standing there totally fine one moment and then suddenly… he wasn't. He had stumbled, and before she could wrap her head around why he was suddenly sick.

Her ears flicked back slightly, concern bubbling up inside of her. Was he okay? She didn't know much about sickness, only that it made her think of Hope and Light and it upset her. She watched as Lichenstar approached, speaking to Firefrost in the low voice of someone who had seen this sort of thing before. She could hear the worry in the leaders voice, but also the practiced calm that came with experience.

She felt small, just sitting there. She was just Joykit, still learning how to be a RiverClanner and trying to figure out the intricacies of Clan life. But Firefrost didn't look well, and that made her feel like she had to do something, though she had no idea what. "Did you eat something bad?" she asks, voice soft, hesitant, as she takes a step closer to the ailing tom, trying her best to sound helpful.

She looked up at Lichenstar, then back to Firefrost, still unsure of what to do. "Do you need anything? I could… I could help!" the words came out quickly, a rush of eagerness, though she wasn't exactly certain what she could offer. Her fur bristled slightly with the wave of awkwardness that rolled over her.

  • JOYKIT KIT; SHE / HER ; RUE X UNKNOWN ; SIBLING TO LIGHT & HOPE
Joykit is a fiercely independent and passionate she-kit, born into a harsh world where survival is a constant battle. Abandoned by her mother on the border of RiverClan, she is determined to carve her own path, driven by a competitive spirit and a need to prove herself. Proud and quick-tempered, Joy's journey will be shaped by her struggle to stand strong in a world that doesn't always show mercy.
    Unskilled kit

Houndkit had been within feet of the incident, but was not facing Firefrost until a crowd was beginning to form. He had heard the splatter of vomit which Houndkit couldn't help but make a face in disgust. Houndkit had never thrown up in his life, so there was a lack of sympathy in his reaction. At first, he was annoyed, thinking that he somehow purposely wasted the food he had decided to eat while feeling ill. The annoyance did not last long, as he pushed through the crowd to obnoxiously get a better scope of the scene and noticed that Firefrost's expression was full of fear. Somehow, he even looked a little pale in the eyes.

With Lichenstar and Joykit offering their help and taking control of the situation, Houndkit tried to imagine if the roles were reversed, if Houndkit was the one vomiting in the middle of camp with watchful stares. He certainly wouldn't be happy, and he would actually be quite angry. Instead of addressing Firefrost, the round tabby turned to the crowd and waved his unsheathed claws in the air, hoping that he would create bigger barrier of space for the tom. "Give him space!" Houndkit childishly hissed. He was slightly successful, but no one had distracted themselves, they still stared. "Sheesh!"

Splashdance had it easy. Her yawning weeks of early pregnancy were not plagued with loss nor sickness like Firefrost seems to suffer. She wouldn't outright accuse the tom of anything close - with such an aching heart, it would be only further twisting a knife if she was to point out such an option (even if Firefrost seems to be aware of it himself.) Instead, she idles near the nursery, lost in her own wary fatigue and concern. She almost dips away (towards the warriors den to find her partner, or to the river to soak her aching paws,) but it feels... wrong. She is still any bit a part of Lichenstar's council, even if she must mind kits in the shroud of the nursery. She cannot just turn away when Clanmates are in need.

"Houndkit," she beckons the hissing little tom, and then the little molly before him, "Joykit. Could you two find Moonbeam or Robinheart? They'll be able to help Firefrost..." Lichenstar offers companionship and warmth, which may assuage the guilt or fear that will bloom henceforth, but only the medicine cats can confidently say what may ail Firefrost.
