pafp POSTCARD FROM NOWHERE ♱ [ SEEKING ADVICE ]

We move on. That's what Scalejaw had said on the matter of Smogstar's disappearance. It's possibly the most annoying answer she could've given him, he thinks. On par with telling a grieving cat to cheer up! Move on was not what they should do, but what they'd have to do, as is dictated by the cruel and never-ending march of time. Of course, moving on was subjective, and in most cases a matter of names changing only. Who was still clinging onto their old memories of Briarstar? Of Pitchstar? Starlingheart was, surely — They had only just burried Chilledstar, how could someone ask them to move on another time, so quickly?

A picture of wide-eyed anxiety is burned into the likeness of Sharpshadow ever since that night. She twists her neck to search for him even when the odds are possible. Reeds rustle and shift, and for the only time in her life, she wishes for something other than prey to appear behind them. Even in absence ( Dare she think — maybe even in death? ) Smogstar only manages to annoy her to no end.

She leers toward a clanmate — Amberhaze — maybe just so she can do anything but keep playing this unwinnable game of hide-and-seek. Amberhaze never seemed to shut his mouth, did he? Maybe he could yammer on about something productive for once in his life. ( Unfortunately for him, it was true: Sharpshadow is taking out a bit of his anger onto him ) " Amberhaze, " the call is like a viper's lash, more than a friendly greeting between clanmates. " You — you got a plan for this one? Code: Our-Leader-just-disappeared-into-thin-air? " The words come out harsh, but her chest clearly heaves with effort. Her eyes are clearly panic-stricken. The warrior's face tics as she presses closer to him. " Cause I- I'd love to hear it, right about now... "

OOC: please wait for @Amberhaze :3

⚛︎₊˚‧ The tight ball that made up the otherwise hollow cavity of his chest continued to protest against him in the form of raking, sharp pains and pulsating aches as the fear of what he couldn't understand continued to consume him ravenously, eating him alive piece by piece with every rise and fall of the obscured sun above the shrouded pine canopy. The uncertainty of the clan and the way their former leader's disappearance seemed to do nothing but drive the remainder of them apart was a phenomenon he could not cope with- change being something he did not take well to, so much so that he would even react negatively to the alterations of the very seasons, something so natural it was like breathing the air.

Smogstar had always been a disconcerting presence to him, foreboding and unpredictable in a way that made Amberhaze's pelt prickle with discomfort and the overwhelming instinct that told him to run, but that in itself was something he had grown accustomed to, the familiarity of what he couldn't pinpoint about the daunting presence of Smogstar one that he had learned how to coexist with and numb himself to so that it became what was right and what should be. Now it was gone, and it was no longer as it should be, the vacancy left behind, although perhaps much less stressful in comparison, was undoubtedly new- and what was new was just as hard to navigate as the entity that he had looked at with potent hesitancy.

He had been pacing, his breathing shallow as he struggled to keep his muddled mind from running itself in circles to the point of no return- he had been breaking down much more often lately, the eyes of those surrounding him bearing witness to such pathetic behavior something that he almost couldn't care for anymore. No amount of attention could ever amount to the anguish that he felt when he floundered in the waters of his ocean of thoughts so real to him he could not break the surface for an ounce of peaceful consolation. His only saving grace this time was the presence of one who was just as desperate as he was, though her ability to conceal it feigned composure and sensibility- at least to those unlike Amberhaze, who could detect the same doubt and helplessness inside the eyes which bore into his own. Their emotions a mirror to each other.

"You — you got a plan for this one? Code: Our-Leader-just-disappeared-into-thin-air? ...Cause I- I'd love to hear it, right about now..."

It was a surprise to hear that someone as callous as Sharpshadow would willingly subject himself to the incoherent ramblings of Amberhaze, the way he would drone endlessly on about what could be in the near or far future enough to drive even the most sane individual mad- but he was always prepared, what was left of sound mind perpetually in motion in order to cultivate anything and everything possible to keep its bearer and those who he desired to remain with safe from catastrophe. Perhaps Sharpshadow was simply humoring him, or doing what she could to occupy herself with something much more mind numbing than mulling over the endless possibilities of what misfortune, or perhaps fortune, may have befallen her former mentor who she clearly held with high regard and perhaps unhealthy amounts of attachment. Whatever the reason, it mattered little to Amberhaze, who would take this opportunity with zeal in an attempt to keep himself grounded.

"Oh! Um, yes. W-well, no- actually, uh-" He would struggle to formulate his desired sentence for a moment, still clearly frazzled from his prior panic stricken rumination. He did have a plan, he had a scene in his head that he could play out with ease if he only closed his eyes, however it was without question that not every decision that would need to be made in order to see it through to fruition was within his control. A disappointment for sure, but beyond that, a liability. He was unsure if it would be what Sharpshadow hoped to hear, if he was capable of holding any form of hope at all. "I do." He allowed a labored breath to escape him before continuing on with shifting paws. "I-It's just...There are s-some kinks that still n-need to- uh- be...worked out. Or rather- um- others need to w-work out." His hollowed gaze would begin to shift then, optics frantically flicking every which way until they lingered on the frame of Mirepurr, though not long enough for it to be noticed by those who lacked proper perception.

