There is just one thing I need [ material gathering ]

〕A sharp, piercing wind ruffles her fur as she leads the patrol farther from the camp. Their dens were not ready for leafbare yet, it wasn't supposed to be this cold already. If this wasn't just a freak incident, then they were running out of precious time. Their nursery was way too full for leafbare, and with kittens that hadn't even been born yet. They needed to prepare all of the dens for the cold, but right now the nursery was the top priority. "Spread out, we have to find as much as we can." Though she wouldn't speak it, with each frostbitten, shriveled patch of moss they passed, the more worried she became.

It had been a little while since she had split from the others, and so far she had come up with nothing. A cloud formed from her muzzle as she let out a long sigh, and began to turn back to where she had last seen everyone. Hopefully they had more luck than she had. There was nothing out here...what bedding materials she could find were wither ruined by frost, or apparently blown away by the wind. Her tail flicked irritatedly as she reunited with everyone, shame eating away at her belly that she had returned empty pawed. "Did you have any luck?"

a longhaired red tabby with low white and green eyes. flamewhisker's fur is a vibrant hue of red, riddled with thick classic tabby markings. her fur is medium in length, and she has a large, feathery tail. her chest, belly, tail tip, and her paws are dipped white. flamewhisker's eyes are a dark, deep shade of green. her shoulder has a large scar on it from a fight with a dog. she also has a shredded ear from a disagreement with a loner during her time alone before joining thunderclan. on particularly cold days, or sometimes before a major weather change, she will walk with a slight limp from her shoulder injury.

The early frost bode poorly for the Clans, and Softsight worried for her own Clan most of all - after all, they had many a kit to be had in the nursery, not to mention the other mouths to feed. If the early frost was indicative of something colder over the horizon, Softsight knew that it was better that the Clan get out on a head start as much as they could to provide ThunderClan with what it would need over the coming moons.

She'd gone out with Flamestar as soon as the leader had called those remaining from other patrols to her side in the hopes of finding some nesting materials for the nursery - but just as Flamestar's luck was, Softsight's was poor, and she grimaced as the patrol passed frostbitten-moss after one another, with seemingly nothing left for the cats to take back to camp.

"Was there really no way to have foreseen this?" Softsight mumbled to herself as she returned to Flamestar's side, another failed attempt at getting some moss foiled by the frost.

There hadn't really been a thought to where the materials for all the nests had come from, in Thrashpaw's mind they were always there instead of being a finite resource. He wanders beside @antlerbreeze without saying much, he is never one for words. She also didn't really understand why it was so important to find more of these resources, it's time in the nursery has been nothing but warm. A little annoyingly so if he was honest, it was easy to be found as annoying by Thrashpaw. The forest is still scary right now to him in this state, a mockery of the first home he had loved (still feared but to a lesser extent).

Thankfully the apprentice spent a lot of time around moss, he would be willing to assume the ratio of time spent with moss and cats was heavily skewed towards the former. Anything much better for insulation flies above his midnight head as they hesitantly break from practically latching onto their mentors side in favour of the bundle growing beside a tree stump. It's wet, as most of the things around here are in the melting frost but it doesn't make the feeling anymore pleasant.

"...moss" he mews timidly towards his half-sibling, quick to return to her side in fear of something from the depths of the forest leaping out to grab him. "now what?" This all seemed kind of pointless, as he noted Flamestar and Softsight who hadn't returned with anything. Was he... not supposed to find something? Oh no, he's failed at trying to fit in with the patrol then.. maybe he should get rid of it?

⋆。˚ ☁︎ ˚。⋆。˚☀︎˚。⋆ Finchpaw couldn't say that the Leafbare's premature chill was something he welcomed with open arms and a smile warm enough to cause it's melt. He didn't hate it by any means, for like every other rotating season it was a fact of life, something that could not be changed by the means of wishing that it wouldn't be so next year. In rotation, again and again, lush greenery would eventually wither into barren wasteland covered by an endlessly stretched pearlescent sheet. He could feel the promise of it's coming against his fur now, frigid frost gnawing with steely resolve against his flesh, easily cutting through a short furred pelt. It made him shiver, and his normally bright, pale sky optics had narrowed to watery slits as they observed the billowed breaths that escaped him with every exhale as he trekked endlessly onwards into the forest in search of anything that could be even remotely useful for the ever worsening winter.

He figured he was lucky, his paws taking him in the direction of discarded, half-concealed materials. Although battered and broken in some places, it would have to do for now- a little bit went a long way in times like these, and the clans would need to count their blessings where they could no matter how miniscule and meaningless they appeared to be. He would collect his stash with haste before bounding back towards the direction of his clanmates. He was eager to return home, his pads stinging to the point they felt almost entirely numb against the frozen ground.

