camp Must of been the wind || gender confusion

☾ ⋆*・゚ Something was wrong; well, not really. Their tummy didn't hurt, but her mind told her something was. When their mother was still alive, all her kits were treated the same except for vague names. Honestly, Beetlekit didn't even know if their mother knew which ones of her spawn were boys and which ones were girls, not that it mattered anyway; everyone else was dead.

Being brought to the clans was weird; there were so many rules and expectations for them to follow. Their name got a funny addition. And that apparently they were a girl. That one never really settled into their mind; they are just Beetlepaw, the apprentice that likes bugs, bones, and the smell of their rotting moss in their nest.

Beetlepaw sat scooping up snow from all around her, pushing it into a pile that was vaguely catlike with two twin peaks on top of the circular mound. Their black and brown tail curling around them before swishing over to the other side of their body. The faint whispers of cats passing by didn't really register in her mind as they kept talking about some girl. Whoever she is, she certainly was sitting around for a while.

Breaking away from their thoughts to look around for the she-cat the whispers were talking about, only to find eyes glancing at them instead. "Umm, I'm not a g-girl… or a b-boy. I'm just…" The apprentice muttered, trying to defend themselves from no one in particular. "I don't know." Beetlepaw stood up with their ears pinned back and tried to shake the cold that seeped into their body while they were sitting around. "P-Please don't… call me her"

I love you, and if you want, I'll call you King

Invisible eyebrows raise. Wasppaw hadn't been blind when she entered camp carrying fresh kill, another apprentice had been sitting alone long enough to gather whispers. Wind Clan, it seemed, was always whispering. Seems gossip whets their tongues more then the fresh kill they were lucky enough to have during the season's harsh cold. Are other clans this conceited?
Careful not to disrupt the scene - the last thing she wanted was those eyes on her - she deposited the fresh kill and began talking to another cat. Small talk mostly, but her mind was on Beetlepaw. Her concentration slips when the cat spoke.
Not a girl? Or a boy? Is that allowed?
Scared green eyes search the faces of those that heard. Would this be accepted? Wasppaw had been an outcast since birth, a virtue of being born half-clan and having traitor blood through her veins. She learned at a young age to play a social game. To be unremarkable, simple, normal. This went against norms, didn't it? Though truthfully, it didn't matter to her.
Cats change their names as they grow. A reflection of them becoming more realized. More them. Why should small things like pronouns matter? It was stupid to hold so tightly to something that, in the end, doesn't matter.
Two wolves fought in her. One of social anxiety, the other of respect for Beetlepaw. This must've been a hard decision. And to wield such vulnerability like a blunt instrument. Beetlepaw was brave. But would their clan mates see this as such?
Knashing teeth and howls reverberated through her chest as a wolf declared private victory. Wasppaw allows herself a small smile. It crinkles the edges of her eyes in a way that feels real.
"Okay," She nods, ignoring any eyes her words might bring her way. The shadow of Snakebite smiles at Beetlepaw. Though she doesn't verbalize it, there is a small fire that is lit in her. Both in awe of Beetlepaw's quite bravery and in silent protection of the cat. The next cat to call Beetlepaw something they weren't would see the end of Wasppaw's quite wrath.

But why do I lie awake each night thinking
"Instead of you, it should be me"?

While Rowanpaw had not been a part of the group that was currently engaged in conversation, they had observantly picked up on the situation unfolding before their eyes. What Beetlepaw had expressed to the other cats prompted a raise of their faux brows — that was an incredibly brave statement to make, especially on a whim like that. Not even Rowanpaw had publicly clarified their identity to the clan as a kit; they had simply let it adapt over time, far too reserved to confront anyone.

Standing next to their littermate, Rowanpaw blinks their bi-colored gaze at the younger apprentice and lets words of support perch on the edge of their tongue. "I..." Understand how you feel. Perhaps not exactly, but certainly to an extent. It was not as if they had abandoned their identity as a she-cat entirely, but they also gravitated more toward... nothing at all. They were just... Rowanpaw. That was what they wanted to be known as. And, knowing their clanmates, they knew that wanting to express personal change should not be an issue at all. It hadn't been for them or anyone else they knew of.

Rowanpaw cannot find it within themselves to share any sentiments that are too personal, at least not in public, so they instead offer, "... Am here. If you need to, erm, talk." A rare offering from the stoic tunneler trainee, one who rarely socialized with their peers outside of training talk and clan discussion, but the calico could not help but see a part of themselves in Beetlepaw — even down to the splashes of tabby upon their dark pelt.

Celandinepaw understood how Beetlepaw felt, to a terribly sharp degree. The dissonance felt as though it were a needle driven straight through a bleeding heart, until it pierced into the soul and drew away the sanguine of life. Of course, that was much too dramatic of a retelling of how she felt as a kitten, for she hadn't the words to express her desire. There only existed the want to become something else, though it was not an 'else' to her - it was her. "Does 'they' work for you, Beetlepaw?" The medicine cat apprentice approached the crowd of adolescents with a warmth-dipped smile, as though the torrid sun shone slight within her cheeks, stirring along her now-thinned face. Olive-hued eyes fell upon Rowanpaw and Wasppaw, both siblings not entirely renowned for their openness. Still, the felines doled compassion in their own way, and she could respect it as such. "I know how it is. When I was a young kit - I couldn't have been more than two or three moons old, really - I also knew that I didn't want to be who I was then. It's a journey, for sure, but you'll feel much better once you get to the bottom of who you really are." The medicine cat apprentice knew she was incredibly fortunate to have supportive family and friends, and perhaps her own effusive light could be used to shine upon the younger and more vulnerable, resonating upon those she was meant to preside over. To her, it was as simple as shifting her presentation and allowing herself to flow into who she was meant to be. For others, their kin might be more stubborn and rock-headed... Isn't that why I'm a medicine cat, anyhow? To help others. This is a way to help, too.

  • OUT OF CHARACTER. i love you beetle...

    — MEDICINAL EXPERTISE: Celandinepaw is the current medicine cat apprentice of Windclan. Although she is quite new to her position, she also has much expertise with treatment regarding infectious diseases and basic remedies. As for anything more complex... you're better off asking a more experienced medicine cat.

  • CELANDINEPAW & SHE / HER & 16 MOONS
—— Medicine Cat Apprentice of Windclan / Mentored by Cottonsprig
—— A shorthaired, wheat-yellow spotted tabby with yellowish-green eyes. Somewhat pudgy, though lean and able to hold her ground in the wild. Broad-shouldered and tall compared to her smaller clanmates, she stands out through a Windclan crowd.
—— Outgoing and terribly saccharine, she is a friendly and affable face in Windclan. Though ditzy and cowardly, she tries her best to help her clan as one of their healers. She is prone to outbursts when spurned or stressed. She also tends to follow her own personal code and will often go for a safe, painless option.
