camp PHANTA ☠︎︎ SCAVENGER HUNT

⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆ it was still early in thunderclan, the dawn patrols have yet to return and camp wasn't yet buzzing with excitement. that'd change soon with any luck. her kits were nearly apprentices, one way she found to motivate them was through challenge. it was why she sought out newly nursing badgerstripe for help in setting something up for those still camp bound, waiting for their friends and family to return from early patrols.

the queens worked diligently after the idea had been formed. and with the help of the bones left over from a squirrel, their hunt had been prepared in full. the kits were forced to remain in the nursery during the expanse, brimming with excitement over something new. nightbird would hear of it if any got too excited and poked their whiskers out to peek. finally, with badgerstripe's aide, she gathers the kits and other unburdened thunderclanners into one spot. thrashkit and honeykit had seemed especially interested in the happenings, she sends them a curious glance to try and decipher if they saw anything weren't supposed to.

"the bones of a squirrel have been parted, hidden within these walls for you all to find," nightbird explains, a serious gaze raking across all who had joined despite the rather light situation she presented. "you will have until sunhigh to find them and put them back in their correct shape. work together with your clanmates, and take it seriously-" she pauses, lingering on some of her more easy children. if they managed to lose a second hunt in a row, she'd be working them on their tracking until the minute before they became 'paws'. "-these skills will be necessary heading into leafbare. hunt well."

the lead warrior opens the floor to badgerstripe, waiting to see if she had any words of encouragement or other parting sentiments before thunderclan's camp turned into chaos. if not, she sets them off with a flick of her tail. the ones here were lucky, they'd get a head start before any of the warriors and apprentices on patrol returned. she'd suggest they use that time wisely if they hadn't already jetted off to find the hidden bones.
  • ooc ↛ no need to wait, tags for @badgerstripe, @THRASHKIT, & @Honeykit. this is a thread for the fall prompt event under the 'scavenger hunt' group. the skeleton of a squirrel has been dismantled and nightbird and badgerstripe have hidden the bones around camp. it is up to the participating thunderclanners to come together and find the missing pieces to rebuild the skeleton (and maybe even win an art prize >;D)! there will be 7 bones total, your character's success will be determined by the following:
    ROLLING
1-5 - failure to find anything, try again next post!
6-8 - your character manages to find... something. but it isn't quite what anyone will need to complete the puzzle. better luck next post!
9-15 - CONGRATS! you've found a bone! feel free to refer to the list below and decide which one.

    LOCATIONS
LEG 1 ( FOUND BY @TIGERKIT ) - tucked safely away in the protective bramble's of the nursery's outside walls, spotting this piece of leg bone is like finding a needle in a haystack! with only a small sliver of white showing amongst a sea of thorny vines, it'll take a careful eye to spot, and an even more careful approach to pull free.
LEG 2 ( FOUND BY @leafhusk ) - a tall branch remaining attached the fallen tree used to make up the elder's den have become a sort of pedestal for this leg bone. despite its relative ease to spot, it'll take some more effort getting it down. maybe you don't mind taking a leap of faith, or maybe it'd just be easier to find an adept climber to help.
LEG 3 ( FOUND BY @SQUIRRELPAW ) - the tree stump marking the entrance to the apprentice's den hides another leg tucked under a raised root. small paws will be vital in removing this bone from its resting place... maybe you could try finding a kit to see if they'd be willing to help- if only they weren't such fickle creatures. bribery is optional, but encouraged for success.
LEG 4 ( UNDISCOVERED ) - the last leg is somewhere in the warrior's den. you have a feeling it may be hidden in the moss of one of the empty nests. only, there are a lot of them considering most of the clan is hard at work. despite this bone being perfectly in reach for a younger member of thunderclan, it'll take a keen eye to find. unless... maybe someone saw something? after all, nightbird's excuse for being in there to visit her mate, raccoonstripe, was a pretty lame one considering he was out on patrol at the time.
RIBCAGE ( FOUND BY @HOPEPAW ) - the boulder making up the medicine cat's den are good at shielding thunderclan's ill and injured. it's even better at collecting mounds of fallen leaves near the rounded out bottoms. they've obviously been shifted by something other than the wind, there's a good chance the missing ribcage is the reason. unfortunately for you, there are a lot of leaves for one cat to sift through before it is found. careful not to squish the brittle bones with hasty movement, you wouldn't want to be the one responsible for ruining the whole hunt, would you?
TAIL BONES ( FOUND BY @Honeykit ) - the leader's den is a place few dare to venture to uninvited. it'll take a brave cat to make the journey. luckily, this bravery is to be rewarded with a small pile of tail bones wrapped up nicely in a leaf. the bundle is just outside, almost blending in with the lichen curtain. tread lightly, you wouldn't want to spook flamestar with your surprise visit!
SKULL ( FOUND BY @bayingkit ) - the final piece is buried beneath highrock the only hints being the suspiciously disturbed dirt and the 'x' laid out by two crossed twigs. surely, nightbird and badgerstripe wouldn't be so blatant about their hiding spot? upon further examination, you see multiple mounds of dirt topped with crossed twigs. there's only one skull to be found, which means most are a facade. better get to digging!

