THERE'S A PLACE OFF OCEAN AVENUE ✧ broken bridge

Although Stormpaw wants to protest and insist there must be a way around the river, she recognizes the need for the bridge. They could not waste more time. Rivers could run forever and their Clans were dying back at home. Owlear was dying. Stormpaw mustered her courage and brushed her pelt against her mother's as they joined Little Wolf to cross next.

A strangled mew comes from her throat when she sees her kin fall in. And despite Stormpaw's bravery, she hesitates and clings to the ground. Luckily one of the RiverClan cats had dived in to save her and Stormpaw releases her breath. The river-dwelling cats may be arrogant and hypocritical, but at the very least one of them had saved a member of her family. She supposed she could give them that at least. Her eyes drag and fall upon a darker RiverClan tabby about her age.

The tortoiseshell is sharp-tongued and mean, the dusky brown tabby is silent, and the rest of them are too old for Stormpaw to feel a connection to, so her gaze naturally falls on what she would know soon to be Mosspaw. She attempts a smile. And that is it, for now, as she follows Flamewhisker and Little Wolf across with bridge with no drastic disasters.

✿—— the tabby watches in silence as a plan is quickly formed and carried out, slightly stunned at the ease with which the riverclanners handle the water. at first the kittypet-hating thunderclanner, claws dug into the ground, refuses to swim; slate agrees, as does a dark-furred thunderclan warrior. the pale-furred cat - hailstorm, she recalls - watches in silence while her own clanmate adds to the discussion—chalk seems inclined towards going around like the other cats, and she's near to agreeing when the small ginger riverclanner chimes in with a suggestion. we'll make a path, he declares, and bobbie watches with amazement as he slips easily into the water and, slowly but surely, the other riverclanners begin to join him.

"yes, we - we will," she replies sofly, grateful for the comforting pressure of duskpool's tail as the conversation continues.

the group at large agrees, and bobbie nods her silent reply, watching as more and more riverclanners splash in: the standoffish tortie, a smoky blue warrior, a dusty-pelted younger warrior, a blue-gray she-cat, even the sharp-tongued tabby apprentice. quickly each clan's higher ranks begin to assert themselves, the brusque windclan calico taking charge of her own clanmates as orangeblossom delivers her own commands, bobbie nodding quickly again. and then, slowly but surely, cat after cat begins to cross - some on their own, some in small clumps of two or three.

the sole healer (if in training) makes it across safely, thank the stars, as does the risk-taking golden thunderclanner. the shadowclan deputy, smogmaw she thinks his name is, makes across and joins the thunderclanner in helping the riverclanners secure the bridge. slate makes his own graceless crossing, making her wince when he nearly tumbles in, and then—the grey-and-white thunderclanner is the first to fall, but just as quickly she's hauled out by the icy riverclan tortie. bobbie tilts her head, surprised that of all cats it would be her, but remains silent as periwinklebreeze makes his crossing successfully enough. the sharp-tongued thunderclanner with the dark pelt crosses, as does the other dark-furred one from earlier, and then chalk, and a gray-and-white shadowclanner.

bobbie shifts anxiously on her paws as the group on their side of the river dwindles—duskpool calls for a group but she's too caught up in thought to join his in time, swallowing hard as she watches him cross with a couple of windclan apprentices. orangeblossom and cherrypaw both make it alongside a strange windclan tortie and she exhales a quiet sigh of relief - that is, until one of the windclan apprentices takes a fall as well. another windclanner crosses, as do a few thunderclanners (including a small dark pelt she steadfastly ignores), and the ashen riverclanner rescues the fallen windclanner. a few more cats go until there's barely any cats left, and when she looks around she finds nobody who looks very willing to cross with her.

"i'll go," she rasps, dry-throated with anxiety, and steps forward. the bridge, for all the other cats' efforts, is taut but she does not feel remotely safe as she begins to take shaky steps from each damp board to the next. still, the sight of her clanmates gathering on the other side makes her keep putting paw before paw, her gaze fixed on them as she takes small, nervous steps, and though anxiety races through her veins, she really thinks she's going to make it.

that is, until her gaze catches on a different cat. a small one, dark-pelted, eyes the vivid green of a fruitful forest and pelt marked by scars. she remembers blazestar's muzzle pressed to her ear as easily as if it were only moments ago, remembers the way he'd jerked back as though she were poisonous to the touch, eyes bruise-blue and fixed over her shoulder—fixed on that small black-furred shape. her paws feel numb beneath her, remembering golden fur and distant eyes, and then suddenly she's falling, heart dark and aching.

the foaming river rises up to meet her, rushing into her nose and clogging her throat with water.