"It's not much, but it'll have to do for the time being...We'll have to hold onto hope we fare better on our next outing." He commented with noticeable disappointment laden in his tone as he presented what scraps he found to his leader, who had shown up with...well, nothing at all. "Gosh, it's freezing...!" Finchpaw mumbled through chattering teeth and a nose newly glistening. A wishful part of him hoped to get back to the comfort of his nest, but the more logical part of him knew there would be nothing but more labor awaiting him back in camp.

The tom's tail twitched where it dragged on the ground behind him, as he followed behind the others with flattened ears. He couldn't say that he has...enjoyed. The apprentice hadn't disliked it per se, but he didn't welcome Leafbare with open arms and a big smile on his face. He knew the rotation of seasons, from what Mother had told him when he was a small creature. It was life... that the one lush and flourishing greenery eventually all withered and rotted down into a barren cold wasteland.

Billowed breaths escaped his maw with every exhale he took, as he went onwards into the forest in his search of... anything useful for the upcoming winter really. He perks up when he spots some half - concealed materials, blinking slowly he notices feathers scattered about. He approaches the materials, and although some of the feathers are ruffled up, they won't harm anyone. He glances in the corner of his eye to spot some ferns near, he lets his tail twitch as he bends his head down to gather up the feathers. He quickly walks over to the clumps of fern with narrowed eyes, tilting his head this way and that before promptly gathering some in his already cluttered maw. Feeling the chill seep into his pawpads, as he walks towards the group with a twitch of a feathered ear. "F-found these.." He mumbles through the materials stuffed in his maw, as he presented the feathers and ferns.

She is step-in-step with her apprentice. Perhaps, she is attempting to shield Thrashpaw from the worst of the winds, but failing. Antlerbreeze wasn't all that much bigger herself, and how ironic that her name was acting against them. Though, it was more of a gust of wind then a breeze- she misses greenleaf, even if it meant she was panting-hot, she wasn't at least trying to curl into herself for warmth.

Eyes shifted as Thrashpaw took initiative, and she watched quietly- ears perked quietly in what she could only imagine was pride, and she nodded in encouragement. "Well done, Thrashpaw." She says quietly, and approaches the stump alongside the apprentice while he gathers some. Head shifts and turns, nose twitching before she rounds the stump. Paws dig into a hollow, pulling free a mass of down feathers. Eyes widen briefly at the rare find, and she does her best to collect them neatly.

Antlerbreeze leads Thrashpaw back to the gathering of camp. She is careful to set the down feathers down before herself, ensuring that none flew off in the heavy, cold winds. "We take it back to camp, Thrashpaw. Try to dry it out some, before making nests with them." She says in a warm tone- vision lifted towards her leader and Softsight. "I found some down feathers, and Thrashpaw found some moss." She reported, voice lifted to carry over the wind.

before slipping away from the patrol, leafhusk glanced at their leader. the concern is subtle, but difficult to ignore once it’s noticed. however, there’s no time to dwell on the anxieties lingering into the council. leafhusk pokes around frost-crusted bushes and chilly undergrowth until she finds nothing. she huffs out a frustrated puff of cold air, turning back to the patrol.

"nothing here. stars, did the prey take all of the nesting material, too?" the molly had only been out of commission for barley a moon... she shouldn't be this out of practice. tracking was her strong suit. she’s grateful to see that they won’t go back empty pawed, though; but she knows this won’t be their last supply run. hopefully the hunting patrols are having better luck.

The chilliness in the air has Roaringsun fluffing out his fur to make himself warm, thankful for his long fur during this time of need. Frost had arrived early somehow, and they hadn't had the time to fully prepare their dens before the harshest days arrived — which would be sooner than expected, apparently. Roaringsun had never experienced Leaf-bare, his former twolegs had never let him go outside during the season. . . and so far, he couldn't say he was enjoying it.

He strays a bit far from the patrol, seeking materials further into the woods. He hears calls of cats finding moss, and feathers, letting out a billowed breath of relief. The warrior sniffs the air, the stale scent of rabbit hanging nearby. Roaringsun investigates the area and finds a clump of rabbit fur on the ground, probably left behind as it was chased by some predator. He hums, collecting his find and trotting back to the patrol with a grin. Found some rabbit fur! The flame-sepia attemps to speak, though his voice is mostly muffled.