    RULES
limited to one roll per post, regardless of success. limited to one found bone per character. while not necessarily a rule, it is encouraged to use plotting channels in the discord to fulfill prompts associated with each bone. reach out to someone you may think could help, or pop into plotting to see if anyone is available! everyone is able to participate with a small note that this is staring while dawn patrols are still out. characters are free to join after patrol. HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!

IF ALL BONES ARE FOUND, every participating cat will have the chance to win an art prize from me at the mercy of the fated Wheel Spin. your character must be censused in order to win, so make sure you double check your status here! as an extra incentive, the 7 characters who roll a success will be allotted double entry onto the wheel. 1-3 winners will be rolled, depending on my availability when the thread wraps as well as interest.

Thrashkit liked Nightbird, he considers her stoic and rather straight forward. Trust doesn't come easy to him but given the amount of time he's had to spend within her proximity she comes close to achieving it. Badgerstripe was still one that it's wary of, squinting from afar the mere affiliation with her put his somewhat trust in Nightbird into question. He's not sure what scheming is supposed to look like but he thinks that their actions are close enough to it. The fact that they weren't allowed to peek their head from the nursery to see the true extent of what the pair was doing put it on edge. It shuffles and paces, waiting until there's a sign that she's allowed to finally see the results of whatever this was.

It's clear that he's interested and antsy, standing next to Honeykit as Nightbird explains what they're to do. He listens well to her explanation, gaze shifting from her to Badgerstripe then around then in hopes to figure out what was going on before it's completely explained to them. Squirrel bones? How does someone hunt for bones? Are there meant to be trails? Obvious mounds? There's a possibility that they're not all buried or buried at all for that matter, the queen had explained that they're hidden rather than buried.

There should be confidence in it's capabilities, having been in the forest when the other kits haven't- or rather when most of the other kits haven't. That hadn't prepared him to look for bones at all, especially when they weren't to leave the fox's burrow. It's a little frustrating that he doesn't have some kind of advantage, grinding teeth together she turns to @Honeykit "let's... work together?" he suggests, quiet and not completely sure himself. Wherever his denmate agrees or not he attempts to find the hidden bones.

Thrashkit isn't very adventurous, nor is he imaginative so it takes this idea as literally as it can. Eyes aim solely at the ground in an attempt to spot any mishapen dirt because his first instinct is to bury. It leads to nothing in the end, finding one dead end after another. With a frustrated flick of his tail he glances around at the rest of his clanmates to see if they have had any better luck, he supposes he's supposed to be encouraging but there's a bitter hope that everyone is struggling as much as she is.

not having been assigned to any of the dawn patrols with his mentor, spiderpaw was one of many who had been rounded up by the smoke molly to partake in the activity set up by the queens which is aimed mostly towards the eager kits who could barely contain their excitement but it's extended just as much to the rest who were participating. nightbird takes a moment to explain the scavenger hunt to them, revealing that there are squirrel bones that lay hidden around camp waiting to be found before sunhigh. their sunlit gaze flickers over to badgerstripe who's given the stage to speak and when all is said and done, they are set free to begin the hunt for a dismantled rodent skeleton.

spiderpaw shuffles their paws slightly, watching participants begin to spread out before they approach someone with a nervous smile. "wan–wanna partner u–up, we c–can look over here to st–start?" if whoever it was they approached agreed, the apprentice would appear a bit more relaxed as they tend to always hold themselves in a tense manner. he decides on a spot upon the outskirts of the clearing where piles of fallen leaves lay scattered, surely there was one here? spiderpaw carefully paws through the small heaps only for them to come up empty. "da–darn it..."

