DEAD END ALLEY [🌘] PLOT MEETING

IMG_0990.png

SOOTSTAR
Sometime has passed since Cygnetstare and Cloudedsky had unveiled a plan for WindClan. One that would increase their defenses and yet again make their tunnelers an invaluable component of the clan. Albeit, this plan will take a tremendous amount of time and resources, hell… it's never even been attempted in tunneler history what she was about to propose to the clan!

But if we succeed… my clan grows stronger.

"All cats old enough to race the moors gather beneath the Tallrock for a clan meeting!"

Cats began to trickle in, many murmuring to each other suspicions on what she had to announce. "Did someone pass their warrior assessment…? It's still a bit early for Scorchstreak's litter." followed by a "Dunno… maybe she has news about… y'know." Sootstar looks down upon the two warriors and suppresses a confused look. What news were they expecting that they left unspoken?

Once the clan is settled beneath her paws she begins, "Cygnetstare and Cloudedsky approached me with an idea less than a half-moon ago. I've sat on it for some time… and with some thought I've decided to put their genius to action." She dips her head to the pink-eyed warrior and her daughter.

"RiverClan proves to be a constant nuisance, they are not an easy tick to pluck, their fangs are dug deep and content with causing issues at our borders." Meows of agreement ripple across the gathered cats, there was not a clan-mate unaffected by RiverClan's schemes and lies. "That is why our tunnelers will be building a tunnel that takes us straight to the twoleg bridge. If we start now and work hard we will be able to have the tunnel accomplished by leaf-bare."

There was a good probability the moor runners wouldn't understand. How would tunnels help? Would this really be worth less hunters for the clan? Some may doubt the diggers ability to craft a tunnel that big entirely. "Scorchstreak and I will work with the tunnels to get this project started. Badgermoon will continue to send more frequent patrols to RiverClan's border, we'll make our scent thick there. Just be cautious, RiverClan warned ThunderClan of twoleg issues… and the twoleg bridge is their craftsmanship."

Sootstar then quiets down, it appears she has more to say yet she allows an opening for the clan to speak.

A meeting. This wasn't very typical, after all. It was out of rotation with their normal set of meeting, so the tunneler- who had been lounging around camp- perked her ears as they were called. Sanguinerush stood, padding over with her attention honing on on their leader. The explanation began as every began to settle down and in. She had sat to tip her gaze up, and upon receiving the news, perked her ears. "Tunnel digging." She paused, then grinned quietly.

A tunnel straight to Riverclan's territory. Oh, how she liked this plan. Sanguinerush inhaled quietly, squaring her shoulders and sitting a bit more upright. Toothy grin followed, her tail swaying behind her. She liked this plan. "Sounds good to me!" She called up, but quieted back down. After all, they hadn't been called for dismissal just yet.

Mousepaw wasn't expecting a meeting so soon after the gathering, especially since as far as he knew there hadn't been anything really happening since then with the other clans. They were around and annoying sure, but that was normal, and they hadn't done anything out of that normalcy, so when Sootstar announced to gather beneath the Tallrock, he was surprised, but still quickly came anyway, not wanting to miss a single thing that was announced.

Eyes widened as she spoke of the tunnels, and how they were to make a large tunnel heading towards the twoleg bridge, and Mousepaw's claws began to dig into the earth in excitement. Finally, something other than training for him to do in the tunnels! Large ears pricked as he looked up towards Sootstar, waiting for her to continue speaking. He didn't even realize he was holding his breath.

♱—— cygnetstare is still penned up in camp, mostly restricted to the living graveyard that is the medicine den; it's pleasant enough, without the sun shredding her fur raw, but .... her paws itch. not just for the tunnels, but to be a moving body, doing something for her clan. she's made occasional forays into the world of the ambulatory when she feels able and today is one of those times, especially when she hears sootstar's familiar yowl. excitement kindles itself in the husk of her chest and she shifts closer with no small effort, laying with a still-wrapped neck wound to watch the meeting. hopefully those nearby will understand why she doesn't sit up, given the circumstances; if anything, they'll think it par for the course with her.

other cats trickle in slowly, in the whispering, moving mass of their clan. she looks with no small amount of envy upon the tunnelers with the dirt baked into their fur and rolling off them in waves of a familiar scent that makes her claws ache for the purchase of the soil. she draws milkweed eyes back to the smoke that crests the rock when the clan quiets, neck sore but interested. it's about her and cloudedsky's idea, then? tattered ears flick with interest, head inclining as best she can in a respectful return.

she agrees, silently, that riverclan is an issue. their every word, every action, every choice has done nothing good for windclan—the river beasts have acted against the good of this clan, and to her that is the worst offense. their idea is accepted; a new tunnel to the twoleg bridge—if spines bristle on the side of the moor-runners, she chooses to ignore it. she thinks this idea will serve their clan; if she hadn't thought so, she would have never brought it up at all. cygnetstare's eyes are flatly satisfied, not with herself, but with the future this will hopefully bring windclan.