It was with fascination that Fernpaw watched the crossing cats, meandering along with fear a-glimmer in their eyes. It was strange how something that had been a safety-blanket for him could be so terrifying to cats of the other Clans; no wonder ThunderClan had skittered from the shoreline in the battle for Sunningrocks!

As Stormywing fell into the water, paws giving way, Fernpaw almost wanted to jeer- but he held himself steadfast, pulling tighter as Iciclefang split from the group to hurry and save her. His muscles bunched, wariness narrowing his gaze- but Stormywing seemed at least earnest, even as she was hauled out of the water by someone who she'd been squabbling with. He was at the very least glad that she didn't seem seriously hurt...

Another dropped then, a younger- Windclanner, he'd guess- and it was Hazecloud who split from them then, darting into the water and urging the tom to kick. Iciclefang and Hazecloud both voiced their annoyance, and Fernpaw couldn't really blame them- it didn't particularly occur to him that what was muscle-memory for a Riverclanner wasn't as easy for anyone else. A shimmering eye lingered upon the bridge as more and more cats tiptoed across it, distrust pulling their cautious steps- but one Skyclanner in particular caught his eye. Was she even looking where she was going? Her eyes lingered upon the other side of the bridge, fixated on the destination rather than her own steps- and that was to her detriment.

Another noisy clash burst through the air, clamour that instantly called him to action. Fernpaw surged forward, diving into the water after her. Beneath the surface he dived, boosting her body upwards and fastening his jaws around her scruff. They were both small cats- maybe an advantage in Fernpaw's case, as he could haul a slight frame better than a bulking one. "Got'cha!" he chirped breathlessly, muscles buzzing as he worked with the waves to bring her to shore. "Can you- k-kick for me?" His breath hitched; he could do most of the work, but a little help would stop them both from sinking like stones.

To the shoreline he sailed, pulling as if it would kill him to stop- it might kill her. Later he would surely feel accomplished, but at last his deeds were not for glory.

It’ll have to, a silver-coated RiverClanner tells him, her words quick, straight to a point he already knows. It’ll have to - of course, the river-dwellers’ plan will have to work. Greeneyes knows there isn’t time to waste, not with so many sick back home, not with such an important mission in front of them.

Still, he finds himself hesitating as he watches the RiverClanners execute their plan, as he watches fellow journey-goers go forward, paws moving across the held-up bridge. Wobbling, some. Falling, others - splashing straight into coursing waters for the river cats to pull back to land. Greeneyes already feels like he is swaying, and he has yet to step foot on the bridge in front of him.

He is too focused on the foaming rush in front of him to catch Bobbie’s gaze as she searches for someone to go with, to even see the older feline set off on the bridge. It’s when lilac splashes into the waves in front of Greeneyes that his focus is shaken, and he nearly shouts for his struggling clanmate. A mere gasp takes form instead and a breath is held as he watches orange fur dive for Bobbie - to pull her back to land, to safety, just as the others had been before her.

There’s not many left on his side of the river after Bobbie departs it, and the flame-furred warrior knows he can’t wait much longer or else he’ll be the one holding up the journey.

Another breath is taken, before he steps foot on the swaying two-leg bridge - a memory of stepping stones held beneath his paws as he marches forward. If he made that trip, then he could make this one too. Step after step, he keeps a wobbling balance, his heart pounding as he looks up at the gathering cats on the other side, the RiverClanners whose strength holds him up.

A paw slips, if only a little, but enough to nearly make his heart stop at the fright it gives him as it hits the cold current below him. Quickly, a wide-gazed Greeneyes pulls his river-soaked paw upwards to the safety of the bridge, trembling at the thought of nearly becoming another rescue mission for the RiverClanners. Greeneyes gives himself a moment to settle, to rebalance himself on the swinging bridge, before continuing forward.

Soon, his paws are able to meet grass again, secure in nature, rather than the river he’d nearly fallen into. Relief watches over him then, gratitude over his safe crossing rising as he peers over to assess those left to cross. Stars, he never wants to do that again.

