I love you, and if you want, I'll call you King

Sun high in the sky, Wasppaw can't help but try to keep her face from twisting into something... odd. Her tail lashes as her head tilts to the left. What... the hell?
The ex-tunneler hasn't been above ground for very long - this patrol was one of her firsts - but this couldn't be... normal, right? A daft black paw nudges a snake that had frozen over night in a weird... bend.
Freaked out, but not really wanting anyone else to see in case it was, in fact, normal, the molly silently looks to the cat closest to her, hoping they would notice and say something. Anything to give her an indication of how to proceed.

But why do I lie awake each night thinking
"Instead of you, it should be me"?

Celandinepaw trotted alongside Wasppaw and the rest of the patrol, though her only goal was not to hunt but to linger around outside of camp for as long as she could. The golden-hued molly had accompanied Mallowtail and her apprentice underneath the guise of harvesting herbs, but even to an untrained eye, it was apparent that she did no such thing. With a restless mind wandering along the byways of snow-dipped hillocks, she could hardly focus on the supposed task at hand. Perfervid footfall yearned to exercise itself outside of camp, anywhere away from the dreariness of work. It wasn't until she noticed that the patrol had stopped that her reverie quickly faded into the mists of mistral winters. "Hmm? What's the matter?" The medicine cat apprentice mewed as the tunneller shot her a moon-rounded stare, and she looked as though she had seen the bight of a revenant, the cloak of a ghastly thing of imagination. She met the sable-coated molly with a concerned gaze of her own, with fictitious brows furrowing along a rounded face. That was, until she turned her attention to where a black paw nudged a strangely-striped snake, like some sort of crook that nested within the gloomy corners of the border. Reedlike whiskers twitched as she knelt down to sniff at it, casting a sun-spurned shadow onto the object. It smelled... artificial, unlike anything that she had ever dealt with. If she had to place it near something else, she would say it smelled almost like a too-ripened fruit that had not allowed rot to settle into its divots just yet. "Oh! That's uh... I don't know, to be honest. I've seen the workfolk put them in their mouths, though. But they don't chew... It's like they're sucking on sapwood. Workfolk are weird. I wouldn't touch it, though. What if one of them comes back to get it?" What's with them dropping all their food for us? They've always been sloppy. Have they never heard of stocking up for leaf-bare or something?

    — MEDICINAL EXPERTISE: Celandinepaw is the current medicine cat apprentice of Windclan. Although she is quite new to her position, she also has much expertise with treatment regarding infectious diseases and basic remedies. As for anything more complex... you're better off asking a more experienced medicine cat.

  • CELANDINEPAW & SHE / HER & 16 MOONS
—— Medicine Cat Apprentice of Windclan / Mentored by Cottonsprig
—— A shorthaired, wheat-yellow spotted tabby with yellowish-green eyes. Somewhat pudgy, though lean and able to hold her ground in the wild. Broad-shouldered and tall compared to her smaller clanmates, she stands out through a Windclan crowd.
—— Outgoing and terribly saccharine, she is a friendly and affable face in Windclan. Though ditzy and cowardly, she tries her best to help her clan as one of their healers. She is prone to outbursts when spurned or stressed. She also tends to follow her own personal code and will often go for a safe, painless option.
—— Penned by Tempest. Contact on Discord (naruk4mi) for plots and threads.

She was usually somewhere down in the tunnels for most of the daylight hours, but Laurelpaw wouldn't pass up a day where the wintry clouds unfurled to reveal some warming sunlight, however scant — though if asked, what she would tell Mallowtail and the others on the patrol was that she only wanted to lend an extra two paws and eyes to the hunt, if they ran into anything at all in the midst of this frost. The mottled apprentice trudges steadily alongside, ears pricked to catch prey noise between the rhythmic crunch of snowfall beneath her steps and the low whistling winds that shiver through the moors; her eyes trained solely forward, she nearly continues right past Wasppaw when she stops, only pausing to turn when she realizes can no longer notice her sister's gait matching her own across the crisp ground.

The red stripes are stark against the white-dusted grasses, practically begging for attention in its unnaturalness; for this reason, Laurelpaw had to wonder just what kind of worm or snake or whatever it is, is, and why it would be out here in the elements, rather than burrowed deep into the earth, seeking what shelter its embrace may offer. Perhaps it isn't a living thing at all, never was — but still, she goes to swipe at Wasppaw's reach for it, as a mother may lightly bat at a kit told 'no' once too many times. "Don't touch things like that," she snips, a sharp puff of air shooting from between a snap of teeth.

