Trailing down passages that had filled the memories of their youth feels like wandering through a storybook. Child-like wonder tastes like the pines, joyous giggling mimicked in birdsong. Emerald eyes drift across the branches above, enamored in the sound of squirrel feet scuttling along the bark, the sound of the leaves rustling under their tiny weight and shifting with the breeze. A dream... a dream repeated several nights in their extended break, sought after sweetly and with nostalgia painfully scratching at the corners of their eyes. Relief settles over them to be here under the shade, tender paws sifting through the fallen needles on the ground, the prickle of sun-dried grass under-paw.
Their ears twitch suddenly, the soft voice of a friend filtering back into focus- visions of dappled cinnamon fur overtake the shape of Oddgleam and their heart flutters wildly with anxious guilt. 'Sorry, I guess I'm just tired.' They'd told her. They're still tired... nothing had changed but the silence of their nights. "She won't pick a new deputy," they ask, fragments and keywords piecing together half of what was said. Orangestar had certainly gotten up to a lot while Edenberry had been gone... "She didn't have trouble replacing Twitchbolt so what gives this time?"
The black and white cat doesn't really wait for an answer, knowing that the two of them can do nothing but speculate on the 'whys.' No theory would prove as satisfying as the real truth. Eyes sway like blades of grass as they snap towards the trees, an itch developing under their skin and growing more intense abruptly. "Feel up for a little friendly competition," the grin that spreads across their face admits to their energy and excitement, an artful mask in the way it deceives even them. "I could do with a warm up...."
How many months since they'd last caught something with their own two paws? Had the last time been for Raindrop...? Their lips falter in their smile for only half a moment, pressing aside the thought to stamp out their feelings with the distraction of words. "We could climb a tree... higher or faster, you choose which one wins!"