: * — Among SkyClan's first born, Greeneyes is a bright tom with an affinity for the world around him. Despite always seeking to be kind to others, the warrior believes he's cursed - a belief brought on by rhetoric that green is a deadly color.

✿ | she has no interest in learning how to swim, and she prays she will never touch a river with more than her paws again after this. foaming riverwater clogs her throat and nose, and when she breaks the surface her gasps yield little before she bobs below again. fear overtakes her as the water swells in her chest and she must wonder—is this how she dies, really?

of course, this thought runs its course when only a heartbeat later, something lifts her desperately gasping head above the water and she feels teeth locking in her once-fluffy, now-drenched scruff as a voice chirps, "got'cha!" though her mind is a frenzied buzz, she begins to kick her hind legs upon his request, putting sore muscles to work as she inhales sweet, sweet air clotted with foam. mostly she feels like a limp ragdoll in the current, though, for all her desperately working legs.

the small ginger tabby drags her to shore fast as an adder, and the moment bobbie's able to touch the bliss of solid ground she drags herself onto it, hacking and gasping sweet air. later she would remember to say thank you, but for now she simply half-lies there and tries to ignore her chilly, drenched pelt and aching lungs in favor of devouring the glory of air.

Duskpool nearly dove in himself to fetch the WindClan apprentice, shouting out a “Damnit, kid!” He would have sunk, but damnit, the scarred warrior would have, muscles straining to keep himself from being a victim to the frigid waters that sloshed against his paws. His mangled ear flattened, listening to the panicked calls of Milkpaw’s clanmates to Hazecloud’s appearance, shooting forward to rescue the flailing apprentice. He breathed in relief, if only slightly while making his way across without an incident, massive paws meeting land.

He scowled, staring at the river with disdain, gaze snapping to watch Milkpaw. “You alright, kid?” He rumbled, staring at the other’s sopping-wet form. “Thought I told ya to keep away from the sides.” He grunted, tone deadpan.

/ interacting with @milkpaw sorry for the random notif everyone ! wanted to get one out for plot purposes lol
thought speech

It all happened too fast. Barely able to keep his head above water, the second he did he heard his clanmates cry for someone to get him, to save him, then all over again his ears nose and lungs were filled with water that burned.

His muscles from thrashing and from their journey already began to make him feel more sore than before.

And for a slim second, he wanted to give up. Just let the waters take him. To let Starclan wrap their paws around him and carry him off. And for a second, his body was going limp.

But the journey has just begun for the boy, and he felt someone's teeth grip his scruff. It sent a wave of adrenaline through him as they broke the surface of the water.

Everything seemed groggy, but his saviours voice was yelling to kick, and so he would. His back legs would pedal, and as they reached the shore line, he let his body fall into the dirt. Water coughed up and out onto the dirt, and his paws gripped tightly against the surface as if he could get washed away. "Thank you," he muttered softly to the riverclanner.

He'd look up to Hazecloud, and back at his clanmates. Those who crossed successfully, and those who had not yet made it across. There was a frustration that crossed through him, that he needed a riverclanners help to save him. So of course, as Duskpool came to confront him and tell him what he said, Milkpaw would use him as an outlet. "I tried to! Your weight shook the entire bridge! Maybe lay off the kittypet food, and that wouldn't have happened," he huffed.

Nothing was going right and even though it wasn't true it seemed like everyone was falling in, and Mouseflight couldn't help but wonder if the RiverClanners were somehow doing it on purpose. Obviously they wouldn't want the cats coming with them and stealing on the glory, so the swimming cats had planned to drown everyone so they could be the only ones to return home.

Well Mouseflight wasn't going to let that happen to him. He'd cross and be fine and there would be no more falling in. He wouldn't even get a single drop of water on him - that was the plan anyway. Walking forward close to others the tunneler dug his claws the best he could into the wood, swallowing once as he looked below him and saw the water rushing by. Ears flattened for a moment before he continued on. Any shaking that could be seen he'd deny it was him - the bridge was shaky itself after all.

A quick sigh of relief came from the feline's maw as he saw the other side, picking up his pace he jumped off the bridge and turned around, quickly licking down the chest fur that had threatened to rise off his skin.
