"Ah, thank you! How'd you know perch is my favorite?" Hazecloud hummed as she delicately took the fish offered to her and placed it down before herself and the waiting maws of a few other kittens. She never did mind sharing her meals with the other kittens, even those not entirely in her care. Such a habit had formed so many moons ago now that taking an entire fish for herself didn't quite feel right anymore.

"Have any of you descaled a fish before? I can show you." With careful, practiced movement the silvery queen sliced through prickly green scales to expose the flesh underneath. She gave pause to allow them their own attempts, patiently guiding fox-tooth claws until enough had been shaved away to eat. There was something strange about this fish, though. As she nosed closer there was an underlying scent, but not so easily identifiable. It was certainly coming from the prey, however, and with a quick flick of her claws she opened the fishes belly to reveal its contents, and her teeth snapped shut from the initial surprise.

"Wait!" She shouted, spinning her head to the other queens. "The fish- something's not right with them. Open them up, this one's... ruined." Those damned twolegs, stomping out the fires of joy that a simple perch could give. Such cruelty.

"A-anytime!" Foxtail mews with a swish of his bushy tail, a light smile across his maw. He made sure there was enough prey to go around for the other queens, and of course kits that are weaned off their mother's milk. It was important that queens & kits, along with the clan's elders, get fed first. His belly quietly rumbles, but he tries to ignore it for now. He'll grab himself something once it's his turn. "I just m-made a guess, that's all!" He replies, hoping that the perch is tasty. It wasn't caught too long ago... it's pretty fresh. Foxtail would remember, as he swiped it out of the river today.

He lightly smiles at Hazecloud offering to teach her fellow queens and their kits how to descale a fish; he watches along, but lets his other clanmates make their own attempts at it. He'll definitely have to practice that later when it's his turn to grab something from the freshkill pile. He tilts his head slightly as Hazecloud sniffs the flesh exposed fish.... did she smell something on it— or in it— that he didn't pick up on earlier? His nose twitches for any unfamiliar scent, but before he gets to make a conclusion, Hazecloud slices the fish's belly open with her claws. ...And his eyes widen at what spills out with it's guts.

She shouts at her fellow queens in alarm, and Foxtail's nose twitches again. He crouches down to give the fish a smell... and he recoils at the stench that invades his nostrils. "....I don't know how I missed that scent on it," He frowns at the sight of the twoleg trash that was inside the fish's stomach a moment ago. As they were instructed not to eat the fish, Foxtail pulls a trout over with his paw, and with the slice of a single claw, clear garbage spills out onto the soft earthly floor. "StarClan, this one too!" He grumbles with flattened ears, with a shake of his head. Twolegs seem to be such careless creatures. They invade clan territory, harm/steal cats, and make a mess of things. And fish are eating their garbage! How much more sad can that get? He looks back over to Hazecloud, his tail swishing nervously. "D-do you want me to grab you guys something else?"

જ➶ The strange smell emanating from the fresh kill pile is what brings her over. The idea to get something to snack on hanging on her mind but she also needs to go hunting as well. If she eats now she will want to nap and so she decides to go for something small and not heavy for her stomach. Yet as she steps closer she hears Hazecloud and tilts her head. Showing the kits how to descale a fish. Her own father had showed her that trick. But that isn't what she is interested in. It's what happends next. Cutting open the fish twoleg garbage spills from the burst stomach and her own muzzle curls up in disdain. "Who brought these back?" It is obviously their fault and then she turns around and Foxtail mutters about not understanding how he missed that scent. Breaking open another fish and the same results.

"Do we have to check all of them?" Annoyance clear in her voice as she looks at the fish pile that might have more garbage filled fish in it. Slowly she approaches and sniffs before pulling out a small fish, pressing at it before looking toward Foxtail. She is clearly blaming him for the mistake but is more curious on how he will handle it.

"Perch's your favorite?" Eveningkit asks, eyes glued to the striped body of fish and taking a mental note for later. She herself is rarely picky, and is glad for whatever fish she gets to eat, but remembering which one Hazecloud fancies could be useful for the future. Either for winning her heart over when Eveningkit really wants something (doubtful, but worth a try), or when she just wants to brighten her mama's day.

She is laying sideways when Foxtail presents them all with a catch of his own, or so she assumes it's his, and purrs radiate from her as Hazecloud demonstrates something new. It takes a few tries for Eveningkit to get it right once she's done watching and switches into action; first she doesn't push down enough with her claws to get the scales off, and then she pushes too much and gets something stuck between her claws, but she does get into the hang of it after trial and error.

The need to yowl in triumph is there, but Hazecloud warns her to stop. Both her and Foxtail gasp in alarm when things that should not be inside a fish start spilling out onto the ground.