"i agree with ya," she calls raspily to sanguinerush amongst the ripples of whispers in the crowd. she hopes once her wounds have sufficiently healed she'll help with this project stretching to leaf-bare; opportunities to take the duty of it will abound, they think, and they will happily assume the task.

bunnybreath was unusually early to the meeting. he took a seat among the first few gathered felines, letting his tail rest atop his paws, and beamed like he'd won a prize. though he'd never admit it, lest it be seen as a flaw, the ragdoll tom was chronically late. he was always barging into events at the last moment with some kind of elaborate but ultimately questionable excuse for his timing. but today, no. today, he was on time. he puffed out his chest and watched his clanmates pour into the meeting, feeling wonderful.

when sootstar spoke, he cocked his head slightly and tried to focus on the leader's words. it was too easy to get distracted in such a large group. he fidgeted despite himself, shuffling his paws and letting his tail tap lightly to a beat inside his head. focusing got easier when sootstar's plan came to light. a tunnel to the twoleg bridge? wouldn't that take forever? his face contorted, though he said nothing, just sat silently as the cats around him called out in agreement. he respected sootstar, trusted her judgement, so there must be a good reason for the plan, crazy as it seemed to him.

Scorchstreak expects the leader to call for a meeting, and so she merely narrows her eyes at the cats who question Sootstar's reasoning for this announcement. She nearly dares them to continue speaking, to finish their thoughts aloud. But they don't, and Sootstar begins to speak. She announces the beginning of the clan's very first tunneling project—digging a tunnel to RiverClan territory. The river clan has been a thorn in all their sides for far too long, and the recent incident with Cottonpaw has only given WindClan more reason to be wary of them. The cats across the water cannot be trusted. No other foolish apprentices will be snatched across the border, and Cottonpaw certainly won't be—not if Scorchstreak has anything to say about it.

The leader's estimate of having the new tunnel finished by winter is a good one, because come wintertime the earth will be too hard to dig into anyway. If the tunnel isn't completed by then, they will likely have to wait until spring before they can continue it anyway. She dips her head as the smoky-furred queen says her name; she will certainly be at the forefront of this tunneling operation, overseeing the project beside Sootstar herself. The increased patrols to RiverClan seem a good idea as well, especially because they will work as a distraction as well as a defense. The calico offers a stiff smile to her leader, a silent agreement. She cannot wait to get her paws dirty.

Soft and quick pawsteps carried Rattleheart over to their usual space beneath the Tallrock, green gaze focused upward in curiosity. It didn't seem like enough time had passed for one of their regular meetings, and some part of them wondered if perhaps the gathering hadn't gone well. Just the thought was enough to make their heart sink down into their stomach, petrified that Sootstar was calling them all together to announce another ill-advised attack on another clan. Their shoulder still ached from the last one, although much less than in the few days immediately following the battle - thank Starclan for Wolfsong's training, or else they were sure they wouldn't be anywhere close to returning to the tunnels that felt like their true home.

The mention of Riverclan to start things off already puts them at some level of unease, jaw stiff and tail lashing as they waited for the other shoe to drop. Instead of another call to action, though, Sootstar announced that Cygnetstare and Cloudedsky had come up with a plan. Not just any plan, but a plan that involved the tunnelers. That was enough to make Rattleheart's ears perk up, the irritated lashing behind them settling down to just a simple twitching of curiosity. A way to help their clan that didn't involve spilling the blood of others? It sounded like a genuine gift, and they didn't hesitate in sending a grateful glance in Cyngetstare's direction. Not that she would likely notice it, still dealing with her own wounds from the struggle with Skyclan.

