private MELANCHOLY STAR | maelstrompaw

"How are you feeling with your headaches, Maelstrompaw? Have you tried what I told you about getting more sleep or eating fresher prey?" Celandinepaw called from deeper in the medicine cat den, though even her voice cusped in the eve of a day's worth of hard work, softened by the rough hands of preparation for an imminent leaf-bare. With her nose buried in a pungent pool of herbs, the golden molly had come to an impasse in regard to the young cat's chronic migraines. Cottonsprig and Wolfsong had not taught her any remedies nor mitigations for such an afflication, so of course, she took it upon herself to find a cure. There was part of her that still conceptualized her prestigious role as a mere game, as a puzzle to rearrange until the fuller picture grew clear. Wheat-tinged eyes turned towards the raincloud-hued molly, like the newly-appointed apprentice became tender in twilight's light, a lamb of turned limb and lowered crown. The medicine cat apprentice felt quite bad for Maelstrompaw, as if they were beset by an ungentle instinct to only run and hide away, almost harelike in the manner that Celandinepaw had observed. This was not an ailment of the visible body, but something that wracked the very mind itself, almost spiritual in the way that it could never present itself in the tangible world.

Maelstrompaw feels a warm flutter in their chest at Celandinepaw's concern, the soft glow of her worried eyes bringing a small comfort amidst the ever-present haze of their headaches. The young molly is tucked away in the back of the medicine cat den, her nose buried deep in a pungent pool of herbs, the earthy scent mingling with the fresh air filtering through the entrance. Despite the hard work marking the day, there's a gentleness in her voice that makes Mae's heart race with appreciation. "Oh, um, well, I try!" Maelstrompaw starts, their voice barely above a whisper as they shuffle their paws nervously. The familiar pressure is ever-present behind their eyes, but they force a smile, determined to keep the conversation light. "But sleeping, um, doesn't always happen just because I want it to," they admit with a small sigh. The weight of their exhaustion settles more heavily on their shoulders, making it hard to focus on anything other than the dull ache that lingers in their head like an unwelcome guest.

"It's kind of annoying, really!" Mae continues, their tone a mix of frustration and resignation. "It feels like I'm trying to catch shadows; just when I think I have a hold on it, it slips away. I mean, how is that fair?" They glance at Celandinepaw, who is so diligently searching for answers, and a spark of admiration lights up their tired eyes. "But I think it's really nice that you're trying to figure it out! You know, it feels like a mystery, doesn't it?" Drawing in a deep breath, Maelstrompaw takes a small step closer, lowering their voice like they're sharing a secret. "Just imagine! One day, you'll be the first one to crack it and find what works, and everyone will come to you for help. Celandinepaw, the miracle cure for mind-pains! How cool would that be?" They grin, their enthusiasm bubbling over despite the lingering discomfort.

In that moment, the world outside fades away, and Mae finds solace in Celandinepaw's determination. "I can already picture it! You'll have a whole line of cats waiting for your magic touch! Everyone in all the Clans will come to you for help, 'cause you'll be so amazing for figuring it out."
