PUSHING THE TIDES ↷ [ pre-gathering chatter ]

It'd be untrue to suggest Smogmaw's spirits were dampened by what lies ahead, given that his spirits generally weren't very high to begin with.

Still, as he heralds the droves of healthy ShadowClan cats into the clearing, he mulls over the likelihood of setting his eyes on Fourtrees again. The notion doesn't quite register on his emotional radar. It's an obnoxious eyesore, the seas of feline faces spilling over one another, baring fang and spitting venom at whoever their clan feuded with. He prefers his trees to be of the pine variety, thank you very much, and he'd opt for stepping in a mud puddle over someone else's tail on any day.

Should he go belly-up during this journey, though, and be robbed of the chance to ever step foot upon the Great Rock, Smogmaw will crawl out of whatever hell he's put in and see to it that SkyClan is haunted until his soul withers into obscurity.

"I don't want to see any smiles tonight," the deputy pauses to instruct, swiveling head over shoulder to glimpse his ensemble. "This is a gloomy occasion, and we need to set the tone appropriately." One needn't be a brainiac to figure the pervading attitude throughout the clans is a miserable one. Everybody knows somebody who has already keeled over or is on the brink of doing so. Teeth grit together as he recalls the state of his mate and son; stars, he'll miss Halfshade so much if she doesn't make it.

He'd rather refrain from brooding at this point, and that's precisely why he'd been so fixated on how ugly the scenery is. Legions of watchful eyes will be converging on the clearing in the ensuing moments, and he's unwilling to let any observe his moments of weakness. So, the clouds of displeasure over his expression soon part, revealing a grin in their stead, and the tom makes off for the base of the Great Rock.

The atmosphere that hangs over Fourtrees is grim, full moon floating unbothered and unobstructed in the sky above them. Orangeblossom walks at Blazestar's shoulder as always, steadfastly ignoring the ache in her leg for the time being, though she knows it's been aggravated both by the trek here and the presence of its origin tucked away in the camp.

"Remember what I said before we left." Orangeblossom warns the SkyClanners as they duck beneath the boughs of the Gathering-place. She makes no move to reiterate her words, her warning to the SkyClanners not to breathe a single implication of their WindClan prisoners to each other or any other cat gathered here tonight. She wonders if Sootstar will have already replaced Badgermoon. If they weren't to leave tonight she might take great pride in rubbing that in his bloodied muzzle upon their return home.

Though, speaking of deputies, a much kinder counterpart has beaten her here tonight. Smogmaw is no friendly face, but she has no quarrel with ShadowClan. Their warriors had not spoken up in support of the accusations piled atop SkyClan in the last moon, and so Orangeblossom regards the older tomcat with a curious respect that a part of her, still young in the face of experience, hopes he returns.

"Smogmaw." She greets. She quite desperately wants to ask who Chilledstar has chosen, who would be undertaking this venture on the marshes' behalf, but instead she settles for formality: "How fares ShadowClan through all of this?"

The clearing is quiet, a funereal pallor hanging over Fourtrees like decorative ivy. Iciclefang normally has no qualms about separating from her Clanmates, but tonight it feels terribly final. She sees Orangeblossom and Smogmaw in their customary deputy spots, and looks upon the ranks of SkyClan and ShadowClan to see who might be embarking on this quest with her. She recognizes no one yet, and frustration darkens her icy gaze.

She is not bold enough to approach the deputies mid-conversation; it’s not her place, and besides, she wants to find a peer or near-equivalent who is also making the dangerous trek past Highstones. The tortoiseshell turns to her closest RiverClan peer, murmuring, “I wonder which of them is actually going. It can’t be all of them, right?” Her eyes narrow shrewdly. “Too many cats here.