There was a certain proud rumble in the monochrome tom's chest as they heard mention of their sister's name, moving over to where she stood and lightly bumping their head into her shoulder. It's a proud, affectionate greeting. "I always knew you were important around here, but this is gonna be something really amazing. And I get to help this time!" The usual anxiety is free from their tone for once, replaced with a genuine excitement and confidence over their own role in things. They had never considered being a tunneler to be a lesser position or something to be ashamed of, but they did have to admit it sometimes stung not being as immediately useful as the moor runners with their broad shoulders and impressive muscles. This, though, this was something they knew how to help with.

Unfortunately, Sedgepaw is one of those cats who does not understand. What will the tunnels do for them? What's the point?

He sits toward the back of the gathering, neither old enough to speak up nor experienced enough to understand the scope of the proposal, gazing toward Sootstar with a small pensive frown. The tunnels are foreign to him and his moor runner training; he knows them to be dangerous and little else. To him, the moors are plenty easy to travel across—and if they plan an attack right, surely they can take RiverClan by surprise above ground just fine.

He's not really doubting Sootstar. Everyone else seems to take the news with a fervor he hasn't seen since before the skirmish with SkyClan, or before his own injury. It's just that Sedgepaw's talents lie within the practical affects of battle, and his knowledge of tactics are sourly lacking.

As a proud WindClanner, that weakness should probably bother him more than it does. For now, he just listens to the discussions.

SOOTSTAR
The positive approval of the clan makes her smile. There were some days where it felt like the clan was always quarreling with each other, the tunnelers always had been an in-unison bunch, however. Any moor-runner confusion she does not notice.

"It is settled then. We will begin immediately." The she-cat meows, eager to get this project started. "We will begin to dig the new tunnel right outside camp, just before you go uphill we are going to branch off in the direction of fourtrees." This was complete gibberish for cats not familiar with the tunnels, but a majority should know exactly where she means.

"Other matters first though, while I've got you." Her eyes find a black and white pelt among the crowd, then she descends off the Tallrock while beckoning, "Snakepaw, step forward."

Badgermoon had approached her last night, Snakepaw was ready to become a warrior. She agreed and told the deputy she'd promote him at the first opportunity.

"I, Sootstar, leader of WindClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn."

Green eyes meet green eyes. " @SNAKEPAW , do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
IMG_0583.gif

It was an important meeting for the Clan as a whole - Badgermoon knew this, knew the importance of the tunnels in general and the potential for a major advantage if the RiverClan tunnel could be dug in sufficient time - but he could not help but itch with anticipation for the rest of the meeting to proceed. It was time for Snakepaw to become a warrior. The young cat's assessment had proceeded successfully, albeit...a little differently than Badgermoon had expected...and ever since Sootstar had agreed to the promotion, his paws had tingled with pent-up energy. He was satisfied with the shadowy-furred youth's skills in hunting, fighting, and the other physical aspects of warriorhood...but he did worry about Snakepaw's temperament.

Alas, in Badgermoon's estimation, there was nothing more he could do for Snakepaw - he had tried to remind the boy of the importance of kindness and loyalty to his Clanmates, tried to support him through his turbulent adolescent feelings, tried to punish him for his too-sharp tongue. Nothing seemed to make Snakepaw less, well...viperish, and Badgermoon had accepted the fact that Snakepaw would be a fearsome, albeit rude, warrior. Perhaps time will soften his bite. thought the black-and-white tom with a twitch of his dark tail. Yeah, right. a cat could dream, anyways. Silencing his errant thoughts and stilling his body, the deputy waited in tense silence as his apprentice's ceremony began, golden gaze shifting anxiously between Sootstar and Snakepaw.

Atypical of a usual meeting held by the Moor Queen, the fierce woman begins her address by informing the clan of an idea brought to her attention by two of her warriors. A slight sneer appears on Snakepaw's features as he angles his ears to listen; Cygnetstare and Cloudedsky were not favorable in his eyes for varying reasons and it's even more irritating that their "brilliant" plan has earned the approval of Sootstar and the entire group. It seemed that the tunnelers had a more interesting task to accomplish, to be acknowledged and applauded for. Snakepaw would have to work twice as hard to wrangle the attention and approval of his clanmates away from the tunnelers.

Speaking of attention, though, it seemed that all eyes would be on him for the next segment of the meeting.

Against the odds, against the scorn of his pebble-minded clanmates and his rivals, he would finally be given his warrior name. His assessment had been rather... unorthodox and he still hadn't ample time to fully process what had occurred, but now was the very moment he had been waiting his entire life for.

