what was I thinking [ RIVER ]

〕She wasn't sure what brought her to the side of the river. Perhaps it was the heat, or perhaps it was her paws just wanting to go to the farthest reach of the territory. Being cooped up for moons had left her restless, and each chance she got, she was out in the forest. Green eyes glance across the body of water, expecting a Riverclan patrol to appear any moment now, but for now it seemed she was by herself. That was fine with her though...she didn't want her day ruined by Riverclan anyways.

The tabby sat down, looking at her reflection in the water. She poked a toe in its water, and quickly pulled it back out. The water was cold, and it seemed to be moving quickly today. Why do they swim in there? She had only been in the water once, and it had been against her will. The darkness that pulled her deeper and deeper, the currents that threw her around like a feather in the wind...it was not something she wished to experience ever again. She hadn't expected to ever get the reek of fish out of her pelt after that.

Hesitantly, Flamewhisker leaned down and took a couple of laps of the water before moving away from its shore. The last thing she wanted to do was accidentally fall in...she had escaped its grasp once, a second time would be surely be pushing her luck.

a longhaired red tabby with low white and green eyes. flamewhisker's fur is a vibrant hue of red, riddled with thick classic tabby markings. her fur is medium in length, and she has a large, feathery tail. her chest, belly, tail tip, and her paws are dipped white. flamewhisker's eyes are a dark, deep shade of green. her shoulder has a large scar on it from a fight with a dog. she also has a shredded ear from a disagreement with a loner during her time alone before joining thunderclan. on particularly cold days, or sometimes before a major weather change, she will walk with a slight limp from her shoulder injury.

BLACKBIRD. WHO STOPS AT THE SALT LAKE TO DRINK, THEN BURDENS ON THE DIRT? ☾ 𓅫
𓃦𓃥 ﹏ ”watch your step, i’d not like to go in after you should you slip,” her voice sounds out from behind flamewhisker, approaching her side and leaning down to take a couple sips from the water herself. it sits cold on her tongue. much like many other thunderclan cats, she doesn’t like to imagine submerging herself in it. the cold of the rain already forced her pelt to cling to her body, forcing her to look scrawny and making it all around insufferable to tolerate. the sheer thought of dipping her paws in and feeling the current tug at her fur sends an uncomfortable shudder down her spine.

blackbird likes to think that should flamewhisker lose her footing, she’d stay rooted in dry land and hope for the best. perhaps a long stick could fish her out like she’s seen twolegs do to fish along the river. she wasn’t afraid of the water, but the current twisting and churning and tugging at her reflection alone almost feels as if it’s going to pull it away and take her along with it. the girl shudders, raising up from the waterside and licking her lips dry from her drink. (she supposes she wasn’t that heartless to actually allow their deputy to drown in the currents. after all, it wasn’t like the deputy had the best experience already. it would be rather cruel to allow her to fight and flail and splash around out of her own disdain for uncomfort.)

amidst her thoughts, for a good moment blackbird decides to sit in silence, passing little more word than the simple acknowledgement of flamewhisker’s presence. but she supposes that she should offer a further curtesy to the deputy… she was intruding on private time, after all. ”what brings you? i doubt you’re just thirsty.” one could say the same for her herself. blackbird chooses not to linger on the implication.

. ° ✦ Now whenever Bravepaw passed by the rivers edge, he thought of his friend on the other side. Turtlepaw, the scruffy grey molly from the riverside, named after a strange lizard with a den on its back... He still didn't quite understand the visual about all that.

But since their last chat he hadn't been as wary around the water like before. In their method of long-distance play he had fallen off the banks, fur weighing double as it became soaked but the whirlwinding current had been more of a thrilling fun than scary experience, but he had promised not to venture into the depths again until he was more practiced.

"I'll save you if that happens!" Bravepaw proudly stated as he hopped out from the brush and onto one of the many stones lining the bank. He straightened his back to look taller, fluffy tail whipping behind him. But his manner of ego quickly fell as he remembered his manners. "Oh, uh, hi Miss Flamewhisker, Miss Blackbird! How goes the hunting out here?"

  • BRAVEPAW — HE/HIM ・ 10 MOONS ・ THUNDERCLAN & APPRENTICE ・ PENNED BY beatae!
A Longhaired chocolate tabby with a white locket and deep blue eyes. Very thick coat that has started to grow into long, wispy curls. Developing into an awkward stage of kitten uglies as the rest of his body grows and changes. Severe scars from owl talons stretch across his shoulders and another that starts from his back down his left thigh.

It might as well be ironic for a forest-dweller to consistently seek the coolness that a river offers — as easy as it is to insult RiverClanners for their fish-breath and obnoxiously graceful way of carrying themselves, Doespring cannot deny the advantages of their territory. Not here, anyway, where ThunderClan's stream is dotted with soft shadows from the canopy, gentle breeze keeping the green-leaf heat at moderate bay. It is a desperate necessity for as thick of a fur as hers.

Tufted ears twitch, attention quickly grabbed by Clanmates nearby. Flamewhisker first; it's always good to see the deputy out and about instead of cooped up and miserable. Soon enough there won't be another need for a stand-in.