She follows Howlingstar into the clearing. The occasional brush from Flycatcher's side is enough to briefly settle her nerves, but the closer they get, the closer she is to leaving. She had already said her goodbyes to everyone, but actually leaving the camp had been much, much harder than she could have ever imagined. Flamewhisker held little hope that she would ever see her clanmates again...She would miss her mate, their children. She would miss Howlingstar...Sunfreckle, Rabbitnose, all of their kits. She would miss Raccoonstripe. Cloudyfur and Acornpaw...her two apprentices, she hopes that she would not see Cloudyfur in Starclan, and that the rest of their patrol would make it home with the cure. Dreampaw...Tigerpaw...Stars, she would miss everybody. Even though they were not her blood family, they were still her family. Thunderclan had become her home.

It was now her duty to save it.

She had to ensure her clanmates make it home...ensure her daughter makes it home. As she pads into the clearing, she lifts her chin ever so slightly. The other clans must not know how she was grieving...You must put on your brave face. A mask she wore well. As she glanced around the clearing, she wondered who else would be leaving with them. She pushes against her mate's side, not wanting to be away from him for now. This could be the last time they saw each other. "This is it." she breathes quietly, looking over to meet his gaze.

* ˚ He follows after his group with ears perked forward and holds his breath for a moment before exhaling, Hailstorm was admittedly a little nervous but he knew that he was doing this for those he cared about and his clan. He'd do whatever he could to make sure that Thunderclan survives it has for this long and he'd make sure that it would continue to do so yet the thought of travelling with the other clans is unnerving but another part of him is curious... The large snowy warrior deciding that he should stay relatively optimistic despite the hard times they were currently facing yet he glances over to his side to smile at his clanmates before his gaze focused on Little Wolf briefly letting their pelts brush for a heartbeat, warm amber eyes locking with the gentle green eyes that she had "Nervous? I'm just a bit nervous admittedly," He begins in a low voice to her despite the lopsided grin on his maw, his eyes were a dead giveaway for how he felt even for a brief heartbeat before he let's out another low breath. This was definitely quite the experience but he's glad that Batwing, Little Wolf, and the rest of his clanmates are here.

"I'm ready... And moreso knowing you got my back, Big Bear." He says to her genuinely, he's ready to push away the clan differences if it meant working together to ensure the survival of not just them but the rest of the clans. It was daunting really but he thinks more about how many cats would join this perilous quest for the cure, an ear flicks as he decides to sit down to use a large paw to brush down the fur on his chest.

Blazestar had warned them not to tell anyone about Badgermoon and Curlewnose. Still, Cherrypaw waltzes into Fourtrees nearly bursting at the seams with the secret. It presses against the inside of her skin like air trapped between puffed cheeks, one funny look or awry comment away from bursting into release. Even her stride is buoyed, though it may simply be from the excitement crackling in her belly and through her legs, drawing her taller like a thunderhead gathering high into the sky. Their prisoner's apprentice crosses her mind from time to time too, like an errant streak of lightning in the bowels of a cloud. Scorchpaw probably wouldn't be here tonight. What were the chances of her being chosen for the Gathering twice in a row?

Yellow eyes blink berry-bright in the midst of the SkyClan cats. Would there be anyone she recognized? Howlingstar is no doubt joining Blazestar in their customary positions upon the tree; she thinks she can spot the plump brown tabby as she ascends. And there—the scarred black molly who Orangeblossom introduced as Little Wolf is over there, but she already seems deep in conversation with a big pale tom. Cherrypaw gives herself another moment to swipe a paw over her ears. She's only delaying the inevitable, the task of finding someone to converse with. The task of leaving everything she's ever known behind.

A torn ear flickered in acknowledgment, padding forward to scour the gathering clans, molten copper narrowing. He didn’t bother socializing, simply letting his paws take him further away from talkative cats to sit, letting his hulking frame settle. He bit back a sigh, letting a tired optic scan the crowd, expression indifferent to the bumbling chatter that filled his ears.

He wondered who else was comin’ along on the journey, watching the gathering cats with a critical optic. This was it. He couldn’t help but think, wonderin’ for a slight second if this would be his last, but he didn’t dwell on the thought for long, instead picking up his helm, watching SkyClan with a flick of his wooly tail.