"Eeeww! Gross!" Before Eveningkit even realizes what it all is, the stench all but slaps her across the face. Lips pull back to reveal tiny teeth in her disgust as she steps backwards... a safe distance. "You mean Twolegs put these into the fish? That's even more gross." Twolegs are already a scary concept shrouded in mystery, but they get more and more frightening with each new bit of info she receives. How can some cats willingly live with them if they do this to fish- fish with their stupid face and bulging eyes and always-moving mouths?

Robinheart struggles to name fish as her favorite prey anymore. Brookstorm used to bring her a freshly caught fish each day she was laid up in the nursery, heavy with kits. If the curled eared molly still walked among them rather than the stars above Robinheart is certain she'd still provide for their little family. But that is not the case. And there is no joy in receiving a fish from her clan mate.

The tortoiseshell stares at the carp in front of her and idly flicks her ear at Hazecloud's instructions. She wishes she could be as excited over her prey as the older queen. With an unsheathed claw she follows each direction, messing up here and there as thorn-like kitten claws knead at her belly. She may not be fond of fish now but she knows she must eat. Her children depend on her, need her to make milk for them so they can grow into strong RiverClanners.

'Wait!'

Citrine eyes snap up from the carp and focus on Hazecloud as the queen slices open her perch to reveal twoleg garbage. Disgust is painted across every face, deepening as Foxtail creates an incision in a fresh trout and finds the same trash filling its belly. Robinheart glances back at her carp and runs her sharpened claw across firm belly, flaying the fish and bringing light to unnatural bits and bobs in its stomach. "Three for three… it would be smart to check every fish from now on," she murmurs to Midnightpaw as she pushes the ruined carp away from her - away from kits who are susceptible to illness or injury from the twoleg recklessness.

Foxtail offers to grab something different for them and while her appetite (as low as it is) is ruined, the mottled queen knows she has to eat. "Perhaps a mouse? O-Or anything other than fish, please," she inquires, airing on the side of caution. Anything not from the river should be less likely to be contaminated.

"FATE IS A SUNDRESS" ˚୭ .ೃ⁀➷ tags ── DIZZYPAW FINDS SOMETHING curious in the illegible words of the little group gathered around hazecloud. not a gossip by nature, she finds it easier to approach and push her nose into goings-on: and here she is. chatter about favorite fish swirls around her and dizzypaw rests comfortably on the thought that she enjoys large fish - something about the way they move under the water, the way the sun shimmers on their scales. she's impartial to taste, and aesthetics are all that matter.

not that anything really matters when a claw neatly slices one open for twoleg filth to spill forth. dizzypaw wishes she could find any sort of silver lining here, but it's hard. further do her clanmates work away at what they have - and all are successful in returning litter.

dizzypaw doesn't want to move to complete a request not made of her, so she sits and feels awkwardly out of place. "i'm sorry, ma'am's," she offers in solidarity to the queens. dizzypaw tries to look at each in turn with a sympathetic expression - she wishes she could do more. she'll just have to remember to ask her mentor to better guide her in catching other types of prey.

There is commotion over by the prey pile and they aren't quite sure what's wrong at first. They see Hazecloud bristle and say something but theyre too far away to be for certain. So they get up from their spot outside the apprentices' den to head on over with curiosity in mismatched eyes. Though then distaste runs through their gaze as the fish is cut open and trash spills from its insides. Then another one the same, and they furrowed their brow with haste. Why would they do this to fish?

Midnightpaw asks if they have to check all of them while Foxtail offers to get them different prey for who was the unfortunate victim of picking up the fish. Magpiepaw shook their head slightly as they didnt want to have to go around cutting open fish to find out if trash is in them. They glance to their ginger and black friend idly and then o Dizzypaw as they apologize for what happened. It wasn't their fault was it?

Magpiepaw had been fishing but they swore their fish hadnt been rancid. Was it and they just hadnt realized it? They felt a smidge of guilt stripe through their heart and they looked down at their paws for a moment, "Its an honest mistake, we couldn't have known" They speak to Dizzypaw assuringly and then looked to Midnightpaw before to Foxtail awaiting instruction of what to do next with these fish. Where they going through the prey pile? What if it was more than just fish?

"Speech"

Of A Monster

Horizonkit squats next to Eveningkit and their mother, his tongue primed and ready for the taste test. Foxtail, he now knows the brown-and-ginger stranger to be called, seems to visit the nursery a lot. The mackerel-striped kitten therefore doesn't find his presence too offensive as he lingers close by, hazel eyes settled on the big perch with the rest of them.

"I haven't," he quietly says when Hazecloud asks if they've ever descaled a fish. Watching her now, he doesn't think it could be that hard. Eveningkit leans in to join, but the tomkit hangs back for a little while, preferring the peace of watching to doing for the moment.