〕Another scavenger hunt, once more organized by Nightbird. . . did she like doing these? Entertainment while she was stuck in the nursery? And dragging all the kits along with her. . . Though the premise this time was far more interesting than finding prey, instead they would seek squirrel bones. Ok, okay, sure! They listen to the instructions more attentively, now, leaning their head forwards to show interest. They might need some help, unfortunately — admitting that was hard enough, their ego deflating by the minute.

Before they can approach someone, Thrashkit is the one who comes to them. Honeykit had never really talked to him or his siblings; two moons ago they'd have been inclined to deny and laugh in his face at the request, but now the golden-furred tabby just nods. Beats working with Bayingkit or any of her littermates, they supposed.

The kit gets to work, mimicking the behavior they'd seen apprentices do: sticking their noses up to find a scent trail. But would the bones even smell at all? Would they have a lingering scent of squirrel? What did a squirrel smell like?. Thinking so much about it leads to inaction on their part, and bones remain unlocated by Honeykit.

-ˋˏ ༻❁༺ ˎˊ- he is trying to focus, really. it's doesn't work very well. his mind is all over the place so he just kind of ping-pongs back and forth between actually listening and doing what the instructions are. he should have listened more but he can hardly keep still. he sniffs around the warriors den, and tries to find... what was he looking for again? he can't remember because he wasn't listening to begin with. his tail tucked under his belly as he sniffed, searching around and finding a... feather. his brows furrow as he picks it up. it's not what's being looked for, but he's cool anyways. he thinks he will keep it.

for once, though, he's got nothing to say. he has to remember what they're actually looking for out here so he can try again. he wants to be good at this game, but he can't if he doesn't know what he's looking for, right? he shouldn't have been so distracted but his brain keeps going and going. there is no off switch, and certainly no way to slow it down. not really.

⊱⊰ The premise of the scavenger hunt seems simple enough: Badgerstripe and Nightbird have hidden some squirrel bones around the camp, and they've challenged everyone to hunt down a skeleton that's been separated and hidden throughout the camp. Nightbird delivers the premise of the competition with a seriousness that seems so odd against the admittedly inconsequential activity. Still, it's training, in a way, which is the only reason that the lilac-furred apprentice sweeps her way over to join in on the game.

Soon enough, the group disperses to start searching, and Hopepaw looks around to see what the others are doing. She moves to follow after Orangepaw when the ginger tabby sets off toward the warriors' den, but stops herself after a couple heartbeats. She's supposed to be searching for the bones on her own, not relying on others to help her find them. It's okay for the kits to help each other, since they're way younger, but Hopepaw is an apprentice—she should be able to find one measly bone all by herself. It's a silly competition, anyway, so if she can't even do this, how is she ever going to become a warrior? She turns and heads in a different direction, wandering, without much of a destination in mind. It isn't surprising that she ends up standing outside of Gentlestorm's den, copper eyes wide as she stares at the entrance.

The medicine den is a place of comfort for the girl, so she doesn't hesitate to breeze past the entrance. If her uncle is around, she'll quirk her mouth into a careful smile and flick her tail in his direction, and then she sets about shuffling through the den. There's a bunch of leaves piled up kind of weirdly, and the scent of ThunderClanner clings to them—the smell, along with the way the leaves look like they've been rifled through, piques Hopepaw's interest. Slowly, she steps closer to the leaf pile and starts to sift through it. Her movements are careless at first, pushing leaves around until her paw bumps into something hard.