The marred flesh beneath obsidian fur prickled, noticing familiar pelts, but not enough to consider them anythin’ but faces he’d spot in a crowd. The atmosphere was gloomy, making it curl around his bulky form, expression darkening. He couldn’t help but glance in WindClan’s direction but didn’t bother staring for long.

There wasn’t much to look at. He nearly snorted at the thought, molten copper crinkling, but otherwise remained silent, nothin’ more than a looming shadow unless someone was willin’ enough to speak to the scarred tom.

✿—— there's little good cheer tonight in fourtrees—with the leaders' seemingly constant quarreling, such a thing was sparse to begin with, but it's entirely absent tonight. the shadow of the journey is cast long over tonight's gathering, the knowledge that they will depart as soon as the moon rises only a little higher an impossible weight in her chest. she is merely part of the milling crowd that follows blazestar as orangeblossom flanks him, but she still finds a pale gaze seeking out his broad golden back. a bit embarassed when orangeblossom's voice pierces low in the air, she's quick to realize it's a general instruction rather than a notice of her staring, and the lilac tabby delivers a quick, sharp nod in response. stars above, she'd be the last cat to breathe a word of their new prisoners.

once orangeblossom disperses to chat with a slightly surly-looking tabby tom at the base of the rock, no doubt another deputy, she pushes through the crowd to catch up with blazestar before he, too, can depart to talk with the other leaders. it's selfish, but she wants a last goodbye—a momentary comfort as opposed to the strange circling of the topic they've been doing ever since she volunteered. once she gets the golden tom's attention, the tabby nods towards the outskirts of the crowd and extricates herself from the masses, hoping to avoid an intrusion on their conversation. the gathering is full of far too many eyes for her to say everything she wants to, emotion catching her throat like claws.

"i don't want to keep you, i just - i just wanted to say goodbye," she mews lowly, shifting on her paws as the tabby lifts a green gaze to meet blue, hoping her eyes can say what she does not want to in front of so many cats - that she will miss him. that she will do everything she can to find the lungwort, but she would do everything and more to ensure she comes back. finally, she lowers her maned head, aware that the last dregs of her time with him are seeping away and quietly offers, "i'll come back, i swear it. i just - i have to do this."

nightbird made her way into the clearing alongside her clanmates. the walk to fourtrees was quiet, it felt strange to make the journey without duskpaw tagging along beside. sick and tucked away in camp, he was strong, a fighter. she didn't doubt that he could pull through.

cats broke off to mingle, a hushed blanket of dread seemed to be upon them all. nightbird took a spot towards the front of where thunderclan had settled, sitting and watching subtle, and not so much so, goodbyes from those who were to leave. her tail moved to wrap around her paws, tapping rhythmically and gently from the anticipation.

hopefully they would cut the chatting short this time, it was already late and the more the moon moved the less time they would have to make headway before morning.

This could be the last time he sees Fourtrees.

It wasn't as if Slate wasn't confident in his ability to persist and survive — he had lived a rough life on the streets for the majority of his life. With plenty of muscle on his bones, he was a tough cat to take down. However, he'd be foolish to assume that unknown threats and dangers awaited him on the journey ahead... Maybe he'd even encounter things that he'd never seen before in his life. Slate hadn't exactly taken the time to process everything and consider the risk he was taking, as he had simply volunteered his name and spent the last few days preparing for his departure.

Maybe it was easier not to think. Maybe it was better to bite the stick and go forth, braving whatever challenges the world threw at them.

The Maine Coon keeps his head down for the most part as he follows SkyClan into the gathering place. Ora has gone to take her place with the other deputies, and everyone else has broken off to mingle with other cats. As always, he keeps to himself, choosing a spot to hunker down until the announcements begin.

Greeneyes is silent as SkyClan’s gathering-goers make their way to the Fourtrees. The possibility that this could very well be his last walk down this path is not lost on him, especially with Falconpaw near by.

