“Hush now, we have clanmates trying to sleep. ” Roeflame’s tone is firm but warm as she’d let kittens trail on her heels, venturing out past the mouth of the nursery.
Between the losses caused by the wolves, Flycatchers sudden death, and her daughters near-death experience, Roeflame had been navigating through many sleepless nights.
Normally, her kits go down for the night easily enough, but there was an inexplicable shift in the nursery tonight, and in a last-ditch attempt at keeping herself from ripping her fur out, the tabby queen decided that tonight was perfectly clear enough to let the kits star-gaze for awhile.
Roeflame had made it an open invitation, on the one condition that any kittens who weren’t her own had permission from their mothers first, and as the group would trickle outside of the nursery, Roeflame would settle onto her stomach, tail whisking to and fro against the ground.
“Alright, now look up and tell me what you see- quietly.” Bothering slumbering warriors was not on Roeflame’s to-do list this evening.
When the kits would begin to shift rounded eyes skyward, Roeflame would follow in suit, ebony pupils suddenly bursting with the reflection of dazzling stars, glowing fragments scattered across a cobalt sky.

Dovekit felt lucky that it was their own mother who had come up with the idea to look at up at the sky tonight, for they were sure if they were someone else's kit they wouldn't be given permission to do so, especially not after trying to bite Gentlestorm to wake him up. Though maw was already closed, the mention of being quiet caused the little lynx point to bite down on their own teeth, keeping maw snapped shut tightly as the group of kittens carefully tiptoed into camp before watching as their mother lie down and quickly they would do the same.

Pressed against Roeflame's side they watched the other kittens for a moment before the queen spoke once more and ears would flick and swivel for just a moment before head craned up then immediately back down as a small frustrated huff came from the kit before they flipped over onto their back to get a better view - without the weird neck pain. The stars twinkle above them and quietly the kitten reached up, paws outstretched for just a moment before "Bugs... little bugs. Lots of 'em." As quiet as a kit could be they'd speak out the answer to the question that had been asked. Of course Dovekit knew of StarClan, but it didn't yet click that these "bugs" were the stars where their ancestors got their name.

Tigerfang had suffered too many sleepless nights to not appreciate being able to laze her days away now. Still, the elder could appreciate the virtues of late nights. Kits in particular would benefit from knowing the peace of eventide early on. Heavens strike her down, but she couldn't remember if she and Meadowsong had been able to take their kits out like this in the midnight, safely ensconsced between ThunderClan's bramble and soldiers.

She lies on the outskirts of the kitten crowd, her tail curled around one or two of them, or a member of her own family. A growling chuckle escapes her at Dovekit's guess. "Ain't bugs. Jus'stars. Bugs wish they could fly that high," she rumbles. "Some use stars t'find their back if they lost, but aye, takes lotsa starin' at 'em t'be sure." Salt-blue eyes peer up towards them, a weathered, narrow mirror of the kittens' wide gazes. Somewhere, the trees of her birthplace stretched towards these same stars, their withering heads poking out of the ruined land.

Her gentle golden gaze rests on Roeflame and the kittens, plump body curled against Tigerfang’s side. Magnoliasong recalls introducing many of her brood to the wonders of the heavens - the star speckled skies that stretched farther than the imagination. Kitten curiosity never failed to warm the former permaqueen’s heart.

“Tigerfang’s right. Those are stars. Lots of them… maybe even more than the bugs and trees of ThunderClan combined,” Magnoliasong muses with a chuckle, resting her cheek against her mate at she glances skyward for a moment. The stars certainly shine bright tonight. StarClan must be blessing them on this very night after the pain they’ve all endured the prior moons. “Once upon a time we used the stars to guide us here. Long ago when we crossed unfamiliar land until we found and helped make ThunderClan our home,” the elder adds warmly. It’s all too easy to reminisce on a night like this.

Tornadokit was infatuated with the silverpelt above, the stars were beautiful. Even if it was kinda creepy to think that a buncha dead cats were always looking down on him whenever it was night. He hopes they think he’s as cute and cool as he believes he is. He’d padded his way up to the stargazing pile coming close to Roeflame before plopping down in a loaf. He’d been just behind the other kits who’d followed her out. Tornadokit had just gotten distracted staring up at the sky while he padded over, double tasking was not his strong suit!

His ears perk and his head tilts to the side at the question posed, there were a lot of answers he can give. Bright lights, Dead cats lookin down, but bugs - bugs was not what he would’ve thought of. He starts to giggle loudly before his paw comes over his muzzle to muffle the sound, how silly! He manages to choke down his laughter as the gruff yet softened tones of Tigerfang spoke, he always liked the elders they had lots of stories to tell and they were easy to get extra food from if he knew just the right words to say. His attention is grasped so easily by her and Magnoliasong, using the stars to find your way around he didn’t think that was a thing. Would he have to use them when he was an apprentice? He hopes not he wouldn’t even know which one to focus on! There were so so many.

"Wow! I bet some of these stars didn’t even exist yet when you used em’ to get here!" he wasn’t trying to be rude it was just elder to him meant ancient.

"Hey, you don't know if they're all stars." Campionsong's flippant tone breezed through the soft sanctity of a shared moment, as the tabby-patterned warrior wove through the shadows to reveal a pelt almost as starry as the night sky itself. Easy smile, like a crescent claw of a bright moon, flooded argent features and angular face. "Maybe Silverpelt's got a flea infestation." He chuckled as he settled just besides Tigerfang and Magnoliasong, sterling gaze settling on his two mothers before darting towards the grand beauty that the cats beheld. His kind had always prayed to the sun, though he figured that the great sun was simply a star bigger and more blazing than most. They had always had a guiding hand set upon the skies, and the poet found no difference between those of the sea and those of the oaks. Seeing Tornadokit and Dovekit did not quell his hummingbird heart, however, though calm tail and purl-fraught fur did not display any of his anxieties. Soon, his own kits would be born. Would they love him just the same as they loved his own parents?

It is strange how quickly he had grown to become accustomed to his mates presence in the nest that they had shared. How, since she had moved to the nursery, he noticed the absence like a gaping wall of ice. Their nest felt too big when it was just him in it, when silver did not brush against black like stars in the night sky. He tossed and he turned in that waning cavern until finally he accepted the fact that he likely was not going to sleep well tonight and headed out into camp in order to get some fresh air. There, he is greeted with a sight like no other.

It practically knocks the wind out of him, seeing his mate and his kit sat next to each other, their pale fur glowing in the soft starlight. His family. If he could take a picture of this moment and live inside of it forever he would but he only lingers silently for a moment longer before his shadowed paws propel him forward, eager to press his nose to the top of Dovekit's head, chuckling softly at the kits comparison. Others offer their explanations though, and he nods appreciatively at Magnoliasong. Perhaps sometime he should ask her about her journey. Perhaps sometime he should ask her about his mother. He always liked hearing stories of Little Wolf from the time before he had been born. It made him feel closer to her.

He tries not to laugh when Tornadokit implies that Magnoliasong is older than the stars themselves but he can't help himself, a snort escapes his nostrils despite his best attempts and he moves so that he is pressed against Roeflame, black tail reaching out to entwine with hers as he tilts his head upwards to also look at the stars. "Do you think StarClan has any mouse-bile?" he offers good naturedly in response to Campionsong's comment about fleas. "That would be something wouldn't it? Apprentices in StarClan perpetually stuck picking fleas and ticks off of elders." his whiskers twitch in amusement at the thought of his sister up there doing something like that, though he had no doubt she wouldn't mind. Not if the elders shared some good stories in return.