"I found one," she says, brushing her forepaw against the length of a fragile bone. The leaves shift, crackling under the weight of her paw, and Hopepaw winces as she hears a muffled crack. Horror lights in her eyes—has she broken one of the bones? Nightbird would cuff her so hard for that—but when she pushes aside a bundle of the dry leaves, she spots a snapped twig underneath. She lets out a sigh of relief, then turns to look around the den for help. "Can you help me pull this out? I don't want to break it," she asks whichever cat happens to be closest to her.

her mother has begun without her. she is speaking in clipped, assertive tone that makes the aging creature lower her head and crane her ears like a skittering dog around the back of the growing kit - crowd. her shoulders hunch, tailtip flicking alongside dual-toned eyes instinctively in the direction of a reeking blonde pelt ( just like the big white one that talked to ghosts all the time ; sharp and sweet and dewish. her nose wrinkles. ) as nightbird relinquishes them to a game of scavenger hunt. a burn tickles her ribcage . . something jealous, something fitful. she turns maned head away and glowers towards her feet until honeykit comes along, because honeykit always came along and got her for games. if they wanted to be so bossy about it, they could come and get her.

. . but they do not. they do not, and in fact, they are taken alongside someone else. the smaller, weird - smelling kits ( different than hopepaw ; woodsy. bitter. like the damprot of fern root. her nose wrinkles again. she isn't sure it's for the same reason. ). her stomach dips to her paws and for a moment, she thinks of stomping off . . of growling and snarling. it doesn't feel right.

well . . fine. if honeykit didn't want to be her partner, that was just fine. she didn't even care. bayingkit could do just fine enough on her own. better, even . . she wouldn't have their nagging voice biting at her ears while she did all the work. then again, come to think of it, she hadn't heard that nagging voice in a while anyway. a weird simmer of frustration wells in her belly as she whips her haunches off the ground and stalks, whip - tailed, over to where @ORANGEPAW. had been wandering in idle circles at the fringes of camp, " c . . ccome with me. " its gritted through clenched fang and flaring nostrils, but lowers her ears to show she was non - threatening. the ginger tomcat's similarities to her ended at the scruff of their fur, the sun - simmering disposition causing her to squint, crouch towards the ground preemptively.

she thinks of her pa, and the scent of still - warm freshkill . . how much stronger it was here, pressed to the dirt and foliage. it's easier to forget honeykit, and stupid hopepaw ( who had found something, something bayingkit squeezes her eyes and huffs to avoid hearing as she shuffles through a rummage of fallen leaves ). she doesn't think of the vibrant reds that had painted the ground beneath highrock only a moon prior, doesn't pretend she can still smell the copper her grandmother had stained into the ground until leaffall washed it back to dull brown . . her mind clears, and she is all Nose. her muzzle crinkles, " i can sniff somethin' 'round here. mismatched eyes light up. mitted paws pound excitedly at the ground and her haunches weave in a wagging half - dance — take that, honeykit, " dig. you gotta dig 'em up! " she barks gleefully, a half exclamation, a half order for orangepaw to help before she dives forward and does just that. paws batter the ground until finally, covered in soil and debris, she locks her teeth around a small eye socket and tugs . . falling gracelessly back onto her haunches with a gleaming squirrel skull grasped firmly in her muzzle. she holds it high like the prize it surely is.

mongrelish, standing all thistlethorn fur and bared teeth, bayingkit would be thought roguesblood if not for the dogtooth crown she uncomfortably bears. a hereditary haunting lies in the shag of ornate black striping and long limbs that do not yet suit her wide, slouching shoulders ; her fathers daughter, laced in dredge and filth moreso than he'd ever been. a constant, incessant need to make herself small forms in hunched spine and weary, whale - eyed suspicion, communicating mostly in rumbling growls.. bayingkit tends to hold herself with a tuck tailed and trembling livewire of feral volatility.

Reactions: ORANGEPAW.
〕Something stirs in their chest when they see Bayingkit off with Orangepaw. They had expected hissing and growling to be thrown their way when the tabby saw them with Thrashkit, but there was nothing; no snapping teeth, no tantrums and certainly not being forced into working with the she-kit. They may not have gotten anything done successfully in the prior game Nightbird had organized, but it was odd not to have the irritating presence beside them.