Snakepaw's parents watched proudly from the background as their son stepped forth, not the small and fuzzy-faced kitten that he was moons ago but now nearly a fully-fledged adult standing on lean limbs sculpted and forged by the moors themselves. Emerald hues stared into Sootstar's as she commenced the ceremonial words, to which he responded boldly for all to hear, "I do."

SOOTSTAR
"I do."

Sootstar dips her head, "Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior name. Snakepaw, from this moment on you will be known as Snakehiss. StarClan honors your ferocity and wit and we welcome you as a full warrior of WindClan."

The leader smiles and steps forward to rest her muzzle atop the black warrior's head. Once she feels the lick on her shoulder she steps back and murmurs a congratulations before turning and climbing the Tallrock once more.

Chanting yowls for the new warrior ring out across the camp, Sootstar allows time for congratulations to be exchanged and for Snakehiss to settle back amongst the crowd before carrying on.

" @RUMBLEKIT , @LUCKYKIT , @SCORCHKIT , @frostkit and @parsnipkit step forward." The nursery was about to get very empty with the leaving of Badgermoon and Scorchstreak's kits, young Parsnipkit as well. Her whiskers twitch fretfully, she hopes they'll have a few more green-leaf litters to make the clan strong for Leaf-bare.

"Rumblekit, Luckykit, Scorchkit, Frostkit and Parsnipkit, you have all reached the age of three moons and it is time for you to be apprenticed. Rumblekit," she looks at the kit, "From this day on until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Rumblepaw. Your mentor will be Brindlecloud. I hope Brindlecloud passes down all he knows onto you." Brindlecloud was a young warrior, but she trusts the Tom to train Rumblepaw with all he's got.

"Luckykit, from this day on until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Luckypaw. Your mentor will be @cygnetstare . I hope Cygnetstare passes down all she knows onto you." The black and white tunneler has been a warrior for some time now. She's shown herself to be fierce and loyal to her clan, Sootstar trusts she'll do just fine as a mentor at last.

"Scorchkit, from this day on until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Scorchpaw. Your mentor will be @Badgermoon . Snakehiss' training may have just finished, but I expect Badgermoon to train Scorchpaw to be the best warrior she can be." She dips her head to the deputy and watches the two touch noses before continuing.

"Frostkit, from this day on until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Frostpaw. Your mentor will be Spiderpelt I hope Spiderpelt passes down all he knows onto you." Unlike the previous mentors, Spiderpelt was among WindClan's older warriors. He was an old and patient tunneler, but he knew how to hold a firm paw when needed. He'll make a fine mentor for Frostpaw.

Last but not least, "Parsnipkit, from this day on until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Parsnipaw. Your mentor will be Flametrot. I hope Flametrot passes down all she knows onto you." Flametrot was a spunky moor runner with lots of energy. Sootstar fears she might not hold the patience and concentration to train an apprentice… but maybe an apprentice is just what she needs to reign her focus. Only time will tell, but she has hopes that the pairing will do just fine.

A meeting.

Blue eyes, devoid of emotion lifted from her spot at the edge of camp. A slender and small grey feline, with shaggy fur and a face seemingly splashed in white would get closer, her steps careful, and foreclaws extended. There was no battle near, yet, the female would always be on edge.

Always be prepared.

Her name is beneath her, for as long as she remembered, she does not cry. Windclan warriors do not do such a thing. She was built, bended, and made to be the empty shell she felt today.

The tunnelers ears perked, and her gaze, hidden by shaggy fur, still lifted to watch the ebony leader above them. They would not expect the entire battle party leap out from tunnels and they would be blindsided.

They would take their cocky attitudes and shove it up their asses. WeepingWillow was no stranger to battles, and she would put her best paw forward and assist where it needs to be. They would not continue to be a toy to Riverclans pesky rituals.

Her gaze shifted as attention was brought to Snakepaw. She was inclined to say she stayed away from children, annoyed by their behavior. But she remembered the apprentice who thought he was all too good for everyone else while she remained in the den with him for the short period she was in there.

Her shouts were there with everyone elses, as well as the new apprentices to be named. Normally, she would remove herself from the meetings as they were finished, but she would remain, seeing what their course of action was next.

To say Parsnip had been expecting to be called in this meeting was an understatement. He had been chilling off on the sidelines, watching the tunnelers rejoice with barely any interest. There had been a warrior ceremony too after Mrs Sootstar finished her announcements but he hadn't... exactly paid attention to it as much as he should have. And then it was his turn, and also the Scorch kids turns. He blinks dual-toned eyes in surprise cause he hadn't even really groomed his fur, scruffy and nasty cause Pa had also been out today. Desperately Parsnip looks around for his dad, eyes blown wide cause where was he?