He would lean closer to Sharpshadow then, allowing his trembling voice to lower so that it was meant for his ears alone. "The plan would uh- go much smoother if- if our deputy...actually stepped up to uh- to lead. F-Formally, I mean." Although potentially insensitive- of course it was a difficult transition for them, having been named deputy so soon only to be cast straight into the limelight without the leadership experience to match- and that wasn't even touching on the emotional turmoil that had rained down on the clan as a result of it's leader's mysterious disappearance, his concerns came from a genuine place. They could not go on without a proper hierarchy in place, and as it stood now, what was once whole and as stable as it could be was now naught but ash, and it would only be a matter of time before the strain of it began to take hold and show itself not only within their own ranks, but those neighboring them who would surely relish the opportunity to stick their noses into places they had no business being in. But beyond that, and what was of the highest concern to Amberhaze, was what they might do if they were to discover their hidden turmoil- would they use it to their advantage? Strike them down when they were at their most vulnerable? Try to take control of what was left of them while they were weak? Their information, resources, land, prey, their very souls could be snatched away in the blink of an eye and at any point should only a sliver of what was a private affair found its way gliding into the ears of one with malicious intent and ambitions strong enough to actually take action. He felt defenseless and barren even in the heart of his own camp, and sleep was something that he realized had become increasingly harder to come by as of late.

Gigglepaw wouldn't say that she's an eavesdropper, because she isn't, but she can't help but overhear bits and pieces of Sharpshadow and Amberhaze's conversation as she's passing them. Code: Our Leader just disappeared into thin air is one way of putting it, she guesses, but she also think it's a rather crude way of putting the situation. It made it sound like some sort of game that she would play, not something as serious as ShadowClan's leader having gone missing without so much of a trace. She knows that Sharpshadow means well, though; she'd seen the way the warrior had defended Smogstar in front of Salamandersnap.

"What kinda kinks need to be figured out?" Gigglepaw asks as she finds herself drifting over to where the two warriors are talking. "If there's anythin' I can do to help out, I wanna help," she blurts, ears perked. Did Amberhaze really have some sort of plan? Did it include finding Smogstar, or was it as simple as 'moving on', as so many had said that they must do? "I'm sure Mirepurr is just waitin' for when-" Gigglepaw frowns, kneads at the dirt beneath her paws before correcting herself; all the adults had insisted, so who was she to stray from their wisdom? "If Smogstar comes back, y'know? I bet it's a lot of pressure on 'em..."

Reactions: Amberhaze
Conversations left open-ended, that is what Mapletuft is drawn to when she lounges in camp, tilting her face to the sky and letting the coming leaf-fall breeze billow through her fur. When Sharpshadow asks Amberhaze, she does not mean to eavesdrop but she does so anyways, turning her head towards the pair that chitter-chat between each other. And then... If our deputy actually stepped up to lead-

Mapletufts voice is nothing more than frustrated when she speaks up. "They will when they're ready." anger does not suit the warrior, not when it leaves her chest feeling tight, not when it leaves her mouth dry... But she cannot help it, not when her own former apprentice had spoken of her distaste of them, not when shes sitting here, listening to Amberhaze say that Mirepurr should just step up. She's taken it upon herself to not let anyone pressure the cat she considered almost like her child, fur raising upon her back and then flattening as she lets out a heavy sigh. "Prematurely pushing a cat that isn't ready in to a position of power is not a good thing." and yet, how long could Shadowclan go without a leader? Maple pushes this thought down in favor of Mirepurrs image. They have pressure from both sides... They don't need pressure from her. She's nothing more than a concerned parent... They don't need her ire. They don't need it...

She levels Sharpshadow with a stare. She had asked for advice, right? "We just continue like normal- what can we do? We keep looking..." what else could they do? "And if not, then we survive this like we survived every other time..." it will not be the answer Sharpshadow is looking for, but to Mapletuft, this is the most realistic answer possible. They survived Briarstar losing all of her lives at once, Pitchstar, maddened with grief, the stress from leadership, Chilledstar, grieving Pitchstar... And now they must survive Smogstars disappearance, and they will survive Mirepurrs brief wait to ascension.

There is no other answer. Shadowclan survives, no matter how many hits they take. No matter how hard it hurts. When she thinks of the bears, her heart squeezes- they survived, even if some of their clanmates didn't. She survived even if her daughter didn't.

Her voice is infinitely softer when she addresses Gigglepaw, agreeing with her whole-heartedly. "A lot of pressure, indeed."

A large ear twitches towards the trembling voice of Amberhaze, lifting his head up from his paws. Something about kinks? The bicolored tom lifts his head from pale - splashed paws to turn his head towards the interesting pair– that was Sharpshadow and Amberhaze. Honestly, he could say that he is an eavesdropper at fault, so many different things he likes to stick his ear up towards. To be honest, he could say that he is an eavesdropper by nature, with so many diverse things he likes to listen in on.

Batchaser hears different bits and pieces of the conversation. He finds himself on his paws, slithering over with a lazy tail flick. Head tilted up, the corners of his mouth drawn to a line, his hidden gaze blinked to Gigglepaw and then to Mapletuft. Ah.. Smogstar's disappearance. His ear twitches as he listens to the conversation playing out. The curled phantom blinks at the frustrated voice of Mapletuf, he agrees with the older warrior with a slow nod. "Indeed... When Mirepurr is ready and willing to." Pale paws knead at the ground below him. He doesn't truly agree or disagree with Amberhaze's words of the clans deputy stepping up to the leader position. Yes, he wants to see Mirepurr be a leader but... by their own pace. Though... How long could Shadowclan go with a leader to guide them?