It hurts ( and annoys ) them even more when Bayingkit actually finds something, and one of the bones no less: the skull, carried like a trophy in a way that makes them nothing short of jealous. ". . .M - move," they are bossy as they finally speak to Thrashkit, practically pushing the dark-furred kit along with them towards the Highrock ( but just far away enough from Bayingkit, can't have her think they're deliberately following her - they are not, of course not. ). Golden pelt sniffs near the leader's den without much care for her privacy, only wanting to show everyone else they can find some dumb bones too. They are not lazy like their blood dictates.

"Look around here." Honeykit mutters, leaving Thrashkit behind as they investigate the other side of the entrance covered by lichen curtain - sniffing around the area, looking for anything that may seem out of place. There is no messed up ground from digging, or just bones lying around ( that would beat the purpose of tracking them down, they suppose ), but they do find something camouflaged within the lichen: a suspicious bundle of leaves, deliberately left there.

They grab at it without much grace, hearing the rattling of something inside that makes their heart thump loudly in their chest. Sharp teeth nibble at the package until it comes undone, revealing several tail bones within. I am not worthless. A bitter thought followed by See, Bayingkit, I work better without you snapping at my side. That reflection doesn't make them satisfied in the slightest, and Honeykit turns to Thrashkit with a frown etched on their face. "Found. . . bones!"

Reactions: TIGERPAW
They were gonna be playing a game... Tigerkit knew, cause they were making her and her denmates all stay in the nursery again, and nothing bad was even happening this time, she's pretty sure... Tigerkit doesn't like games. She was different from other kids that way, and also, she could barely ever do anything cause the other kits were so loud and growly and rowdy... As she toddles out of the nursery, her ears are already flattened to her skull, expecting disappointment... She's gotta find squirrel bones, and there were like, a hundred cats here. There's no way she's gonna find anything... There's no way anyone would wanna help her either...

Tigerkit hunches her shoulders and sighs. She should just go back inside, but that'd be weird, to walk out of the nursery just to go right back inside again... She looks to the nursery wistfully, as if being kept from it by some unseen force... The force is unseen, but not mysterious. She doesn't wanna be a weirdo. That's the force.

She stares at the nursery walls for a long while. Too long of a while, and now she has to wonder if it'd be weirder to leave, or keep standing here at this point... Maybe if someone asked her, she could say she was trying to count all the brambles in the bramble wall and... Is there something in there?

With a scrunch of her nose, Tigerkit pads closer to the nursery, not with the intent to leave, but to investigate. She thinks she can just barely see a sliver of something white and bone-like... Did she really find one...? It looks like it'd hurt to get. It'd hurt real bad... but she needs it. she needs it real bad. With an expression deep in concentration, she reaches...

-And gets poked by a bramble, " Ow! " she squeaks. She really needs it though, really really needs it. And she can't say she found it until she has it, what if someone takes it from her? She maneuvers her paw to try and get the bone out. Thorns poke her— but she got it. She got it and that's what matters. " I got- I got one! I f-found one! " maybe a little too excitedly, she announces. She would've liked to been the first, but that's okay, she guesses...

OOC: Rolled a 14! She found Leg 1 by the Nursery :)

-ˋˏ ༻❁༺ ˎˊ- orangepaw is confused when the kit comes up to him of all cats. he only nods his head when he follows her. she's good at this. something in his chest tells him he never will be but he only pushes it aside, nodding his head when she tells him to dig. dig, she says, and dig he will. easy enough. he's got rather big paws so to dig is very easy. he doesn't want the credit for the find– he doesn't even want to find anything more than what he did already. he's more than willing to just help. so, he moves his paws and helps to clear the dirt and his ears twitch when she decides his help isn't good enough and simply does it herself. okay. that's fine.

he almost says congratulations, but his voice won't come out. it's weird. he always has something to say and right now, he's not a thing. so he only offers his big signature smile and a wave of his tail, and a gesture towards nightbird. good job, bayingkit. you'll be an amazing tracker someday, won't you? that's all he can hope for. she's bossy, and a little rude, but she's trying her best. he likes the kitten. she's funny. she's a friend, even if she decides to beg to differ.