"Wait!" "Eww!" Small ears snap back, eyes flaring wide with alarm. "Huh?" The fish's insides don't look how they usually do, but it wasn't that gross. The foreign smell singes his nose though, and his slender face wrinkles slightly as he steps closer to peer at it. "Wow, that's a bad fish," he softly declares, as he thinks their other mother would have him.

Still, a part of him remains curious, despite the smell and reaction. A small, white-dipped paw slowly reaches for the crinkly stuff when an unfamiliar voice joins. And another. And another. Robinheart and the other kits he recognizes, but the three others are unrecognizable and crowding. Horizonkit shrinks back, irritation re-flattening his ears. "I'm hungry," he laments.

Shimmerkit wedges herself next to the forms of Eveningkit and Horizonkit, ironically looking as though she might pass for one of their littermates as opposed to an unrelated kitten. She hadn't meant to stumble over but that perch just looked too delicious! Shimmerkit is sure that Hazecloud doesn't mind her being here at least, the other queen is usually quite kind enough to her and probably wouldn't shoo her away.

When Hazecloud asks if any of the kits gathered had descaled a fish before, Shimmerkit nods. "I have!" She responds cheerfully. She conveniently leaves out the fact that she did such a poor job at it that her parents hadn't let her try again. Since she had technically already done so before, Shimmerkit does not join in immediately but watches intently as Hazecloud and the other nursery kits do so. She is about to take her turn when suddenly they are told to wait. Shimmerkit pulls back in confusion and then looks around even more confused when other cats approach, and the food is declared ruined. Shimmerkit didn't really understand why it was bad but she could certainly smell how bad it was up close.

Sensing that the meal was ruined for now, Lanvendersong approached to try and shoo her daughter away, but Shimmerkit was stubborn and would not move. "I'm hungry!" She protests softly, adding her voice to Horizonkit's lament. "Can't we just get more fish?"

—————————————————————⊰✿⊱————————————————————
One by one scales tear and grey-white flesh is ripped open to reveal not only her precious perch was wasted. A cloud of emotions stirred in the molly's chest- disappointment that twolegs could stoop to polluting their prey. Anger that the hard work of her warriors and apprentices was proven fruitless in a few strikes. Fear for what that could mean for their number of kits eating solid prey, and elders awaiting their meals with even more sensitive bellies.

"Anything from land, yes. Birds, mice, voles. I'd take on breaking a crab's shell, even. But yes, we should check every fish from now on, hopefully not all are like this." The emphasis of her word is followed with a sad glower to the fish Foxtail had given her, sighing tiredly. Now she must answer to the sudden fall of their excitement. "This is no cats fault, everyone has been doing their best." She reassured the apprentices, even if Midnightpaw was searching more for blame.

"The fish may have eaten what they found in the water. Like when Pinekit found that strange claw, some things are small enough for the fish to believe it's food." She had never spotted a twoleg purposefully using their foreign tools to place inside fish before, hopefully there was nothing truly that sinister happening. To Horizonkit and Shimmerkit, she does her best to comfort their complaints. "It's going to be okay, you'll see! Maybe Lichenstar will bring a nice big bird for you all to try. Then she can show you how to take out the feathers."

If it's not one thing, it's another. truthfully, Frecklepaw can't help but feel disheartened by it all - it seems as though not a single thing in their lives remains untouched by twolegs. Nothing is safe or sacred, not with the beasts ambling about and making a mess of everything in their path. Stomach churns as she shoves her way over to join the crowd, pushing herself into Magpiepaws flank as though doing so might swallow her whole, might make this... this... all of this go away. " I... don't wanna eat mice.... i want fish, " comes the pitiful whine, quiet and meant only for her littermates ears if only to avoid a scolding. But ears fallback and tail flicks irritably, and she means the words no less - unused to not having her way. Troutsnout would move the moon and stars themselves for Frecklepaw if only she could after all... but she isn't here anymore, and it hurts.

Cragkit had been off playing by himself, not too far away. He swats a mossball around, only to practice pouncing on it to trap it beneath forepaws. His attention is only snagged when he notices his denmates gathering around Hazecloud. Overcome with a feeling of being left out, the tom-kit is quick to abandon his game and scamper closer to the others. "I wanna try!" He responds enthusiastically to the queen, straining to peek over the other kits' heads so he can get a good view.

Everyone starts to try their paw at descaling, and he tries his very best to push his way forward so he can try, too. But before he can, Hazecloud recoils in disgust at something he can't quite see yet. Foxtail and the other kits follow suit. Garbage, everyone calls it. He makes a face, backing away a few paw-steps with his tail flicking in disappointment. He nods indignantly to agree with the other kits. He's hungry! "And I don't want bird," He pouts after Frecklepaw, sitting back on his haunches. No RiverClanner is supposed to eat birds - mama taught him so.