With both Blackbird and Bravepaw acting as further company, Doespring takes a moment to simply listen, whiskers gliding across the surface of the water while she drinks. Gray blurs along the gentle, self-created ripples, but she pays her own reflection no mind. "Only hunting for solace, I assume," she calls from the bank, finally addressing the trio. "Any success?"

〕Her eyes widened slightly when the voice behind her took her off guard. For the past six moons she had always been able to tell when she was being snuck up on...kits weren't exactly sneaky, no matter how hard they tried. Her guard had been lowered a bit too much apparently, a mistake she was grateful to have caught now and not later when it could be life and death. "Been there, done that once already...don't worry, I don't plan on doing that again." Her tone was light, but the claws that waited at the edge of their sheath whenever she leaned down to take a drink was enough to suggest she had no intentions of making a wrong step. The time she had spent in the river had not been on her own accord, but even before then she wouldn't willingly ever get anything other than her paws wet. But then again, splashing in puddles was much different than the deep, roaring trench in front of them.

She leaned back into a sit, watching the water splash against the shore. "I suppose I just needed a long walk. I haven't been out here since the end of leafbare." It had only been a couple days since she had returned to her duties, but she was determined to start building her stamina back up. A bush rustles beside them, and Bravepaw hops out, declaring he would save her if she fell in. "Nobody will be falling in today." She reassured him, shaking her head slowly. She could picture his father, smiling down upon him in his act of bravery. He's just like you, Batwing.

A splash of water erupted over the shore, and soaked her foot. She lifted it up and shook it a few times, before moving several more paw steps away from the edge. "Well, that's enough of that for today." The last thing she wanted to do was smell like fish. Doespring, who had been drinking nearby, and Bravepaw both asked about how hunting had been. "I was planning on hunting on my way back, though, it doesn't take much to outrun me now. I haven't hunted anything besides trouble making kits for moons! You should've seen me yesterday, I looked like an apprentice on their first hunting trip. That squirrel is probably still laughing at me."

Raccoonstripe takes a taste of the riverwater, flinching at the fishy undertones that remind him a little too much of their water-dwelling neighbors across the border. Doespring, Blackbird, and Bravepaw lurk nearby, taking their turns to quench their thirst and take some reprieve from the hot sun. The flame-colored deputy's gaze is haunted as she watches the water's waves, but she turns cheekily enough to address her Clanmates.

The tabby watches her, remembering her plunge into watery depths, remembering the cat who'd shoved her in. Just like I remember my claws cleaving into that tortoiseshell's eye. Lakemoon's mate. A shudder threatens to rip through his pelt, but he suppresses it. Instead, he urges himself to smile in Flamewhisker's direction. "Don't listen to her. Not one cat in ThunderClan is outhunting this cat, no matter how many moons it's been since she's been in the nursery!" He flicks his tail tip, as if to dismiss the thoughts that plague him.

The curiosities of nature often held a spell over Adderpaw, tempting him with their endless unanswered questions like a mouse being dangled above his head by the tail, just a nip away. It brought him a peace, comfort to the empty pit that had called his heart home since the realization of his family's soft distain towards him. Of course, predators such as the wolves that had attacked moons ago by now were still a threat to the weak soul, but he had built up enough courage to believe that he could protect his clan in the future.

Although, the tabby cat could consider the river to be that of a predator to the frail stature of a scrawny boy with exuberant tail tucked between his legs. He did not dare to venture too far close to its lapping waves against soil and rock. Instead, observing from the spotted shadows of the overgrowth while grazing his hind leg with his tongue, which was stuck up in the air with no care for the light chatting between clanmates. Leafhusk had brought him out here for a refresher on the meaning of the borders for the clans, their importance and how to mark them. He was nearing the end of his apprenticeship, and he knew Leafhusk wanted the tom to be extra overprepared for his entrance into warrior — hood so the refreshers seemed to be a necessity for the lead warrior to calm her nerves. He couldn't say that he blamed her.

Twitching ears a few times with aggression to shake the fly that had began to buzz around him, he raised his brow with a quizzical expression piercing his usual stoic nature. "Well why d'ya go in the first time?" Adderpaw asked with a cocked head, swirling fur resting his his chest with innocence gleaming in his golden hues. It was a true reflection of his feelings, still unaware of there being a 'right place and right time' when it came to questions, or that sometimes there were some social cues that indicated a topic did not want to be discussed further. He just couldn't understand why a ThunderClanner would ever want to place their paws in water that wasn't wading height. Pausing, he glanced to Leafhusk before offering: "Uhh, would ya want company?" Towards Flamewhisker's mention of hunting on the way back. Maybe he could get a few lessons from the deputy! Unless Leafhusk decided to say they were going to continue on their own, which would be a bummer. Or Flamewhisker said no. There were many options that occupied his attention while spacing out waiting for her reply.

an apprentice of thunderclan, adderpaw is one of the oldest in his rank at ten moons. he is being mentored by leafhusk, and is on track to graduate as a warrior later than his peers. displays a similar looking pattern to the adder snake, with a reddish-brown coat sporting splatters of white to compliment dark tones. often smells of fresh soil & musky wood.