leafhusk won't say no to a freebie training session for her apprentices, orangepaw looks like he's having fun. she looks around non-nonchalantly in the beginning, feeling a bit awkward that she's the only warrior indulging so far. a rock is lifted upwards, she pokes around the edges of the dens, brushes up any suspicious pawfuls of dirt. it's not until she loiters outside the elder's den, that something spots her gaze. the tiny bone rests delicately atop the fallen branch, barley out of reach, just enough to notice it.

there's no way she can reach that, climbing is not her favorable skill. the molly looks over her shoulder, looking across the clearing. most of those younger than her are already occupied with finding their own piece of the bone, and that's fine, she would be worried asking a young apprentice or kit to climb a den like that. golden eyes finally land on the familiar addersnap, always twiddling this paws for something to do.

"addersnap!" she calls in a stage-whisper, beckoning with her tail.

"i found one of the bones in that branch—" she gestures, "you know i can't reach that, could you grab it for me?" there's a playful glint in her eye as she asks her former apprentice for help.

--- rolled a 14! she found leg 2 & is asking @ADDERSNAP for help

Squirrelpaw might not care much for leaf-fall, but boy did she love games. The announcement of a scavenger hunt quickly pulled the apprentice's attention, bringing her bounding over to join the mismatched group of Thunderclanners who were already participating. She grinned eagerly as @SPIDERPAW turned to her, asking if she wanted to pair up. "Of course, we'll be the best team here!" She exclaimed rather cockily, following the dark tomcat as he inspected a nearby leaf pile. She had a good feeling about this spot, yes! Believe it or not, the blue torbie could be… a little competitive. Losing certainly wasn't ever on her agenda, and today would be no different.

Alas, it didn't seem like her new partner shared her same thirst for winning. Her tail lashed irritatedly as Spiderpaw's search turned up nothing, and her denmate came away looking rather dejected. She bit her lip with a frown, her first instinct to curse the stars for their bad luck. Everywhere around them, their clanmates were beginning to find all the pieces. But the game wasn't over yet! Instead of pouting, she shot her counterpart a determined smirk. "It's okay, there's still some pieces left! Follow me this time." She had no real reason to believe her luck would be better, but something was calling to her about the apprentice den…

Motioning for Spiderpaw to follow, Squirrelpaw dashed over to the mouth of their den, practically skidding to a halt in front of it. She was just about to step inside when something told her to stop. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a stump. The thing had probably been there longer than she had been alive, but for some reason it was the first time she had ever noticed it. And it did look like a rather good hiding place… "Here! Help me look over here," she directed excitedly, not waiting for Spiderpaw to start nosing around in the dirt. And then, suddenly, a vague but teasingly familiar scent tickled her nose when she reached one particular root. The molly tried shoving her paws underneath to dig it up, but she was a bit too big to reach. "Spiderpaw, see if you can fit your paws in there!" He seemed to be a bit more slender than she was.

A scavenger hunt. The disgust was written plain on Addersnap's face as he observed the area around him, the early morning light catching on each individual pelt with a fiery gleam. What a waste of time. Kits should be preparing for their apprenticeship, not dilly-dallying with such mundane tasks. Rolling his golden eyes at such a sight, the warrior was about to go about his day when Leafhusk's voice reached his tufted ears. Pinning his gaze on his former mentor, he padded along next to her side and looked at her quizzically. She couldn't possibly be a part of "You know I can't reach that," she remarked with a youthful shimmer in her eye towards the boy. It was difficult to not crack a smile at her request. "Aight, sure, Leafhusk."

He faked a dumbfounded stare, lips pursed in concentration as he looked up att he leg bone above. "Mmm, I dunno, Lea'husk. 'His one's pre'ty tough…" A small chuckle left his throat as he latched his claws into the tree, swallowing back the little worry that had begun to bubble in his stomach. He wasn't the most talented climber, but Addersnap wanted to make Leafhusk proud. Hoisting himself up the fallen branch, he grasped the bone delicately between his jaw before jumping down in front of the fawn-colored she-cat with a stale expression. "One squirrel bone for ya." The tabby mummbled after putting the bone by her paws, a smile cracking its way through its hard exterior. Looking around at the progress of others, he focused his attention back to the lead warrior. "Uh… wha' now?"
