camp NOT THE SAME AS IT WAS ☾ back at camp

—————————————————————⊰☾⊱————————————————————

She thinks of that night talking to Howlingstar, her grandmother comparing her to a lone wolf as they listened to one bay forlornly in the distance. She wonders if it was one of the ones now causing such chaos within their home, killing their clanmates. She thinks of being compared to such a beast and her lips curl into a grimace, she thinks of being told a wolf was only strong with its pack and the vision of Sunfreckle's blood spilling across the broken earth upturned by sharp claws. No, Howlingstar, I was right. They don't need a pack, they're terrifying without one.
A single wolf had flung the tabby tom almost as large as she was with little effort, their strength was daunting and eclipsed any cat's efforts to harm. This baiting idea was their best bet, but she hated it all the same. She can only imagine the wolves catching up and tearing the fleeing cats apart before turning on the rest. Moonwhisper exhales a shaky breath and then forces up a grin to look less stressed than she was.

The clan could not have been more tense than it was now, there was no telling if this plan would even work and if it failed the cats here would have no choice but to fall back if the rear guard could not redirect the wolves away. They'd already gotten a taste of blood in this place, they were sure to remember where it was and the bounty of food that lay before them. Moonwhisper gives a shudder before shaking her head and lifting it to address the kits kept close by the nursery, "...alright, let's go over it again. If you see a wolf you do not bolt away from us. Stay under our legs and move like little mice. Now show me your best sneaking."
The tortie point was not exactly motherly, hilarious given how soon the approach of her own kitting was brewing, but she at least had her sensibilities when it came to the smaller cats of the clan and how to speak to them. Her own kits would be easier to manage, she tells herself, but for now she was fine speaking plainly and with a light coo to her tone as if to soften her usually rough edges for their sake.

. ° ✦ His father is out there right now. Batwing is at the front of a patrol, leading wolves from their home and he can't help but stare at the camp's entrance and expect him not to return. He thinks of Freckleflame, Sparkwing, Mousenose. Pigeonpaw, Emberpaw, and Sunshinepaw. Six of his Clanmates lost their father to the wolves. Would his be any different?

Wide ears swivel toward the nursery as he heard Moonwhisper inside and his paws start moving toward it, knowing his mothers inside. He found @leopardtongue first and promptly sat beside her to cuddle into matching thick fur. He may be too big for this nursery now, finally having reached his sixth moon but there would never be a day he could outgrow the comfort he found in his mothers scent.

"I'm staying in here too. In case the wolves come back, I can carry a kitten." Truly it's because he would rather be torn from Leopardtongue's side by canine jaws than by choice but that part he keeps to himself.

  • BRAVEPAW — HE/HIM ・ 5 MOONS ・ THUNDERCLAN & APPRENTICE ・ PENNED BY beatae!
A Longhaired chocolate tabby/blue tabby chimera with deep blue eyes. Very thick coat that has started to grow into long, wispy curls. Developing into an awkward stage of kitten uglies as the rest of his body grows and changes.

freckleflame had never been particularly quick. wolfwind was, but she never quite picked up the habit in her wake ; she had sunfreckles bulk, rabbitnose’s long legs, built broad as she was tall and that never had given its way for speed. aside from the mongrels in her early apprenticeship, she’d not needed to worry about that. she was heavy enough to handle herself against most things, prepared to handle it as it came ; moreso than what remains of her family, and still not quite enough.

she hadn’t moved from her post at the bramble tunnel, standing lock - limbed and staring towards a star - studded sky, towards where the limbs cross just past their ravine walls. she listens close for signs of life — a long bay sounds in the distance and knowing the beast was pushing on from her father’s body unsheathes her claws, sinks them into the dirt underpaw to anchor herself still. ” do you think.. “ her voice sticks, cracks with the effort of speaking. she hadn’t, not since her father’s vigil, throat forever tight and wound like gripping claws, just tight enough to quicken her breath, ” they'll be okay? was this really th’ best option? “ did they have any other choice? yet, if anything went wrong, the pack would have a bountiful meal to rip apart over windclan’s border. if they caught them, they’d end up just like her father. or worse.

her belly turns, thinking of rabbitnose and peering back, harder into the bramble, as if it could will them all back quicker. kits play nearby, and she forces herself to him along with bravepaw. her fathers apprentice, curled into his mothers plush fur and vowing to carry a kit should something happen. still, all she thinks is batwing is out there, too. what was the likelihood that he would meet her same fate? a thick ginger tail comes to wrap tight around her paws, tucking close into herself as if it would comfort her still.

WE HAVE YET TO CRASH ✧°.☀ —————————————————————————————
Lightstrike was hardly a step from the nursery, his fur prickled and unkempt and he was uncomfortable and worried and he hated it. So much had happened. So much had happened. She was fine, though. She was fine.

For the umpteenth time he pushed his way inside despite the cramped room. Moonwhisper was speaking to the kits, going over protocol, and he let her, for once unusually quiet. The tom chose to settle himself nearby, not quite touching save for the way his tail draped over hers as he faced the entrance and stared out into the clearing.

Leopardtongue didn't want to think about which cats were out in the territory now, running to the WindClan border then the gorge soon after, yet it was all she could think about. She was tempted, over and over again to move outside of the nursery to near the entrance of camp, to see which cats would come back and which wouldn't - if any came back at all - but instead she'd stayed and eyes glance towards those within the gorse walls of the nursery ready to help the kits that were there now within it just in case something bad did happen. She had to trust her clanmates though to know best, had to trust that her mate knew best. They were the fastest of the clan, they'd be fine. It's what she had to keep telling herself as time ticked on.