Falconpaw, his apprentice - Greeneyes’s heart sinks at the thought of leaving the kid behind. Only a few moons into their training, the warrior assumes someone else will have to take over for him while he’s gone. Hopefully Falconpaw will do alright with such a change - hopefully he’ll stay safe without Greeneyes watching over him.

Greeneyes glances over at him as SkyClan arrives, noticing then just how much Falconpaw has grown already. He was just a little scrap of fur a few moons ago, he swears, but the tom is already coming into his own, already standing taller than what he had when they’d arrived here the night of Falconpaw’s apprentice ceremony. Time passes too quickly, Greeneyes thinks for the second time in recent days. Falconpaw will be a warrior before he knows it.

The clearing too, is quiet, eerily solemn with the weight of the night’s impending departures. Orangeblossom’s swift reminder before they make their entrance nearly startles the warrior, ears twitching as he looks to the deputy with a nod in acknowledgement. As everyone splits off, Greeneyes looks to Falconpaw once again.

Here we are —” he says with a small hum, his heart beginning to sink once more. How does one say goodbye to their apprentice? Sheepcurl hadn’t quite prepared him for this moment, had she? Not until recently, until he’d been a warrior for moons. “You… You be good while I’m gone, okay, amigo? Don’t get into too much trouble.” He jokes, sort of.

In the few moons he had lived with Skyclan and gained knowledge of gatherings, this certainly wasn't what he had imagined.

The air seemed thick with the shadows of doubts and frets, which evidently enveloped the minds of every cat present. Dog watched his clanmates prepare for the harrowing journey ahead. Wishing one another sweet goodbyes as the reality of not joining them put him at a loss.

It felt as if his galloping spotted paws were cutting through the fog of uncertainty itself.

Slowing to a halt behind the throng of his clanmates, Dog's mind was frazzled by the onslaught of nauseating scents that came with a gathering. It was a potent mixture, carrying the odors of generations worth of cats. He decided to stick close to his group, choosing not to mingle, and settled to the far left of Slate's hulking form.

Soft beige, cream, and cinnamon splotched stripes decorated his fur. His wiry frame stood out starkly against the backdrop of Skyclan cats, scarred muzzle a testament to the hardships he had endured.

Jitters of being in a new environment began to melt away as the stirring of voices rose above the veil of depressing thoughts. However, he still was far too anxious to seek out conversation. Knowing that today might be the last time he ever sees his clanmates was heartbreaking, akin to dropping a stone within the pits of his stomach.

Every ounce of uncertainty laid out before them, gnawed at their insides, making it all the more bittersweet.

She follows behind her mother, the glow of orange on her pelt a sign of comfort to the young tricolor apprentice. She does not dare to speak—the tension among every cat here and the journey stretching before them is enough to prompt her into silence. She watches her mother brush against her father and her eyes soften. If only Falconpaw and Flycatcher could come with, she thinks. She is lucky, and may be the only apprentice joining. It is not often one gets to go on a warrior's journey and Stormpaw considers it a great honor.

She grits her teeth and steadies her form, pushing forward to brush in between Flycatcher and Flamewhisker with a purr. "I'll miss you, dad." She attempts to butt her head into his chest. "I'll take care of mom." Her eyes glitter.

@Flamewhisker and @Flycatcher

Her heart flutters in her chest, a bird trapped in a cage beating desperately against her ribs. It is all nerves, she knows. The fear of going out into that great big unknown. But Little Wolf is a mother, a big sister, a daughter. There are a multitude of reasons for her to go, for her to be strong and as she makes her way into the clearing she reminds herself of all of them. For my children. For my family. For my friends.

Hailstorms presence beside her is a welcome one. The pale furred tom keeps her centered. When she feels his fur brush against hers she leans into the touch, bumping into him lightly. "I think you’d have to have bees in your brain to not be even a little nervous right now" she admits with a small laugh. Instinctively, she looks to ShadowClan, studying their faces. Were the marsh dwellers scared? She cannot tell. "Im glad you’re here too" and she is. There is no one else she would rather go on the journey with than Hailstorm.