Parsnip didn't have much time to fret cause Sootstar blew through those other ones fast, and at the very end of it, it was finally his turn at last. Theres a heavy sigh that leaves his mouth cause it didn't feel right having his ceremony without catching Pa's eye. He was given his mentor: Flametrot. Aw, man... A moor-runner...? Parsnip had been hoping to be a tunneler cause that'd be cooler, but he supposes this arrangement wasn't too bad. He didn't have to be stuffed in to a tunnel where he probably wouldn't fit. Flametrot is also really really energetic and bounces up to Parsnip to touch her nose to his. Internally he groans cause now he'll have to run everywhere with her...

Once his ordeal is over with, Parsnip looks through the crowd, now trying to catch a glimpse of Badgermoon and Scorchkit. Scorchpaw now, just like Parsnipkit was Parsnippaw. Theres a twinge of slight jealousy, her being apprenticed to her own dad, something that Parsnip wishes could have happened to him. If she meets his gaze, he'll smile. At least he'll be a moor-runner with his friend. Sucks for, uh, uhm... Unfortunately Parsnip wasn't quite sure which of the other kits got what kinda mentor besides Badgermoon. Cygnet-somethin was... a tunneller, he thinks. Oh, well, he shakes his coat and tips his head up incase Sootstar had somethin else to say.

The next announcement is of Snakepaw's graduation to a warrior, and although Scorchstreak is not fond of the young tom, she calls out his new name along with the rest of the clan's members. Snakehiss is a fitting name for him, given his spitting, snappish demeanor. Perhaps his aggression will calm, now that he has gained his promotion. Attitude issues aside, though, he is surely a capable young warrior and Scorchstreak is happy to cheer him on.

Her own kits' names are called, and surprise colors the calico's face. She had expected their apprenticeships to wait another week or two, but it seems that Sootstar has decided to do it now. Gold eyes track her kits as they each step forward to receive their new names and rankings. They are apprentices, now, and their mentors are all capable, strong warriors. There is only one problem that Scorchstreak's attention catches onto—two of the four are not tunnelers. Rumblepaw and Scorchpaw are each named as moor runners, defying their own names. Frostpaw, too, defies his name, but at least he is a tunneler. And her beloved Luckykit, now Luckypaw, has been named a tunneler as well. She seeks to catch the eyes of the two newly-named tunneler apprentices, offering each of them a warm smile in turn.

Still, her displessure is clear in her body language, stiff and bristled. Scorchpaw, apprenticed to a moor runner, and her father at that? And Rumblepaw, the kit she had specifically named after he tunneling partner, apprentices to a moor runner as well? A disappointment. But at least Luckypaw and Frostpaw are tunnelers, and Luckypaw is apprenticed to a cat she likes and trusts. They can both help with the tunnel that the leader has just announced.

♱—— one of the apprentices joins warriorhood—a moor-runner, so cygnetstare cannot lie and say she cares terribly much. she's usually only excited about ceremonies when it's a new tunneler joining their ranks, and right now is no exception. she recalls this as one of the ruder apprentices, so she's closer to indifferent about his ranking; still, she lends a raspy voice to the cheers. she might not care too much on a personal level, but she still respects the work the moor-runners do for their clan—any new warrior was good for the clan, so it was good for cygnetstare.

she'd forgotten scorchstreak's kits were already approaching the age of apprenticeship. it seemed like only a couple sunrises ago they'd been wriggling bundles nestled at the calico's stomach as cygnetstare delivered her strange gift to the lead warrior. she's a bit startled to hear her name called alongside luckykit's, now luckypaw's, but cygnetstare pulls herself to her paws gingerly, stepping forward on strong legs not wasted by her long stay in the medicine den. the chimera touches her nose to luckykit's, having to bend down not much at all to meet the tortie tom's nose, interest glittering in milkweed eyes.

once she's stepped back, cygnetstare seats herself carefully, unsure whether they've yet been dismissed, to think on her new duty. she had never been one of those warriors who chases after the apparent honor of apprenticeship, but she supposes she's perhaps even a bit overdue for one now that she thinks on it. they're pleased with this, pleased with the apprentice they've been entrusted with; the tunnelers always have less apprentices available than their fellows who run the moors. the small chimera twitches a long tail, thinking on her own apprenticeship so long ago, hoping luckypaw won't be too difficult.

scorchstreak's fur seems ruffled by the announcement that two of her kits will be moor-runners; cygnetstare supposes that's understandable, to think that two of your children will never really understand the life of a tunneler. then again, badgermoon isn't exactly a small tom—it's not entirely surprising. she tips her head politely to the calico; they respect scorchstreak, trust her as a tunneler and a clanmate, and they hope to honor luckypaw's respectable family as she trains him. it will be only a couple days, cygnetstare thinks, until she's no longer penned up by injury and she can give luckypaw his first taste of the tunnels. she's excited.