Eyes glanced to Moonwhisper as she instructed the kittens once more and then glanced to Freckleflame before thinking at her words. "They have to be, since it felt like the only option." If this wasn't going to work would StarClan have sent Gentlestorm or Howlingstar a sign to let them know that if they were to make the wrong move here that all of ThunderClan would be dead, or would they remain silent, ready to watch the clans that they had helped to form shatter and die out due to the wolves.

As Bravepaw moved towards her the queen found herself pressing against her son's side, leaning down slightly to give him a quick lick between his head before she sat up straight once more. When he offered to carry a kit out she'd nod her head slightly - when had he started to become so responsible? Quickly she found her tail wrapping around Bravepaw as much as it could, looking to the entrance to the nursery once more as she strained to hear the sound of pawsteps through the camp entrance. Despite the fact they had left so recently she couldn't help but hope the wolves just ran off on their own and their clanmates would come home victorious anyway.

⁺˚⋆。°✩₊ The air within the camp was nearly suffocating. Most of their clanmates were out, potentially facing their deaths...and those that had remained in the camp were like sitting ducks. Her heart had felt as though it had been ripped out as she watched her son leave with the following patrol. She had just gotten him back...and back out he had went. It was selfish of her to want to beg for him to stay, not to go...but he was a warrior. Her little kit was grown up now, and it was his duty to serve his clan...but it didn't make it hurt any less. He's on the second patrol...the safer one... she kept telling herself, but she wasn't naive to the dangers of either patrols.

The deputy was sitting just outside the nursery. She had shifted a little further to the side when Bravepaw padded into the nursery. He had claimed to be there to carry a kit if need be, but she doubted that was the sole reason. The molly wouldn't chase him out...if she were in Leopardtongue's place, she would have begged to have her kits by her side in a moment like this. Her gaze burned towards the camp's tunnel, waiting for any signs of anything. Inside the nursery she could hear Moonwhisper running the kits through their instructions if the camp were to be invaded again. Will we be lucky enough to make it out again? The question tugs on her tongue, but she doesn't dare speak it. The clan was traumatized enough...Instead, she took in a deep breath. It was killing her to be sitting here, waiting. She wanted to be on the front lines, helping lead the wolves away. She closed her eyes, but all she could see was the clanmates that had left falling to the wolves. Her paws shifted uncomfortably, and she reopened her eyes.

Her ears perked, trying to listen beyond the camp, but she didn't have enhanced hearing...nobody here did. They would just have to wait for someone to come back with news. Freckleflame's voice spoke up, and she turned to the grieving molly. Her voice cracked as she spoke, and Flamewhisker blinked in sympathy. She wished she could take the grief from her and put it on her own shoulders. Sunfreckle wouldn't want his kits to grieve..."It will work...We have to have faith." As she spoke, she wasn't sure if she had said that for certainty, or just to reassure herself. There was no room for error in their plan. If anything went wrong, it could mean death to all the clans.

Adjusting to a new reality had always been a struggle. Anxieties of impending motherhood now shifted to nightmares of large, snapping teeth, monstrous and monochromed paws smashing in the roof of the nursery.
As Roeflame watches Moonwhisper, her shoulder rested against the outer support of the nursery, her gaze is far away. The brassy queen is thinking of Burnstorm, of Flycatcher and Howlingstar, of all the brave warriors set out to rid their forest of the terror.
Mostly, she is basking in her icy fear of never being able to press her nose against her mates again, of being unable to bury her features into thick ebony fur- only being able to tell stories of her children’s father heroism.
Morbid, Roeflame knows, but her luck with keeping the most cherished of cats close to her had proven to be faulty since the day she was born. So, she cannot suppress the intrusive thoughts that only add fuel to her blazing anxiety.
When Freckleflame sparks a thought from nearby, Roeflame would let a ghostly gaze drift to her friend.
Was this really the best option? The only option? Silently, the thought echoes in the she-cats own mind.
Leopardtongue seems to think so, how could she not? Her own mate was out there- Flamewhiskers too, Roeflame realizes as the deputy claims they needed to have faith.
So, with a head slightly tilting upwards, Roeflame decides to follow her denmates advice.
Starclan, if you take him… I might never forgive you.
Half-lidded, she lets the sentiment slide from her mind, sending it in the direction of the sky above.

Antlerpaw is silent, where she sits near Flamewhisker.

She is not granted the comfort of a mother- not that the underlying jealousy she had of Bravepaw really mattered at this moment. Her sisters were nearby, her brother likely as well, but her eyes were focused far away. She wasn't looking at the entrance of camp, or the ravine walls they had scaled the days before. Perhaps Antlerpaw had been in shock since she had seen the wolves in camp. She could almost see blood still dripping where Freckleflame rested near it.

Her stomach churned, but her ears flattened, vision dropping to her paws. "I hope it's over after this. I really do." Antlerpaw whispered, shifting. Would she allow herself to touch the deputy? Probably not. But she exuberated warmth and safety. Antlerpaw couldn't help it, vision shifting to sight her sisters. It was akin to a balm on her nerves, seeing them whole. A soft noise left her.