⭒✧ Chalk fell into step with his clanmates, the flow of the crowd wreathing Four Trees like striations of marble. So many cats were unfamiliar to him, having never been to a gathering before. Being able to attend as a daylight warrior felt like a privilege, but the serious framing of his attendance dulled his curiosity somewhat. What’s more, he was the only daylight warrior to have volunteered to go on the journey and the pressure to represent the rank was not lost on him. Though not a kittypet, Chalk would likely be associated with them and the other clan’s distaste of that was something he was conscious of. The thought warped his tail briefly.

The shadow of the sickness did not go unfelt either, an ailing glaze stiffening spines and keeping tails low. Chalk offered a lofty ear to Orangeblossom’s instruction, compartmentalising Badgermoon and Curlewnose’s presence in Skyclan away. If he didn’t think of it, he wouldn’t be tempted to look for information on the topic. Windclanners weren’t a clan the tom wanted to interact with anyway, the tension between them and his clan fur-raising. With that in mind, the fawn cat flanked the clearing carefully, avoiding those with the scent of the moors.

A clowder of what he assumed to be Riverclanners nearby spoke amongst themselves, their river-smooth silhouettes drawing his eye. 'I wonder which of them is actually going'. The quiet voice must be discussing the journey. With no goodbyes to make, Chalk swerved to politely engage. "I’m going." A neutral stare was tossed down his nose to the tortie. "Are you?" The interrogative opened the tom’s expression a little, the act of questioning more familiar.

HE SAID, "WELL MY NAME'S JOHNNY, AND IT MIGHT BE A SIN
BUT I'LL TAKE YOUR BET, AND YOU'RE GONNA REGRET, CUZ IM THE BEST THERE'S EVER BEEN."

It'd been a while since Johnny had come to a gathering. Usually he was home most nights with his people, but there were always exceptions to that, times when he would have to break his own rules for the greater good. And to be frank, he'd been prepared to do just that when the journey had first been announced. It would have taken him away from twolegplace for a long time, but there were cats dying and politics in play that had the stocky tabby raring to go.

At first, Johnny had been frustrated to not be sent among the journeying cats despite his offer to go. The stocky bobtail had a lot to prove, but he wasn't so full of himself that he couldn't step back and understand why he was being kept back. Blazestar couldn't let every member of his council go, after all, and with the remaining groups being filled with mainly the sick, old, pregnant, and young, Johnyflame knew he could find just as much honor in staying back to protect them as he could going to bring back the cure.

"This is Fourtrees. The clans gather here every full moon to share news under Starclans watchful eye." Johnny informared his apprentice as he led them in among the other Skyclanners. This would be Glimmerpaws first time seeing all the clans gathered together, and he knew it would be an experience. "No cat is permitted to fight at a gathering, so best behavior, and mind what Orangeblossom said." he said, flashing the younger cat a look that said 'we're trusting you' before going to find a seat and keep an eye on things.

Scorchpaw is somber as she enters Fourtrees in a pack. Sootstar leads them all in, and there is a space at her side where Badgermoon used to pad; there is an outline of where a cat should fit, one with her own broad shoulders, one who had turned his back on her and the rest of her kin. The girl's wildfire face blazes with her ire; her reservoir gaze is deep and watery with mourning. Should other cats dare to look upon her, they may be affronted by the force of her glare. She has been chosen to make the perilous journey for the cure, but her mentor had not bothered to see her off, or her brother, or her mother– and so she forges her grief into anger. For as long as she is angry, she can keep putting one paw in front of the other.

The other clans hardly cross her mind until she sees Cherrypaw, all silk and fire opal. She remembers Bluepaw's dagger stare upon her, remembers the shock of the thought that talking with this girl is some sort of betrayal, and she departs her pack anyway. It's a gathering, after all (and, quietly, recklessly, she thinks that if Badgermoon can do it so flippantly, then so can she).