She only allows herself to settle just slightly once Celandinepaw dares a sniff and declares it as for the "workfolk" — if they had dropped their things here, then it may mean they had tread these grounds recently, which put their patrol in a potentially bad spot. What if they did come back for it? Or perhaps it had been discarded because it had gone bad, their equivalent to how one would throw out a piece of prey that started to sour. But the golden tabby speaks of how she's seen them sucking on sticks like these, and she squints curiously down at the little mystery. "Do they also use herbs? Maybe this is something they use for sickness in leaf-bare…"

Practiced eyes narrowed at the sight on WindClan's border that day, pupils thinning at the false scent that lurked. It was fruit, it wasn't fruit, it was sap, it wasn't sap, a foul amalgamation of what could've been, had Twolegs not intervened with what they didn't understood. Celandinepaw's explanation caused the white tufts of his ears to twitch, straightening his neck to stand prouder than any of the Twolegs he'd seen. "I would never eat a piece of prey that flashed such dangerous colours." If poison wore a coat, it would be bright red and dastardly white, and though his clanmates may be utterly insufferable, it was not his own life he would end with such a crooked snake.

Sheeppaw followed after the patrol, a yawn leaving his maw as he lingered near the back. Snow crunched under his paws, as the low wins brushed along the patrol's fur. Then he halted when the patrol suddenly stopped, half - lidded eyes blinked as he peered over to see the Celadinepaw and Wasppaw as the tunneler poked a striped snake. He tilted his head to the side like a bird as he slithered closer to the thing. Dark plumed tail twitched, and he knelt down next to the wheat-hued apprentice. Whiskers twitched, while he sniffed at the brightly striped thing.

He craned his neck back, at the... artificial thing. Weird. She wrinkles her muzzle up at the thing, it had a slight minty smell. Naturally curious about things, she pokes at the strange Twoleg herb with a paw. "Maybe it's harmless?" She questions. If the workfolk at the barn suck on these sticks, maybe they're harmless? The apprentice twitches a large ear as he pokes at the stick again. ...But the minty stench doesn't seem so appealing.

‧₊˚ ☾. ⋅ The sensation of sun warming Wraithwail's paper-thin skin and wispy curls was a welcome sensation, the way the breeze buffeted her pelt with nothing more than a gentle graze did well to lift her mood and keep her body from trembling with it's familiar tremble. She slowed down during the cold seasons, for despite her long, flowing mane that blanketed her, it was thin and easily cut through at the right angle. She did her best to keep warm until the Leafbare passing, however she knew as well as anyone else that she couldn't stay cuddled up inside the warrior's den for long, the warmness of it always a sweet embrace by the end of each day.

Her companions were quickly accumulating to one side of the moors, grouping together like a burrow full of half-starved rabbits as their murmurs grew in volume alongside their thinly veiled curiosity. Wraithwail would begin to glide across the grasslands and into the fray, though she did not need to push- her height towered over the majority of her clanmates- her own desire to find out what was so enamoring getting the better of her. She had never seen anything like it, though she felt no fear as a crude but gentle smile twisted the otherwise soft features of her face. "Oh my..." She breathed, glinting eyes locked onto the striped, hardened shape that lay without a spirit upon the earth. She would not contribute personally to the bickering, however she was more than happy to linger and absorb the theories cast about by those around her.

*+:。.。 Viperpaw trots obediently behind his mentor, his ever-grinning shadow. He makes a point to wave pleasantly at his sisters, before darting interested chartreuse eyes between each conversing cat. "I don't think it's prey, Sootspot" he offers helpfully, hoping to reassure the older man that his fears of a potentially poisonous creature were unjustified. Sniffing the object, he'd doubt it was a snake - such creatures have distinctly sharp eyes, even in death. This thing...looked more like a stiff worm.

Celendinepaw explains that two legs often put it in their mouths, which makes the young man's eyes widen with even more curiosity. It smells...almost like the mint the medicine cats hold in storage...albeit far sharper and...sweeter. Laurelpaw's theory perks Viperpaw's ears instantly. Since it smelled like herbs, and twolegs weren't afraid to put it in their mouths and Celendinepaw recognized it - then all signs pointed to medicine, right!?

Inarguable!

"IM GOING TO TEST IT!" he announces, proud of his own bravery. Before the young man could be stopped - mostly by Laurelpaw - Viperpaw would lean closer and promptly lick the "not-worm, not-snake, not-poisonous (hopefully)" item.

Immediately, the tunneler jerks back, looking much like his namesake as he ejects his tongue and then sucks it back in only to spit it back out between his teeth, instinctively unsure what to do with his organ. After a moment, though, he laps at his lips and considers the new information, blinking hard. "PROBABLY NOT AN HERB!" he reveals with a laugh, still sucking in his tongue and sticking it back out in rapid succession. "IT MAKES MY TONGUE TINGLE! I REALLY DON'T LIKE IT!" Twolegs were absolutely bonkers for eating this stuff!
