I FEEL LIKE AN ASTRONAUT IN THE OCEAN
The idea of a mentor wasn't entirely new to Quillpaw. While his father hadn't called himself as such, the tom had definitely acted the role of teacher in the young cats life. Of course, the black and gray tom couldn't say he'd enjoyed the lessons all that much. His father had been a harsh and impatient cat, and they'd spent more of their time arguing than they had learning anything from each other. Still, he knew a bit. He'd been able to hunt mice and sparrows in twoleg place and new a bit about fighting, even if said knowledge had never been formally taught to him.
He wasn't sure exactly what it was wild cats taught each other though, or just how much they expected from him. Quill wasn't above putting in the work required to live in this place, but he would never have the ambition to be anything more than your average warrior for the clan. And so if his mentor was expecting an energetic, raring to go youth to soak up every scrap of wisdom they were hoping to depart, they'd probably find themselves disappointed with Quill. Even when invested in something his expression tended to range from 'disinterested' to 'annoyed as hell', so not only was it hard to get a read on him at any given point, but he wasn't really the cheery or talkative type with cats he didn't know well.
Still, at the young tom awoke that morning he waited near the entrance for Torchthroat to meet him. They were supposed to be going out to properly begin his apprenticeship that day, and while most apprenticed would have probably been thrumming with excitement, Quill sat at the bramble entrance silent and still, just waiting to get things over with.