When she approaches, she does not smile, but her gaze lights with a curiosity she cannot name. "Hello again," Scorchpaw greets, whip-tail flicking behind her. Her fur is beautiful still. But she doesn't say as much, for she's certain Cherrypaw can read it in her gaze. Her mind flocks back to the reason she's here tonight, and she can't help but wonder.... "Are you leaving tonight, too?" Suddenly the idea of working with the other clans is not so unappealing.

Upon SkyClan’s entry to Fourtrees, Blazestar hears the low warning his deputy growls. He can feel the judgment sear his pelt still, and he forces himself to ignore it. Orangeblossom has challenged him when he’d permitted the WindClan prisoners guarded entry to their camp, and he knows the ginger-and-white she-cat hadn’t been the only one. He in many ways even agrees with her—would any one of them have been shown the same mercy? Doubtful. Highly doubtful.

Still, to kill them where they’d stood—to send them bleeding and lost into the abyss—it reeks of something the mad queen herself would have done. Blazestar could see the fear in their eyes, and although he’d wanted to stomp the pity out of his soft heart, he could not. He does not like harboring more of Sootstar’s refuse in his camp, but he had done the best he could think to do.

He distances himself from Orangeblossom and instead seeks softer company. Bobbie is on the outskirts, and he goes to her gladly. “Saying goodbye is the last thing I want to do,” he murmurs sadly in response. Bruise-blue eyes meet sage-green, and again he loses himself to the tenderness in her gaze. “I know you have to go.” He brushes his muzzle against the velvet of her ear this time. “I—

And then he freezes, because his half-lidded eyes catch a glimpse of a familiar ebony pelt. Her small figure is nearly dwarfed by the pale mountain of fur that sits close to her. Blazestar eyes Little Wolf, ears straining to catch clips of her conversation. She’s going too, he realizes with a start. His former mate, the mother of his children, will be risking her life in the mountains… Little Wolf and Bobbie could be lost.

But foolishly, his eyes linger on the cat beside Little Wolf. Their pelts practically brush from where he can see. And all of a sudden, he feels he is far too close to Bobbie for comfort. He clears his throat, backing away from her to put a respectable distance between them. They are not mates, he chides himself. They are friends, and Clan leader and warrior besides. “Your kits will recover safely while you are gone,” he assures Bobbie, a touch of formality crawling back into his tone.

Already, he feels out of place yet again. Smoke and ash figure only stands in the midst of the chaos, legs trembling. The walk here has been a blur, his mind a daze. Because - he's actually doing this. He is leaving - risking it all, knowing well that he may just die. Starclan loves to torment him, he thinks - first with loss and grief, then with visions, and now with this. To be told his feelings are returned only once he must leave. He doesn't want to die for windclan anymore, he just wants to go home.

But he can't.

All round him, others say there goodbyes, while he just sits there in silent solitude. Because there is not one cat amungst them who is here for him. No - they all wait back home, sick in their nests even after receiving herbs that were supposed to help, even as others fall ill without any remaining. The rest already lie buried - cold, unreachable in starclans claws. And so he simply stares at the stars, absent, and listens to the steady thump of his heart against it's cage in his chest.

He will go, because he must, and then he will come back - because he promised.

Familiarity with other clans could only ever be a temporary thing. And still, he grieves. His mind returns to the graves that they had dug and those already buried. His own aching chest had subsided quickly with treatment. Who had he doomed in his stead? Weaselclaw? Moorpaw?

A cool gust of breath floats from the newly named deputy's maw. Like some of the others, he does not approach. It is not out of disdain for them, or some misguided fear, but a quiet, respectful mourning. He stands as a witness to those who will risk their lives to save another's. What stands before them now is a strand of fate none could have woven before. Would StarClan follow them so far away from this home of theirs? What a long and terrible journey it would be. He can only hope that those they will lose return to their stars, and will dream with them once more in time.

——  a tall auburn tabby with thick fur and bright glacial eyes. sunstride is broad and bold– a creature standing above most of windclan, though not a beast beyond it, with fur that flames red and deepens to a burnt amber with every stripe. his eyes, in comparison, are a pale summer's blue, still as bold as the rest of them. he radiates confidence and self-assured authority.