Weaselclaw admires the glow silhouetting Sootstar, the fire banked in her green eyes, as she announces WindClan's tunnel expansion project. It's a brilliant idea, and he gives both Cygnetstare and Cloudedsky a respectful glance. RiverClan would not expect it, and though the moor runners cannot utilize it, there is still the border to over-scent and the Twoleg Bridge to treat as a potential battlefield, as it has been before. The tabby verbalizes his approval with the rest of the Clan before wrapping his tail about his paws to listen to ceremonies.

Sootstar first calls Snakepaw to the Tallrock. The young tom's raven-feather pelt is meticulously groomed, and his eyes shine with pride. Weaselclaw has no doubts that, despite the acid bite of his tongue, Snakehiss will be a fine WindClan warrior. The tabby calls, "Snakehiss! Snakehiss!" Absently, he spares a glance for Sparkspirit, wondering how his former apprentice feels about the promotion. Is he proud of his rival for reaching his status, or is he dismayed to have to share his rank again?

Badgermoon and Scorchstreak's kits have reached their third moon as well. With interest, Weaselclaw watches them stream forward to brush noses with their new mentors. Scorchpaw is going to be trained by her father, a moor runner; he spares his tortoiseshell co-lead warrior a glance, wondering how she feels about her namesake having the opposite path of her own. Rumblepaw will race the moors with their sister, while Frostpaw and Luckypaw will follow in Scorchstreak's paw prints. He understands some of what the calico must be feeling—he will never understand Bluepaw or Cottonpaw's paths the way he does his sons' and Moorpaw's, and there will always be a clear divide between them.

Still, new WindClan apprentices, especially those with such promising blood, are something to celebrate. "Scorchpaw! Rumblepaw! Luckypaw! Frostpaw!"

When meetings are called, Luckykit likes to listen in from wherever he's last been playing, though never daring to join in with the crowd - after all, he's not really supposed to be there at all just yet. Today is no exception as he pauses in place after hearing Sootstar's call, watching cats begin to filter over. The bulk of her message is about building tunnels to RiverClan, which provokes in him a now-familiar feeling of both excitement and nerves. Do any of the tunnelers feel the same, he wonders? Is it as thrilling as it is terrifying to skulk about below, with their enemies none the wiser? Looking at those gathered, the general consensus seems to be excitement, he thinks, and it's not really all that hard to understand why. Soon he'll be able to join them down there, and perhaps then he'll truly understand the enthusiasm flashing across the faces of his clanmates. Sootstar then branches off to another topic - Snakepaw's warrior ceremony. Far from the only warrior ceremony Luckykit has witnessed, he cranes his neck, trying to spot the black-furred apprentice out of idle curiosity. While he can't say he has any particular fondness for Snakepaw, with his own apprenticeship imminent, it's hard not to feel a little excitement for the ceremony.

And just like that, Snakepaw is crowned Snakehiss - a name that makes sense, he thinks, since the new warrior always seemed to have a sneer of sorts whenever Luckykit has been around him. If the warrior ceremony after the RiverClan tunnels announcement had been a surprise, the next words from Sootstar are downright shocking - it's time for his apprenticeship? Hearing himself, his littermates, and Parsnipkit called forward, he freezes up; despite knowing it was about time, he perhaps foolishly thought there would still be time yet. He can't just sit there looking dumbfounded forever, he knows, and so after giving himself a few quick licks to flatten his fur (thankfully, he hadn't been playing too rowdy that day), he follows the rest, weaving through the crowd to stand before Sootstar alongside the others. Chin up, tail held high, Luckykit tries to stand still as a statue as the ceremonies begin, hardly hearing as Rumblekit is the first to become Rumblepaw - they're a moor runner, he's pretty sure, but there's time to piece together and process later. Even as he tries to hold completely still, there's still some margin to stiffen entirely as his name is called next.