With each breath Addersnap could see the clouds that left his maw, how they quickened to reflect the haste in his pace as he padded alongside Sparkpaw in the patrol, pelt twitching in anticipation. Hopefully the young warrior could show off his supposedly "stellar" tracking skills he oh so praised himself for, being something that he got the hang of even in his unmotivated state. Flamestar, Leafhusk, and Antlerbreeze were on this patrol as well -- he had to do his best to impress them--

The tabby stopped in his tracks for a moment before quickly gaining consciousness back to move forward just in time to not catch up whoever may be behind him. Why would he want to impress Antlerbreeze? Addersnap scoffed to himself with an arrogant smirk pressed onto his face, convinced he must just be looking for any type of companionship at this point. That thought instead sent a twinge of guilt through his system, but he pushed it down in order to focus on the matters right in front of him. He couldn't be worrying about... well, whatever it was he was worrying about right now.

Flicking his tail-tip against Sparkpaw to signal pulling away from the group, they went a little ways away from the patrol to begin their search. Giving his attention to the fire-colored apprentice, Addersnap smacked his lips together as he thought about what he could train the boy on. "'N order t' pick up a scent, openin' up ya muh- mouth t' taste 'he air 's usually 'he best way t' go about it. Oth'a-wise, listenin' by ear w-works lik'a dream." He paused, hesitating before continuing on with his lesson. "Bu' we 'ren't lookin' for 'nythin' live right now. 'At's okay, though, because we can sm- smell 'round for 'ny typ'a fur, down, or dry moss. Anythin' that'll keep us warm." Lifting his chin to nod at the bundle of bushes to their right, Addersnap flicked his tail towards it to direct the apprentice to try and find any bedding in that direction, while he opted for the brush under a fallen tree. However, it seemed as though the place had already been ransacked, only tufts of fur to remain from the ordeal. Meeting back at where they had parted, the chocolate feline shrugged his shoulders to his apprentice. "Nothin'. How 'bout you? 'Ny questions?"

⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊ It was as though she was chasing a ghost; faint scents covered by frost made finding material purely an eyesight affair. There were probably plenty of other creatures that were also on the hunt for materials to line their nests with.

The icy wind clawed harshly at her long fur, and she turned away to shield her vulnerable face from its sting, flattening her ears and tucking her tail. Dwindlingpaw pitied her short-furred clanmates and kits with bodies too small to stand the cold. She gritted her teeth and doubled her efforts to find anything to help.

Moss wasn't the best thing to keep the cold from creeping in at night, but it's better than nothing. The red and cream apprentice looked between tree roots and rocks before setting her sights higher, circling different trees till she found what she was looking for in gripping onto the sides of the bark. Parts of the moss have already shifted color from a pretty green to an odd shade of brown, but Dwindlingpaw didn't care.

She sprung up onto the tree, digging her claws into its bark before climbing up to reach the moss. "Haha, you're coming home with me!" Unhooking one of her clawed paws from the tree, she began to scratch at the moss, sending it fluttering down to the ground below. Once she was back on the ground, she made sure to grab up each little fluffy piece.

Was it too early to assume Finchpaw as an extension of herself? Probably, yet he was now part of her social circle as their apprentice. His mistakes were theirs (begrudgingly) and the pride she feels whenever he succeeds is immeasurable. Such is the case today, material gathering is a rather low energy task. A necessary task given the rude awakening to the dropping temperatures and frost covered ground, leaving a damp feeling underpaw as it melted when she walked. The wind is irritating, as is a lot of climates that aren't the delight of partially cloudy with a warm sunbeam. Long tendrils of fur whip against her muzzle as the gusts of wind carried it from where it rested neatly against her skull.

With a flick of her long draping tail she nods approvingly at Finchpaw as he ventures off to find half hidden materials. They trust him to not lunge head first into danger but she lingers behind him regardless, a nagging worry for the young tom. Misty clouds billow out from her nose as she huffs, trying to find something of her own. She dips her head low, looking under shrubbery and nestled against the tree roots. Places she's sure no one else has checked yet, as everyone spreads out under Flamestar's order.

As she ducked her head against the roots of another oak tree she spots a clump of feathers stuck in the twigs of a bush. Her eyes light up as she trots towards it, delicately plucking them from where they resided. Following after her apprentice as he shows the bedding he found. "It's better than finding nothing at all Finchpaw, have pride in the fact you have helped make someone's nest a little cozier" they comment with an approving smile. There's a mild flicker of irritation, why he wasn't happy finding anything at all was confusing to her but she has to remember that a lot of cats strive for higher than the bare minimum.
