κκ Since losing his eye, Sandpaw has been confined to the island camp. And now, with Moonbeam gone, he's the sole bearer of the responsibility of making sure his face fully heals. He can't risk getting it infected again without the clan's healer aroundβso the boy keeps his paws away from his face, shoving down the urge to scratch the itch that's formed beneath the cobwebs lining his missing eye. He can't risk leaving camp, even to hunt; fishing from the shore seems to be the only way he can contribute to RiverClan's hunting efforts right now.
One yellow eye strains to see clearly as silver and brown scales glitter beneath the water's surface, and the effects of his injury are fully clear to Sandpaw. Telling which fish is close enough to the surface to snatch is⦠difficult. It's something that he'd done with ease before, but now it seems like the only thing that's holding him back. He'd taken it for granted, he supposes. But just as he's about to give up, he spots something. A flash of fins, and⦠there! A slow-moving fish, probably injured, breaking the water's surface. A pale paw strikes out, and the fish is caught with a flourish of claws.
He drops the fish to the ground before him, preparing to administer the bite that will end its life quickly, but a glint of something silvery catches his eye. It's unnatural, strange. He bends down to get a closer look, only to find a shiny, barbed hook protruding from the fish's belly. It looks like a claw, and the pieces fit together in the apprentice's head. This strange twoleg claw must have been the reason for the fish's slowness. It'sβ¦ tainted. "Ugh," he groans, tipping his head back to stare at the sky in frustration. He feels the start of tears prickling at the back of his eyeβit's his first catch since the fox attack, and it's ruined. Why can't anything just go his way? "Why can't they just leave us alone?"