As soon as he's named, it's as though Luckykit forgets to breathe - this is it. Luckykit becomes Luckypaw in one fell swoop, and he savors the way the name sounds coming from Sootstar. Luckypaw. Of course, the naming is only part of it, and so Luckypaw is paired with - Cygnetstare? Truth be told, he'd spent plenty of time contemplating who might be his mentor, many different cats with many different temperaments, and it would be a lie to say he hadn't entertained the possibility of the odd chimera being his mentor - not that he'd hoped for it. She was a bit...off-putting, to say the least, but then again, they're a loyal, respected tunneler of WindClan, right? The wounds still visible on her pelt tell of devotion and victory, and he tries to tell himself it's an honor that they were chosen to mentor him. As Cygnetstare approaches, he tries to continue to hold himself steady, stretching up slightly to touch his nose to hers. For a moment, their eyes lock, and he hopes there's no apprehension brimming in his gaze.

Finally, as Cygnetstare steps away and his ceremony is sealed, Luckypaw takes a deep breath, and then another. He feels light-headed, like he needs to sit down and process for about a moon, but his was only the second ceremony. Scorchkit is called up, and it's yet another shock as she becomes Scorchpaw, apprenticed to Badgermoon of all cats. His first instinct is a small flare of disappointment and anxiety, just like with Rumblepaw - neither of them were really tunnelers? They're both bigger than he is, of course, but he'd really hoped... Regardless, he can't help a small pinprick of jealousy, either, at the fact that Scorchpaw gets to train under their father. It's irrational, he thinks, since there wasn't ever even a chance that he'd get Badgermoon as his mentor, and besides, Cygnetstare is...fine, they're fine, and so he tries to banish any negativity from his mind. If anything, Luckypaw should be happy for his sister, receiving such a fine mentor, even if it means he won't be seeing her or Rumblepaw much due to their different paths.

Frostkit is up next, and he finds himself desperately relieved as he's named Frostpaw and apprenticed to a tunneler as well - he'd been certain that they both would be, but it feels like a weight off his shoulders to actually hear it himself that he won't be deprived of all three of his littermates down there. Parsnipkit, too, becomes Parsnippaw, apprenticed to a moor runner, and though he hardly knows the newly-made apprentice all that well, Luckypaw still finds himself slightly disappointed at the loss of another familiar face to train alongside. With that, though, the ceremonies are over, and he feels free to move, if only a bit for now, in case there's anything else left during this meeting. His legs want to fold, body wants to sink to the ground; instead, he looks first to his siblings, his fellow apprentices, now, wanting to gauge their reactions. Are they feeling exhilarated? Are they pleased with their mentors? Do they feel just as shaky as he does? Whether any of them meet his gaze or not, he feels his expression begin to crack into that of a genuine smile. Whatever comes next, he's a real apprentice now!

Instinctively, he seeks out Scorchstreak next, eyes lighting up when he spots the familiar tones of her pelt. Eyes meet, just as he'd stared into Cygnetstare's so recently, and his smile grows as he spots hers. Sure, he doesn't have Badgermoon for a mentor, or even Scorchstreak herself, but at least his mother will still be down there with him and Frostpaw, just like his father will be out on the moors with Scorchpaw and Rumblepaw. How long will it take for their differences to begin to show, he wonders, glancing at Badgermoon and hoping to catch his eye, too, if he's not busy with Scorchpaw. It will be evident immediately from a quick glance, he thinks, white paws already slightly tinged brown, but when will their skill differences really come into play? Hopefully, there'll still be time for them to come back together as four again sometime, even if it's under the guise of training; maybe they'd even be able to teach each other a few tricks from the other path of training. For now, though, Luckypaw tries not to worry about any of that, simply basking in the feeling of being an apprentice and in a new, certain feeling of pride and duty to WindClan.

"Snakehiss! Snakehiss!" In what felt like no time at all, the ceremony was complete, and WindClan had a new warrior midst its ranks: Snakehiss. It was a suitable name, Badgermoon thought - evocative of a snake's ferocity and of the newly-made warrior's snide attitude. Proud of his apprentice and content with the promotion, he had expected the meeting to conclude, only for the Moor Queen to lift her voice and call out the names of his kits - and Parsnipkit. It's time for their ceremonies already?! the bicolor tom thought with a surge of surprise and anxiety. How had the moons flown by so quickly? It felt as if he had just yesterday been gazing down at the patchwork curve of Scorchstreak's stomach, studying his newborn children with a joy so great it felt as if he was suffocating. And yet, for them, certainly the first three moons of their life had been agonizingly slow: proceeding with painful sluggishness to this very moment.

Badgermoon puffed out his scarred chest, inexpressibly proud of his kits as they stepped up and had their ceremonies in turn. Rumblepaw, to be trained by Brindlecloud; Luckypaw, becoming Cygnetstare's apprentice; Frostpaw, receiving Spiderpelt as a mentor; and...Scorchpaw, who would become his apprentice. Truth be told, the deputy had not dared to even hope he could end up mentoring any of his children. That he would receive such a privilege sent a gleeful thrill racing from the snowy tops of his ears to the ink-black tip of his tail. His moon-yellow eyes were round and seemed to glow with delight as he touched noses with his daughter, offering a noisy purr before stepping back and sweeping his gaze across the rest of his kits. He met Luckypaw's eyes and offered his son a grin so wide it nearly split his face in two, and in a thunderous voice, bellowed: "Rumblepaw! Luckypaw! Scorchpaw! Frostpaw! Parsnip-paw!"

Scorchkit is not old enough to race the moors; she is not old enough to catch her own prey; she is not old enough to be beneath the Tallrock with these cats, she thinks. And yet she gathers, anxiety thumping like rabbits in her chest. It's still early for her siblings and herself to become apprentices. This, she knows; she ought not to get her hopes up that she might join Hollypaw and Juniperpaw in the apprentice den, or that she might have one of the best tunnelers for a mentor. Maybe she'll be apprenticed to Rattleheart or Cygnetstare; maybe she'll be apprenticed to Sootstar; maybe she'll be apprenticed to... her mother. The shadow sits at Scorchstreak's side, staring up at her with wide bi-colored eyes. Scorchkit tries to shrink her broad shoulders and hunch her tall frame. She'll be a tunneler, and she knows it, and how perfect would it be to be apprenticed to her namesake?

She is excited to hear the news of the tunnels; she still predicts that she'll have her own role in them, somehow. She is excited to call Snakehiss's name, for he will make a fine warrior (after all, her father trained him). She is doubly excited to step up when Sootstar orders her to; she is eager to receive her apprentice name and be crowned a princess-in-training of the underground. Her breath does not hitch when Rumblepaw is named a moor-runner. She regards her sibling warmly, a sparkle in her gaze. She trusts Sootstar's judgement, but she still offers a silent prayer to StarClan that Rumblepaw's mentor would be good to them and train them up well.

Then it is Luckykit's turn. He becomes Luckypaw in a single breath; she is happy for him, although she is suddenly nervous that her own evolution will be as easy. He's apprenticed to Cygnetstare, and Scorchkit beams at him. She's a good warrior, albeit a bit... strange, but she would certainly teach Luckykit well, right? Scorchkit offers up another prayer. Hopefully Luckykit would do well with his new mentor.

And then it is her turn. Scorchkit's gaze fixes to Sootstar and sticks there. She can't let this moment pass in any other way; she can't allow herself to be distracted during her own apprentice ceremony. It would become one of the most pivotal moments of her life, wouldn't it? This is where her path to being a great warrior begins. She's... excited! She's excited to grow up to be like Periwinklebreeze, or like Wolfsong, or like her mother. Scorchkit allows herself an errant glance to her larger reflection, trying to gauge her mother's feelings, but all she can read is surprise. Anxiety touches her chest. Why is Scorchstreak surprised? Should Scorchkit be worried for the upcoming announcement? But there's no need-- she'll become a tunneler, apprenticed to her mother or some other great warrior, and that's that. Right?

Wrong. Scorchkit-- Scorchpaw, now --looks back to Sootstar just in time to hear her mentor's name called: Badgermoon. Her jaws part but she bites back her confused protest. That surely isn't right; how could she be apprenticed to Badgermoon? She's meant to be a tunneler, obviously. Never mind her broad shoulders or her large paws that she still doesn't quite fit; never mind the way she hunches now, trying to make herself smaller. Scorchkit's beaming smile fades quietly and without complaint. She tries not to wear it on her face, though, as she touches noses with her father, sealing her fate aboveground. Cats cheer her name; she cheers for Frostpaw (and ignores the jealous pangs that stab through her chest); it is still a happy ceremony, right? She can still serve her clan this way.

But Scorchpaw eyes her mother's stiff posture and wonders if she'd somehow done something to earn this punishment.
